Should sports writing be a politics-free zone? Jay Nordlinger from National Review Online thinks so, and explains in this article:

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=YTc4NzJkMjVkOTg1M2UyMjZlYzM0YmJiYzY4YWQzYjY=

(Note: Nordlinger is both a political columnist and a classical music critic. He claims to keep his political opinions out of his criticism.)

I agree with him. When I want to read about politics, I go to National Review or the New Republic or the Economist. When I want to read about sports, I go to ESPN or SI or the KC Star. (Note: I'm not talking about bloggers or posters, or about RR, since Internet message boards are supposed to be open forums. I'm talking about guys in the professional media.)

The obvious exception is when the two mix, such as the Congressional steroid hearings or the sports racial crisis du jour.

Any thoughts?

I think all speech should be highly regulated

I don’t get why we’re so afraid to talk about politics in this country. Yes, people get animated and take things personally, but they also do that when you talk about sports. So what’s the big deal? Maybe talking about politics more would get us to realize normal people can have differing opinions and not everyone that disagrees with you politically is a “wingnut” “commie” or “moron.”

well

i think sports writers should be able to write what they want.

but my guess is that public sentiment is gonna agree with you and columnists will quickly lose their audience if they venture into politics too much

When I want to read about politics, I go to National Review or the New Republic or the Economist.

Hey, everyone seeks a comfortable balance. Good for you for finding yours.

Me, I think most sportswriters are about as smart as my high school cross-country coach and likely to go even farther astray in a discussion of politics than in one of whether the Giants should re-sign Bengie Molina. But I wouldn’t stop them from trying.

actually

i do kinda agree with the author’s sentiment… i’ve just seen too many articles claiming sports journalists are too liberal recently… I would say that the way sports is covered and thought about tends to be deeply conservative, but thats another topic for another day

by royalsreview on Oct 5, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well, they can cover sports in a "conservative" manner

while still retaining and expressing “liberal” political opinions

If you think about the older generation of baseball writers and when they grew up, it makes sense: nostalgia for Willie and Sandy and The Mick, etc. go hand in hand with nostalgia for Jack and Bobby, etc.

No, it doesn't, and no,

they don’t.

Nostalgia is a loaded word. I didn’t like Will’s use of it in anticipation of The Machine, and I like it less here. Please note in the combination of the recent RR demographics and Friday fun threads that all of us older guys said we were happy to be living in the present. Now of course I can’t speak for any actual sportswriters; regardless, you shouldn’t be this careless in assuming “older” == “nostalgic”.

I'm happy living in the present

and i’m “older,” but I’m talking about a specific group of sportswriters — and, yes, given how they talk about the 1960s as the heyday of baseball (e.g., Costas Mantle obsession, also Billy Crystal and the 1960s Yankees) as well as their generation, I think it’s justified.

OK, thanks for the additional context. You did say “older generation of baseball writers”, which I think we should continue to assume to mean is more than just a specific group of them. There has been some really good writing from other members of that group about The Mick and Sandy that’s far from nostalgic, is all I wanted to point out.

fair enough

probably shouldn’t tar them all with Costas’ brush

can’t believe I just typed that… I used to like Costas

Who cares?

If someone wants to slip politics into the mix, who cares? The whole “actors/entertainers/athletes” should just act/entertain/play thing smacks of the constant liberal media working the refs BS that the right wing has successfully pushed for decades. What Liberal Media? I’m taking a fair and balanced look at you Fox. I think it takes real balls for people in the limelight to put their political views on the line, with the knowledge (hopefully) that you’ll instantly piss off close to half of the population and maybe lose some cash in the process. I suppose the cybnical Charlie Daniels type sob’s figure they’ll drum up some right wing cash. Or maybe David Cross sells so more ituneage to the granola eaters. Regardelss, I’m liberal. I think J Garofolo and the dude who was the Dad in Poltergeist are both loons. No matter how misguided, I guess I like that they feel passionate enough to go for it. If you are getting your news from TV, or unfortunately, many newspapers, you are screwed anyway. Old media = baseball card counting stats.

Obviously, it shouldn't be regulated

I agree with the sentiment… It’s a psychological thing with me, too. I don’t like being talked down to, even (or especially) when I agree with the sportswriters political views anyway. Um, thanks Rob, but I’m pretty sure I don’t need to give me that self-righteous tweet just because you read Howard Zinn just before you go to bed! I know you didn’t graduate from KU, but that’s no reason to flaut your brain’s “little man complex.”

I lived in the same dorm as Neyer

during our first year (84-85), but I went on to graduate. I went to a few College Young Democrats meetings with him and a couple of other people. Let’s just say that my thought has evolved, or devolved, whichever way you prefer. I didn’t know him very well, but he always seemed like a nice guy to me.
