Shane Costa and Ryan Shealy Eras Officially End

MLB has released the list of six-year minor league free agents, which includes notable Royals Shane Costa, Ryan Shealy, and Chris Lubanski.  Under the rules, a minor leaguer with six full years of credited service time in the minors can become a free agent if his organization does not place him on its 40-man major league roster.  Neither Costa, Shealy, nor Lubanski were expected back, so this comes as no surprise.  Costa is now free to fulfill his destiny as a backup outfielder for the Padres, while Shealy and Lubanski will be looking for jobs filling out AAA rosters.

CHONE Projections for 2010

Costa: 279/336/418, +1 batting runs above average

Shealy: 245/329/398, -2 batting runs above average

Lubanski: 243/309/379, -13 batting runs above average

The full list of now former Royals is after the break.

Star-divide

Pitchers: RHP Juan Abreu, RHP John Bannister, LHP Tim Hamulack, RHP Luke Hudson, LHP Michael O'Connor, RHP Chad Orvella, LHP Heath Phillips

Catchers: J.R. House, John Suomi, Vance Wilson

Infielders: Chase Fontaine, Ryan Shealy, Corey Smith

Outfielders: Cory Aldridge, Shane Costa, Chris Lubanski, Brian McFall, Tim Raines Jr.

Juan Abreu is a mild surprise as he has posted double digit K/9 rates throughout his career, but given that he also has posted a BB/9 rate near 6.0, the surprise is only mild.

The players can always re-sign with the Royals, so some of them may be back.

are we going to get a farewell post?

Maybe not for Shealy, but Costa and Lubanski have been such fixtures that they’re almost more familiar than most of the guys currently on the MLB club.

Costa No!

Costa, Shealy, and Lubanski all had some talent (just not enough), then got hurt, and then forgotten. Farewell and good luck.

Yes, He Was

The starting 1B in 2007 until his underperformance (mostly due to injury) opened the door for Gload to play way too much.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Chris Lubanski

Should be given an opportunity simply because he was a 1st rounder.
Is it possible he’d be better than Mitch Maier? He’s younger than him.

by Royal from Queens on Nov 17, 2009 6:49 PM EST reply actions

But Maier was a first rounder too!

At this point, his draft position really does not matter, especially with Lubanski, who was drafted as a CF and then filled out like a 1B type. There is no reason to keep pertuating a mistake made five years ago. Matt Bush was a first overall pick, but no one is clamoring for him. Lubanski has hit 231/300/407 in AAA, so cutting bait is certainly understandable. But he is young enough and had some success in the lower minors that someone else will give him a shot again at AAA.

Some of CHONE's projections for minor league fodder seems prettty optimistic

SOmeone emailed me wondering if something was wrong with CHONE’s scripts, but I asked Sean about it and he said he thought things were cool…

If Costa is really a league-average hitter, he should be on the roster ahead of Anderson and Guillen fasho.

I'd guess about average

potentially decent 4th OF, although it’s worth asking someone who’s seen him play the field a lot.

MARK MY WORDS

Costa will have a productive Major League Career for several years. I’m thinking something like a mix between Jeff Conine & Michael Tucker…the type of player that never does anything great, but he does a lot of things just good enough to keep getting jobs.

BOOM! ROASTED!

by GoBabies!! on Nov 17, 2009 10:28 PM EST reply actions

Maybe Tucker

but Conine was actually pretty good in the mid-90s then again in early 00s. Above average player. I like Costa, but if he does that it will be the biggest upset since Jamey Wright pitched a scoreless inning.

You schmuck

Jamey Wright never threw a scoreless inning.

I don't think he'll be that good

But a decent NL bench bat. Something like oh…John Vander Wal back in the day.

I always kindof liked Shealy

And really wished we had actually seen what he could do.

He hit pretty well in Colorado in 2005 in limited action
He did well in AAA in 2006 and was exiled to Kansas City where he continued to play decent
He hurt himself in 2007 and just couldn’t hit so he was exiled to Omaha for 2008
He hit well there and then did great in KC in September
So, Mike Jacobs gets signed and he gets hurt and his time is over

Yeah, he had a knack for getting hurt at all the wrong times. But whenever he wasn’t hurt, he hit the ball

Technically

We can re-sign these guys. But yea, they’re probably done in the organization.

What about Chris “You Will Remember This Day For the Rest of Your Life” Lubanski?

It would make sense to resign Costa and Lubanski, right?

I’m not saying they are good or anything – but considering the utter lack of talent at the ML level, and the lack of OF prospects in the system (save for Lough, who is probably not ready until late 2010 or beginning 2011 anyway) – wouldn’t it make sense to try to resign these guys as organizational depth?

at the moment

Costa might be the best RF option the royal habe. Def. Better than Guillen, maybe Fields, too

See, I keep thinking of Guillen as the fulltime DH next year;

that’s why I think we are woefully short of OFs all of a sudden.

(Not implying that Guillen is actually good enough with the bat to be a fulltime DH – just that they are looking to making that move. Since it’s the Royals, I’m prepared to be disappointed, and by disappointed, I mean subjected to another 120 or so games of watching that clown PLOD around the outfield, covering less ground than a snail in January)
