Source: Royals committed to Gordon at third
They view Fields in LF and are currently trying to move DDJ. I thought we were trying to upgrade our defense, not make it worse.
I'm torn. I like DDJ, but I doubt we make the playoffs before his contract is up. Right now, I guess I'm up for trading anyone, it's just a matter of return.

I doubt the Royals have a full grasp of DDJ's value to be honest.
which means more than likely we are gonna get raped.
This space for rent.

From what I've gathered, basically
Fields = MannyBManny in left?
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Also,
Josh Fields doesn’t look like the alien from Predator.
Based on his size and strength,
I bet the predator monster would be a pretty good ballplayer.
Pecota, watch over us.
I guess it's a calculated risk
Does he help you win? Or does he eat everyone else on the team?
Good idea to get rid of DDJ
We have way too many outfielders, we need to trade to get more middle infielders.
The more competition there is in Spring Training, the better our infield will be.

maybe Joagie can mentor him on how to play through a hip injury
if you can call “hitting .200 and not playing any defense” playing through
Blank
The pitchers are spoiled
from having ONE good fielder playing behind them. This must be rectified immediately. Everyone must conform to a Yuni-fied standard of defense.

Ok, I laughed at this comment.

Really, brilliant PR work by Dayton

Albert Einstein tried to come up with a Unified Field Theory and failed
So I don’t expect Dayton Moore’s Yuni-fied Fielding Theory to do much better.

royals want to make it show he can maintain for next 5 yrs in AAA
otherwise known as the KILA treatment
Moving DDJ for the right price = good
If Fields is just there as a stopgap, this could actually turn out to be a smart move
Keep in mind that the defensive standard at LF is pretty low, and UZR for Fields there is so small as to be close to worthless… Adjusting the Fans Scouting report, he might be average out there…
Now, will his bat play? Just workig from his limited time in the majors leagues…. No. He might have a chance of being average. Let’s put it this way, IF you but the always-optimistic Bill James projections, even if he’s average defensively, he’s be about an average (~2 WAR) player out there… And that’s with optimistic forecasts offensively and defensively. James projects him with a .342 wOBA, while I have him at .321…. which makes him more like a 1 WAR player, assuming he’s average defensively.
Trading assets is a good idea, if they know how to value him. DDJ’s almost as valuable as Jason Bay if Bay has to play the field, and a lot cheaper.

The realistic trade options (i.e., no Soria) to bring anything back of value are basically DDJ, and then maybe Bannister and Callaspo
Coming back from injuries, neither Meche nor Gordon would fetch fair value (and trading Gordon would be a lousy idea even if he was healthy). As an unconventional player, Bannister’s market is limited. Like Gordon, Callaspo is the type of club controlled player the Royals should be trying to stockpile, not trade away, but he might be expendable because of his defense and the fact that 2B are easy to replace (as the Royals just picked one up for a bench player who they were about to non-tender). That leaves DDJ as the one good piece to move for younger, cheaper building blocks.
Fields is a nice little gamble, as there is an outside chance he puts things together like Nelson Cruz or even Ryan Ludwick. His walk rate has been solid throughout his career and he has cut his K rate in the minors. There is also a reasonable chance he can adequately play leftfield — unlike the Jack Custs of the world, Fields has some athletic ability. He most likely does not pan out, but giving an audition to a reclamation project like Fields is the right idea for a rebuilding season (as is stocking up on 0-3 year players).

Saddest part of EVERY trade rumor involving the Royals
Even if there is some potential logic to what they might be doing, everyone then remembers that Moore will have to be smart enough to avoid getting ripped off.
I’m not necessarily for moving DDJ (10.7 million for 2 years of him is a BARGAIN), but if the “process” is now to get young by acquiring 0-3 players for arb eligible/expensive players, in an attempt to contend in say, 2012-2014 range, then at least that is a “process” that might jive with the current state of the farm system and the current state of the ML assets.
Having said all that, I then shudder, because I doubt that Moore will either evaluate DDJ correctly, or ask for the correct 0-3 year players in a trade.
It’s sad to have so little faith in your GM – but that’s where we are until he proves differently, IMHO.

How about this gamble:
Move DDJ back to CF, then gamble that Fields will regain enough of his power stroke to be adequate in LF.
Granted, doesn’t fit in with the new mantra of improving defense, nor of acquiring “0-3” players. Still, might be preferable than seeing Moore target/overpay for the wrong CF candidate during the offseason.

Between Yuni as the starting SS...
and Fields as the new starting LF, Dayton has obviously used The ProcessTM to determine that opposing teams will not hit balls to the left side of the field in 2010. Remarkable. It’s like The Force.

with a possible Callaspo-Guillen right side to go with the Fields-Yuni left side
Royals pitchers need to start working on inducing pop-ups.

One last point
If Moore had evaluated his system/team properly during the 2008 offseason and concluded that contention wasn’t likely until 2012 or later, then perhaps THAT would have been the time to move DDJ (coming off a career year, rather than now, when his value is seemingly down a bit from the year before)

Good part of the link
I’m glad they still think highly of Gordon.
Even if he never develops until what we hoped, considering the Royals will suck in 2010 anyway, it really behooves them to simply writeoff Alex’ 09 campaign to injury and see if he can continue the improvement curve he posted in 08 from 07.
What I’m saying is, the Royals should gamble on him developing into a star, even if there is realistically only a 5-10% chance of that happening now…
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
So, what would constitute a good return for DDJ?
I think he would be worth a young starting pitcher, and if Moore wants him to be a “0-3” player, than said starting pitcher should probably be reasonably expected to be a #3 starter in a ML rotation right now.

Another team's version of Alex Gordon
Or something built around a non-elite top prospect (in other words, ignore the top third of Baseball America’s Top 100 List), or a couple of prospects just below that level.
hard to think of a team that would give up pretty good prospects for a LF
Find a team who needs a left-handed hitting LF and valued defense? I’m drawing a blank as to who that could be? Perhaps the Cards if they can’t sign Holiday?
so that they can trade him
not that they will, but they’ve got some serious budget decisions to make
Blank
What would you give for two years of Jason Bay at 2/$10M?
I’m not saying that ‘s what the Royals would get, but it’s about what they should get. Bay’s a far better hiter than DDJ, but the defensive difference is so great is practicallly makes the rest of it up.
There might be a post on this at a certain website in the morning…

Basically the entire AL West
Rangers (who could play him in LF or CF), Mariners, Angels (if Vlad does not return). Oakland may want to look younger and already has a crowded outfield, but DDJ fits the A’s type of player.
The Giants could use a younger version of Randy Winn. The Tigers could use another OF too, giving DH at bats to Ordonez and Guillen.
Some teams would likely be fine with playing DDJ in center too, and other teams might create openings with trades.
more twisting of words simply to take shots at DM
“Fields, instead, is viewed as a possible left fielder if the Royals find a suitable trade for David DeJesus.”
NO WHERE does it say they are TRYING to trade DDJ. No where.

They should be trying to.

i don't think so
i’d let it be known that he could be had, but TRYING to trade him seems like a poor idea. hell, he might have more value next June anyways when injuries start to pile up for other teams. the fact that he can play any outfield spot makes him that much more valuable mid season.
baseball rules.
I won't disagree with that.
However, the longer they hold him the less value he has for the acquiring team.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera and it's a
done deal for me. The Yanks could use DDJ in center and Hughes could step right into our rotation. Cabrera probably just a 4th OF. An A ball prospect would just be icing on the cake.
Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.
