Word on the street (or 610) is that the Royals have declined options on Olivo, Yabuta, and Crisp.
But how will this team survive in 2010 without 3 catchers on the 25 man roster?

From the Press Release just sent out:
Kansas City, MO (November 6, 2009) – The Kansas City Royals have declined 2010 options for outfielder Coco Crisp, catcher Miguel Olivo and right-handed pitcher Yasuhiko Yabuta. Crisp and Olivo are now eligible to file for free agency. Yabuta can elect free agency if he doesn’t sign a 2010 Major League contract with the Royals by November 16.

Of course, all of this cost a total of $1.1M in buyouts.

Well, the Crisp contract
we traded for rather than wrote.

You count John Buck as a catcher? Weird. Hasn't looked like one to me.

And Olivo is?
He literally can’t catch.

"But how will this team survive in 2010 without (fill in the blank)"
Now there’s a great idea that could fill a thread with a couple of hundred sarcastic comments…

They aren't gone yet though
Dayton could still offer arbitration

Do you think Olivo accepts arbitration?
Anybody know what he would likely get? If its likely less than what they just bought out, then its worth the risk to get the draft pick (I’m assuming Olivo is Type B). I don’t expect the catching next year (i.e. Buck is Buck, they won’t start Pena, nobody’s ready in the system, and the free agents aren’t that good) to be substantively better than Olivo, so, even if he accepts, then its just one more year of Olivo.
The other two don’t get arbitration. Crisp has to come back as a free agent if he’s coming back, and Yabuta is done in MLB.

I think there is a high risk he accepts arb
He had lots of shiny HR’s this year, and that is golden for arbitration raises. He was on $2.7m this year. So he’s looking at something approaching $4m at least I would guess.
He isn’t worth that. He might hope someone is dazzled by the power, but he might realize that he will earn more staying put and accepting Arbitration.

I've read that Olivo wants a multiyear deal, which the Royals don't want to give
I’d guess he’d be worth 4-4.5 in arbitration due to his HRs.
If they were sure he wouldn’t accept, it wouldn’t be a bad deal to offer arbitration. If he does find someone to give him a deal, I’d guess it’ll be in the range of a 2 / 6M deal.

Agreed
If it’s not less than the $3.3M, then it’s not worth the risk.

it'd be worth the risk at $6M
draft picks are worth it, and he definitely wants a multi-year deal. Don’t you think Mike Montgomery is a $5M dollar risk.
