2009: It's Over

Ballgame over, series over, season over.

With a third straight opportunity to play spoiler, the Royals lost a third straight game to the Twins. Here are some of the pitchers who appeared in this game: Carl Pavano, Luke Hochevar, Anthony Lerwe, Dusty Hughes, Y. Yabuta, Bobby Keppel, Ron Mahay, Brian Duensing.

A hearty congrats to the Twins for getting to 86 wins and forcing the lamest one-game playoff ever. The Twins went 10-22 against the AL East and 19-21 against the AL West.

As for the Royals, it's all over.

Thanks to a "hot" September, the Royals only lost 97 games in 2009. The Royals went 48-81 in games not started by Zack Greinke. Trust the process.

wonder how it compares to 2001

granted, we had offense in 2001, and a GM who was slightly competent

Depressing, but well said.

hm

and there’s no Robert Ford on the post game… having an all-Greg Schaum post game is… unique and I think Greg is gonna close it out by 5pm

aside from being from Nooyawk too?

kidding kidding.. Rob is good even if he had his pro-Jacobs moments. Although the 2hr+ postgame he did by himself after a bad quick loss was… something

Obviously, 610 needs to give me the postgame job.

If this team is still this bad next year (IE, if drastic changes are not made), I am going to make an effort to call into every postgame show just for laughs.

Also, Felix Hernandez has gone 6IP 2H 0ER 0BB 6K against the Rangers so far today

SO i can’t wait to see zack get the Cy stolen from him because Felix managed to scrape together 19 wins

Least fun season that I can remember.

There had to be maybe 25 games that I enjoyed.

I only went to 4 games this season, the fewest in a looooong time.

Yes, it is possible to lose and have fun.

Not nearly as much fun as winning – but you
can lose in a way that is respectable. I have
lost all respect for the team this year, except
for some starting pitchers and Butler.

hochevar easy

he had some bright spots this season but hasn’t even resembled a major league pitcher lately

i am beginning to think it’s just all in his head, sometimes it really looks like it on the mound.

To be fair

I think Zack would probably just think that’s annoying.

Even if we fans would have liked it.

by Gross(est) on Oct 4, 2009 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Felix has given up 15 unearned runs this year

Zack has nine. So the actual runs allowed difference is even bigger between the two. And that’s even though the Royals defense is a million times worse than the Mariners. Not that I expect sportswriters to notice these things.

Why no offseason moves yet?

I mean they need to GET FREAKING BUSY making moves. At least release Guillen Bloomquist, Buck, Gordon, Teahen, Hernandez, Farnsworth, Wright, Colon, Mahay, Yabuta, Davies, Chen….Seriously, just release all of these guys. I bet 2/3’s of them would never play again in organized baseball. If nothing else they would make a great nucleus for the 2010 T bones.

He and Jacobs are 1 and 2 on my list of people DM might realistically get rid of, since we all know he is not letting of Hoagy and his 12 million.

Yup

that was Boras reminding everybody that he doesn’t have to play by Bud’s Silly Rules.

Dayton pretty much does, except when the rules are just guidelines — such as the slot numbers for draftees’ bonuses.

Thank god...

it is over… this season has been like picking a scab over and over. It hurts and then bleeds and then scabs over for the next go around. I have been up at the lake for two weeks so have been forced to watch or listen to the Twins side of things. In April I was hoping that it would be the Royals in playoffs. What is that you say Dayton… Guillen’s injury was the turning point. Yeah, right… The bleeding has stopped and now we can set back and watched Dayton do nothing over the offseason and prepare for another year of Royals baseball. Yes, I need a break from all this fun.

by grudz96 on Oct 5, 2009 12:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

As dissapointing as this season was...

…it did have its share of exciting moments. The 18-11 start made the month of April and most of May exciting to watch. (How fun would it be to be in a true pennant race all year???) Watching Greinke dominate, seeing Butler turn into a solid hitter, Bannister prove he can be a good major league pitcher, and watch Dayton Moore steal Scott Pioli’s “process” mantra, this season never ceased to be intriguing.

While the Royals have pretty much zero cap room this offseason (since they “went for it all” this year) I think this team will be very similar come April. If they were in any other division is baseball, they’d have no shot to win. Since they’re in the AL central, you just never know……

Here’s to hoping Zack wins the Cy Young…… it’s going to be close but I think he’s the sentimental favorite to win it nationwide.

2009

Just like that, it’s over. I can’t believe I’ll miss the Royals, but I will. Horrific season and yet I’m depressed. I’m still of the opinion that we need to fire Trey to make things better, but whatever. I can go to bed and dream of perfect managers and such. What matters is that when I wake up tomorrow, there will be post-season hype on the tube and we won’t be part of it. I’ll be a baseball fan first and a Royals fan second. Whoopee freaking doo. What completely blows is that this year, the Central division was completely up for grabs, and we couldn’t rise up to grab it. We couldn’t get off our knees long enough to even pretend. We just sucked and kept getting suckier.
Boogeyman for the whole season? I think we should all name one. For me, it’s Hillman: Trey Hillman is the biggest crappy cog in our machine of suck. Hillman is the grain of sand that gets into the system and over time causes the engine to go: GUH-GUH-GACK! If I were the type of vindictive prick to really try to blame someone, it would be Hillman. My, how I hate Trey Hillman.
Close runner up: Mark Teahan. Teahan killed so many rallies and sucked in so many key moments, I think of him as the Anti-Royal. Al Pacino would portray Mark Teahan if a movie was made about a baseball player who sucked so bad, Christians deemed him the Anti-Christ. Teahan may be a decent ballplayer someday, but please, please, please let it be somewhere else.
I’m done. Have a great winter, everybody.

We stank this year

except for Zack, Soria, and Butler. And I mean stank. Like the trash bins behind the fish market on Sunday afternoon. Like a backed-up sewer. Like a flat ex-skunk pancaked along the roadside of I-29. Like a migrant worker’s armpit after fourteen hours in the fields. Like the gastric results of a meal of garbanzos, pinto beans, and cauliflower. Like concentrated cat piss.

I have no idea what to do for next season except get rid of all the bad players, which would leave us with about four pitchers, the right side of the infield, and the ghost of Alex Gordon. Getting rid of the bad manager might help. Having a GM who doesn’t acquire overpriced free agents and sign decaying washed-up veterans would, too.

Maybe American baseball fans will need to get used to watching a very unbalanced league, like European soccer leagues. In Spain, either Barcelona or Real Madrid wins the title 90% of the time. Occasionally someone like Valencia or Atlético Madrid sneaks in and wins it, but that’s rare. If you root for someone besides the Big Two, who have payrolls of some $150-200 million, you’re rooting for your team to win a few games, score some nice goals, not get embarrassingly blown out when facing the big boys, and come in fifth or sixth (it’s a 20-team league), while not finishing in the last three spots and getting demoted to Second Division. But you have no hopes of being competitive with the real big teams, ever, and you know and accept this.

Maybe we’d better do the same, and begin to consider a season in which we don’t finish last in the division as successful.

It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.

It's a pity

that the Royals couldn’t take one win from its last series at the Metrodome ;). The Royals were again good against the Tigers. I have a soft spot for them so I can’t be angry.
Zack Greinke for AL Cy Young, no question about that. Happy Offseason for all Royals Fans and a good season 2010.
