Royals sign P Brad Thompson

The Royals have signed former Cardinals right hander Brad Thompson to a one year minor league deal. Thompson, 27, was 2-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 80 innings in 2009, and has a lifetime 4.36 ERA in 385 MLB innings. He is a groundball pitcher, with a career groundball rate of 52.2%. His strikeout numbers are very low - 4.20 per nine innings for his career due to a fastball that tops out at about 87 mph, but he doesn't manage to walk a ton of guys, and when he keeps the ball low he can be somewhat effective. Not a bad candidate at all for a long relief/5th starter. Certainly better than signing Horacio Ramirez for $1.9 million.

its a nickname vivaelbirdos came up with

based on he fell into bad taste with LaRussa who runs an animal charity, and someone had posted he must have kicked a puppy, thus puppy kicker.

but seriously hes had flashes of being good, but just was never consistent, change of scenery might be good for him but kinda par for the course for Dayton to sign someone thats inconsistent…I am glad however if they do call him up which they probably will I will get to see a former cardinal at the games since i live here in KC and all…hopefully the royals can pull out of the basement, this move wont be the reason why but it would be nice to see people around this town actually have something good to say about some sports

At least give them the correct story Destroyer....

After a loss to the KC Royals in ‘07, PK gave this quote:

"I can’t remember the last time I’ve been this frustrated," Thompson said. “I’m almost to the point I want to find a puppy and kick it pretty much.”

Here’s a link to the story.

"Everyone in here comes to the yard ready to play every day. I’ll take this group, any day until the day I die."
"This whole Cardinals thing.....I don’t know if you guys are a believer, but I’m a believer."

This looks a lot more like

the Dayton who built our 2007 and 2008 bullpens than like the 2009 version. Maybe we got Bizarro Dayton last year for some reason.

Or payroll limitations forced his hand

I still think Dayton would be a much better GM if he had Florida’s payroll.

Dammit

one of my least favorite Cardinals. He was never anything but a mop-up guy for the Cards.

Low risk/Low reward is more like it

These moves smack of organizational depth to me. Dayton is building AAA so injuries don’t turn an 85 loss team into a 100 loss team, or so he thinks.

by AxDxMx on Nov 19, 2009 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

He's arguably our 3rd-best SP at the moment.

I suppose that is building organizational depth.

I exaggerate

but I will not be surprised if he is a major part of the 25-man in 2010. Maybe beginning on Opening Day.

I guess it wouldn't surprise me either, but I don't think this guy is any good at all

Or he would have gotten an MLB contract. He has Brandon Duckworth and Luke Hudson upside.

by AxDxMx on Nov 19, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Pretty good move

He can be a good swing man type and he’s on a Minor league deal so no risk

by Gobroks on Nov 19, 2009 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

It is no exaggeration...

who else we going to get to take Jamey Wright’s spot? This guy looks like a 250 IP reliever!

In all seriousness, this is a good zero risk move. It’s not like we had the rock star AA pitching squad coming up this year, and we are losing a bunch of our better AAA pitching to the FA market (Chen, DiNardo, etc.). This guy doesn’t have a lot of upside, but could realistically eat some innings at the back of the ML rotation if injuries hit again.

However, we really need to sign or trade for a left-handed reliever. Right now, the only people we got that are even considerations are John Bale and Dusty Hughes. Dusty doesn’t bother me, but I don’t want Bale on the AA team right now.

Any suggestions/rumors?

There always seem to be a lot of LOOGYs available for cheap

And a lot of teams go for those kind of players in the Rule 5.

Some smart-aleck in St. Louis heard about the signing

and said the Royals now have a legitimate staff ace. Before I could respond, somebody quickly reminded the person that Greinke won the Cy Young only two days ago.

Let me do some checking

But I believe that’s one more than the other side of Missouri has this year ;)

true

however the cardinals had two finish in the top 3 of the voting, and Timmy, Waino, and Carp all deserved it, waino put up grienke like stats in the last half

I wonder what Greinke could do in the NL.

Do you think they could even get a hit off of him?

by AxDxMx on Nov 21, 2009 11:20 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I've always thought of him as a RH Jimmy Gobble

Totally unfair to Thompson – he is clearly better than that; it’s just that his pitching style reminded me of what Gobble should have been.

This was a nice pickup, even if he only serves as organizational depth at AAA. More than likely, he will be used in some role in KC. If we’re lucky, it will be in long relief only, thus indicating that some of the rotation members are finally living up to their potential. (I’m looking at you, Hochevar and Davies)

would have been better had he only been used as a LOOGY…

DO NOT WANT

I’ve been watching the Cardinals for a long time, and I know this guy is not very good at all. I thought he had a propensity for giving up homers, but I checked on Fangraphs. He’s about 50/50 in his GB/FB ratio, and 10% of those flyballs made it out of the park last year. Bill James projects a 1.13 HR/9 out of him in 2010, up from 0.90 last season. Not good, but not as bad as I thought. Still, his K/BB ratio is crap and he can’t even get people out when he’s BABIP lucky. Factor in that he’s been playing in front of mostly solid defenses the past few seasons and the fact that he looks like a mutated giant 6 year old and you have a completely unappealing pitcher. I hope he never sniffs the majors for us.

We pitch to the flyball in KC. Ask Grienke.

And the parks in the AL Central include KC, Detroit, Cleveland, Chicago, and the new Minnesota ballpark. The parks in the NL Central include StL, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Houston.

Name for me 3 bandboxes in the AL Central. Now name 3 for me in the NL Central. Houston/Cincinnati/Chicago all are homer happy parks… His HR/9 will improve this season.
