Kaegel Counters Dutton
Here are a few of the money quotes:
On the Callaspo trade:
"Callaspo, mistakenly linked to the Dodgers in trade rumors, might be a keeper because the .300 hitter also fits into the Royals' budget for next year."
On Gordon shifting to 1b
GMDM says "It's not something we've discussed." and "I'm quite confident that Alex is going to be an above-average defensive player wherever he ends up playing. But right now he's our third baseman."
Ahhh sh*t. Kaegel just re-raised Dutton pre-flop. The pot is getting bigger and the off-season has barely begun!

Hmmm... this is a tough one
I HOPE that Kaegel’s right, but wow, Bob Dutton is widely (and rightly) respected, and Kaegel is, um, how can I say this… DICK KAEGEL

I have no doubt...
that the royals have a single coherent plan that they are openly telling everyone. well run organizations are usually very easy to read

I really do wonder
if this is intentional on the part of the front office. They clearly want to keep their information close to the vest, and I wouldn’t put it past them to put out conflicting information to two Royals reporters just to keep the unwashed masses in the dark.
Then again, I just love a good conspiracy theory.

They could also be seeing who, if anybody, is leaking ideas.
Get out 4 different trades to 4 suspects and see which one hits the news. Dayton is about that paranoid to do such a thing. If only Wong was one of them.

Reporting unattributed "talk"
I think a lot of reported rumblings — such as Dutton’s “developing scenario” with Callaspo — are just thoughts, ideas and random comments from front office personnel. There are many, many people in a MLB organization’s front office. They all have ideas, and some of them talk to the media. When they are candid about their thoughts and ideas, they know guys like Dutton won’t name them in the article.
Long story short, we shouldn’t get too bent out of shape (or too excited) by various rumors, thoughts, ideas and possibilities that guys like Mellinger, Dutton and Kaegel report. They don’t make this stuff up, but there’s still little reason to believe that any of it is reflective of actual plans of the organization.

What changed between the time of the Callaspo rumor and the denial?
I think they thought Callaspo was going to qualify as a Super 2, and were trying to trade him. When they found out he was cheap for another year, they decided to keep him, or that they needed more than just a 28 year old catcher with no meaningful MLB experience.
