Royals Review Community Prospect List: #1
Before we get to the top of my personal Royals Prospect List, I thought we would let you all voice who you think the Royals Top Prospects are. I think we did this last year, I can't remember who spearheaded it, but I'll go ahead and get the ball rolling. I haven't decided if we'll do 10, 15 or 20. You can vote for who you think deserves the top spot and make your case in the comment section. The choices below are listed alphabetically.

It really depends on how you look at prospects...
I mean, I voted for Crow as I see him having the shortest time in the minors and he could be a #3-#5 in the rotation in very short order. On the other hand, I think Montgomery and Moustakas may have higher ceilings. I’m really excited about Wil Myers too, but he’s at least 2 years away and more likely 3-4. If Hosmer has another year like last year, it may be time to start whispering about him being a bust (although the whispers have started already). Anyways, I know it’s just for fun.

Those two things are always in tension
but my bottom line is: who is the last player in our minor league system that I would want to part with?

that's a good way of looking at it

If that's the case, I may pick Wil Myers
He’s a 17-18 year old kid that had 14 homers in 22 games in his latest high school season. He sounds like a Bryce Harper without as much experience at catcher, but the bat has more power. Even if he doesn’t end up at catcher, this kid will rake.

And I forgot to add
“without the hype” to the Bryce Harper comparison. He was expected to be a 1st rounder and we got him in the 3rd.

where in the hell have you read that Myers bat has more powre than Harper?

Well I read that Myers had 14 homers in 22 games
While Harper had 3 homers all of last season, unless the stats on MaxPreps are incorrect. To me, that’s more power.

thats more home runs in a 22 game sample size without knowing ANYTHING else....
thats a terrible way to judge things. I think you’d be better off by reading what scouts have to say…and that is that Harper has as much power as any HS prospect ever…I’ve never heard anything similar about Myers. Theres a zero percent chance that Harper drops to the 3rd round like Myers…b/c he according to all accounts, except for some meaningless HS stats, the far superior player…and I even like Myers

Yeah... meaningless.
I’m not saying Myers is going to amount to more than Bryce Harper or that he’s better now, I’m saying we’ve already got our somewhat crappier version of him at a far cheaper price, and 14 > 3 now (though Harper’s swing looks very powerful). Here are Harper’s stats for ’09: http://www.maxpreps.com/athletes/MLSlI-2c_0ejnUuzjO9p9w/baseball-spring-09/stats-bryce-harper.htm
He played in Nevada, Utah, and California, batted over .500, had 19 extra base hits in 90 PAs and 23 games, but just 3 homers. The kid looks pretty good based on stats. I’m sure his doubles power can morph into homerun power. Myers had .532 with 14 home runs, seven doubles and 41 RBI, which is the most stats I can find for his last HS season. Myers is also obviously not the catcher that Harper is, though even scouts think he may not stick there. Myers may not stick either, but from the scouting reports I’ve read, IIRC, he could play almost anywhere on the diamond with his athletic ability.
And Myers was not drafted high because after the Royals passed, everyone else assumed it would take too much money to sign him, or he might choose to go to school. There is no such danger about Harper. He’s playing, and someone is paying him big bucks to do it. There is no fall back for Harper unless he sits out a year.
If Myers is capable of being an average defensive catcher, and can put up 20+ homer seasons with a good OBP, then he is the Royals top prospect. If we can extend the concept of positional value to WAR, why can’t we do it with our draft prospects?

Is that like Miguel Olivo; just with better D?

Olivo had 2.2 WAR this year
without defensive adjustment and a .292 OBP. Add in 80 more points of OBP, and that’s probably a 3 WAR player.

im just saying that high school stats are pretty meaningless...
we dont know anything about the context….competition, size of the fields, etc.
There were 3 guys on my HS team who hit more HRs than Harper…does that mean that they were also more powerful?
Listen, I like Myers alot, but I’d trade him in a second for the right to pay Harper his $15 million or whatever, largely based on Harper’s (by all accounts) superior power and extreme ceiling. Everything I’ve read has him being one of the top 5 or so HS talents in the past 20 years, up there with Hamilton, Griffey, Arod and Upton….whereas Myers was seen as a possible mid 1st round guy who fell.

I'd trade Myers for Harper too, but Myers didn't "fall"
There are legitimate concerns about wasting your pick if a kid has signed with a college and you don’t offer enough money.
I think the problem we have encountered here is that I said Myers has more power, and you think that means that I think he’s the better prospect. Not even close. I know a lot of HS competition is meaningless, but just 3 homers seems kind of low without really good context for “the most powerful bat ever”. It’s not like I was comparing 6 homers to 3 homers, it was 14. That’s 467% more than Harper. I would guess there’s some significance to that even if it just boils down to age difference. All of Harper’s doubles could have been base hits off the base of the wall, but in HS, those tend to be triples, which he also had a bunch of. So I’m sure the power’s there. It just didn’t show as homers.

But he hit some batting practise balls on to the catwalk at Tropicana field!!!!
Seriously. No doubt this kid is an exceptional talent, and worthy of the no.1 pick. But for a lot of people, that youtube clip is all they know of him. You are perfectly entitled to question why that same raw power has been seen at other times though.

interesting to see Montgomery so high
is that a positive vote for him, or more a negative vote for some of the other guys
by royalsreview on Nov 16, 2009 4:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I believe a positive vote
He’s had an incredible career so far and this is a great form of recognition for that. However, Moose has had two really good seasons as well. Either way, we’ve got two good ones at the top followed by some other really good ones as well.

look at the gobbler's numbers in the same leagues and it will lessen your excitement...it did mine

That seems like a superficial comparison
by nwroyal on Nov 16, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the leagues that he has put up the numbers in are what gives me pause...
not saying he’s gobble, but I’m definitely not putting too much stock in any of those guys until they perform well in a more neutral environment, the same way im not jumping off of the moose bandwagon

only one way to find out
bring him up early, then jerk him back-and-forth between the rotation and the pen and mess with his pitches until he turns into a LOOGY, then use him against RHH and wonder why he gets rocked.

Has this ever been done?
Seems like it’d work.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

i think it's a bit of both
moustakas and hosmer let us all down in ‘09 when we were expecting complete domination. crow didn’t pitch during the regular season. so, there’s nobody clearly deserving to hold onto a higher ranking and montgomery certainly has the makings of an excellent starter and had a great year in full-season ball.

Lough or Bianchi
The thing I like about where our farm system is at now is that you could put Lough and Bianchi in the mix if you are talking about close to big league ready but maybe not best prospects. You gotta love the way Myers started his professional career. I would say that highest upside, IMO, would be Mouse. I know he hasn’t performed as well as we would have liked but I keep forgetting he’s only 20 years old.

I went with Duffy...
I think he will be the first on the list to be with the big club. Until Crow pitches in pro ball then I will look at him. I am taking a big wait and see attitude for both Mous and Hosey. I will give Myers another year before I would anoint him #1. Go Duffs….
