Can I start with the obvious ones?

Brett, Saberhagen, White, Balboni, Wilson

Randa… Shit, Will already said Randa…

I'll give it a shot

Balboni, White, Iorg, Orta, McRae, Concepcion, Biancalana, Brett, Smith, Sheridan, Jones, Motley, Wilson, Sundberg, Saberhagen, Gubizca, Leibrandt, Black, Quisenberry…

I’m terrible at remembering the bullpen guys.

They never used the pen back then!

Them were the good ol’ days!

An easy one you left out:

Danny Jackson

wasn't Steve Farr

one of the bullpen guys?

Stever Farr?

I think he played some for in 85

by nwroyal on Nov 4, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Farr

Farr came up big in Game 3 of the ALCS that year.

4 1/3 innings of 2-hit ball with 3 strikeouts and no runs to earn the win.

I urge people to go back and study those KC-Tor boxscores.

Dick Howser COMPLETELY SCHOOLED Bobby Cox in that series. I know we all think managers don’t make that much difference – but in this series, I swear, Howser was damn near as important in Brett, in some ways.

Reader’s Digest condensed version: what you will notice is that Howser used his excess talent at SP to alternate right handed starters with a left handed reliever, then follow up with right handed setup men and the Quiz. Cox took the bait EVERY TIME, and made premature moves in which he pinch hit for Oliver with a righty in the middle of the game. Game 3 was a perfect example of this dynamic played out.

I've heard a few Jays lament

At what a disaster Cox was as manager back then. And those were really great Jays teams.

I suppose at least they are a team worth remembering

Can’t say that about too many Royals teams lately.

Omar Moreno!

Not on post season roster – but Omar “the outmaker” was picked up for the stretch run and actually hit well that year, as I recall. He even contributed a big HR in one game (inside the park, if I remember correctly?).

That team was good – but there was something beyond statistics going on as well. Shit like this kept happening; guys played over their heads as needed all year long. I know we don’t believe in chemistry and karma, and to speak of such is sacrilege on a stats-oriented site like this – but if ever one was to believe in it, the 85 Royals could have served as prime examples of those concepts at least being possible. I mean, yeah, they had the best pitching in all of baseball – but the offense was 13th in runs scored in the AL, which should have sorta cancelled that out.

Funniest part of that year – I can remember a few fellow vendors of mine discussing the team in September, when it wasn’t even assured that they would even make the playoffs, and our consensus was that they might do something really special this year. True story – and we had no business thinking that, probably. That team just had an air about it…

I know what you mean.

I was seven and JUST KNEW that we would win the world series. Probably just a kid who couldn’t imagine losing, but it worked out for me…

I don't recall an inside-the-park HR

But I recall that he hit 2 triples very soon after joining the team, and that made me feel he was an appropriate substitute for the injured Willie Wilson, who had 21 triples that season.

Moreno

Omar had some HUGE hits at the end of the season when Willie Wilson was injured.

Just looked on BaseballReference.com

The only ones I missed were Mark Huismann and Larry Gura, whom I’d forgotten was still with the team to start the season.

Wow Omar Moreno

Forgot about him.

Kudos for getting Hegman, who had one game, no PAs in his MLB career.

Royals roster

I’m not cheating.

Brett, White, Wilson, McRae, Orta, Iorg, Motley, Sheridan, Farr, Sundberg, Wathan, Quirk, Balboni, Biancalana, Concepcion, Pryor, Lynn Jones, Mike Jones, Leonard, Black, Quisenberry, Beckwith, Saberhagen, Jackson, Leibrandt, Gubicza, Huismann, Farr, Jim Scranton, Mike LaCoss, Lonnie Smith, Gura, Moreno

Not bad at all

You got the two I missed, but missed some of the ones I got. Not that you can be faulted, after all, Bob Hegman is the most obscure Royal of all time.

I was 10 months old...

Love hearing stories about it. Just reading your accounts on here makes me smile.

by brandonh981 on Nov 4, 2009 3:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

here we go

C Sundberg, Wathan, Quirk
1B Balboni
2B White
SS Biancalana, Concepcion
3B Brett, Pryor
OF Smith, Wilson, Motley, Sheridan. Jones
DH McRae, Orta, Iorg
SP Saberhagen, Leibrandt, Jackson, Black, Gubicza
RP Farr, Beckwith, Quisenberry

they used an 8 man staff in the playoffs…Quirk replaced Mike Jones at the last second
The Royals only had 3 starts from anyone but the listed five that season (Mike Jones and Farr)

Mike LaCoss was an off season pick up that did not pan out…Leonard had made a come back but was not with the team in the post season (he was working out in Florida during the post season) long time Royal Larry Gura was with the team to start out the season but did not last

A special player was Omar Moreno he was picked up after the deadline after his release and was dominant his first 2 weeks with the club…look it up and I am sure many forgot how good he was that month…He was not on the playoff roster (the Cardinals BTW had a similar story with Cesar Cedeno-who was on their post season roster)

Wasn't Cedeno only on the Cards roster

as an injury replacement for Vince Coleman?

i don't think so

Cedeno hit .434 in the regular season after coming over from the Reds…He was also on the LCS roster while Coleman was still healthy…I believe Brian Harper was added to the roster after the injury to Coleman

Bastard!

I was 5 and stuck in the middle of the state and hadn’t yet caught wind of the Royals existence. I had to go and choose the losing side between KC and StL because Marshall actually had (and still does I think) a Royals affiliate station, and we lived closer to KC. Lucky me.
