So We Would

Have been money and WAR ahead playing TPJJ?

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Please refer to insanity wolf:

And Make Sure

You’re locked in for 2 years.

TPJ's defensive stats are weird

for a supposed wizard, he didn’t get much love from uzr…

by Freneau on Nov 10, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

His lack of hitting hurt his glove

His confidence was just trounced. I feel for the guy, but mostly I’m mad that they kept running him out there…

by Dadunca on Nov 10, 2009 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

That's because he wasn't a wizard.

I don’t know what people saw out there, but TPJ looked like Derek Jeter could beat him except for the occasional play that TPJ would get to up the middle that was crazy.

by AxDxMx on Nov 10, 2009 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

His stats last year were wacked

I am working on the UZR projections for next year and he is the 4th highest rated SS in the game behind Evertt, Hardy and Vizquel.

wow had no idea yuni was that bad

i didnt think he did to bad with the stick but wow those stats tell different story… this might make me an official yuni/dayton hater now

by rockchalks7 on Nov 10, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

yeah, it's too bad none of us saw this coming

(ahem)

Oh well, but at least Dayton showed up when it came to Jacobs

(um)

and Bloomquist

(wait a minute)

wow, it’s almost as if he’s one of the worst GMs in baseball. Your move, Omar.

A sight to ease

the pain that Yuni’s UZR rating causes, that’s for sure.

What it has to do with Omar Minaya, I have no idea.

Is that what happens when you hotlink something you shouldn't?

I’m not complaining, but I don’t get how it’s connected to Omar. :)

by AxDxMx on Nov 10, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

saw it/her on South Side Sox

they were using it to ease pain as well

although I guess there’s an omar connection somewhere, maybe through Steve Philips

by Freneau on Nov 10, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Her JAR is incredible!

Her Jiggles Above Replacement are running at 20.2!

Of course, I shouldn’t trust just what the stats say about her, I should scout her out in person.

by AxDxMx on Nov 10, 2009 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, worse projected defensive SS going into next year.

Yuni, is that you?

My problem with this is sample size

While I am not arguing these players’ defensive worthiness one way or the other, I do think we need to be careful putting too much stock in approximately the same sample size that brought you a Bloomquist 1.000+ OPS earlier this year.

by Discodave on Nov 10, 2009 5:23 PM EST reply actions

except that

Yuni’s stats elsewhere reflect something roughly the same, and so the scouting reports.

Scouting reports not made by Royals scouts, of course

I feel pretty comfortable saying he’s worthless as a player.

Might be an improvement as a GM, though.

valid point...

the verdict is still out on Aviles, and I don’t know how TPJ’s #s ended up bad…

by Freneau on Nov 10, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Figured out the process

If you add the numbers up, they’re horrible.

If you multiply the negative numbers though, it results an awesomely positive number!!!

I'd guess Aviles is better

Between the injury, small sample size, etc. I imagine given a full, healthy year he’d put up a neutral or positive UZR.

On the other hand I wonder if Luis Hernandez is really able to consistently put up a positive UZR over a full season. If so, he would have been a far better and cheaper option than Yuni.

by jsolo on Nov 10, 2009 5:45 PM EST reply actions

My guess

is that Aviles isn’t as bad as last season, but that’s he’s still a bit below average.

Hernandez is probably the same or slightly better than Aviles defensively.

Aviles isn’t a good hitter, but he’s probably okay for an SS. He’s also a really good baserunner. He’d be a decent stopgap.

Honestly I never understood why people were down on Aviles

He always seemed to have average range, an average arm, but really good instincts for positioning and that Derek Jeter-esque penchant for not botching easy plays.
His accuracy could use improvement, but I just don’t see why people are always down on him.
Is he as good as his 31.6 UZR/150 last year? probably not, but I really think hes probably a +10 player at SS.

I refuse to set up a signature....DAMMIT

by RoyalPug on Nov 10, 2009 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno

really really small sample both season, and prior to his time in the majors, scouts didn’t think he could stick at SS. Even in 2008 the Fans had him as a bit below-average at SS.

Jeter may not seem to botch many plays, but we’re talking about a guy who made massive strides the last couple seasons and whose true talent is (at best) still probably an average SS.

Subjectively, as great as Avilanche was in 2008, by almost all accounts he just looked horrible in the field and at the plate in 2009. It’s hard to say how much of that was nursing an injury, but still…

Don’t get me wrong, I like Aviles, too, and think he should start for the Royals next season. But +10 at SS? Jimmy Rollins probably isn’t a +10 SS anymore, and I feel pretty comfortable saying he’s clearly better on defense than Aviles.

Forget about Aviles...

Dayton ain’t havin’ any. Just like Kila and Disco and etc. If he didn’t see it with his infallible scouting eye, it doesn’t exist. Those guys are toast in our organization. Dayton has no imagination or balls.
