Wagner Mateo?
Here is the saga on Wagner Mateo. It's interesting. Now it sounds as though the Giants aren't going to sign him. Why don't we take the money we saved on Mark Teahan through the trade (approx $2.5 mill) and throw some of it at him? Is he worth the risk? So far we've not been linked to him at all which makes this something that will probably not happen. But I'm curious to the consensus of RR.

the Giants and Cardinals both passed on this guy
degenerative eye condition for a hitter sounds pretty ominous—we could throw that money at the draft or other international free agents this coming year.
And wonder if he's a "great guy" off the field just like Kirby?

Yes they did.
Voiding a $3.5 million contract. With everyone passing on him, what if we gave him $1 million and waited to see what happened? I think it’s worth a gamble. If he advances quickly, we could get some good years out of him at the big league level if his eye disease didn’t advance super quick.
We took Hosmer and his eye problem.

I'm definitely interested
But as nwroyal said above, “degenerative eye condition” sounds pretty murky. I’m no doctor, but if this was as simple as lasik then i doubt two MLB teams would be passing on him. Can’t doubt the tools though.

Guaranteed millions to the highest risk kind of prospect, who is damaged goods to boot
I say pass. If a team were to take $2.5M in savings and invest it, I don’t think throwing it at one 16-year-old is a good idea (even if he didn’t have an eye problem). Better ways to invest that money include but are not limited to a) going over-slot in the draft, b) signing 5-10 Latin American teenagers for $250-500K each, c) hiring more good international scouts (preferably in under-searched Latin American countries).

The suggestion was to throw part of the 2.5 million at him.
For example, $1 mil and see what happens. No one else is offering ATM.

I'd offer him $500K plus a $100 gift certificate to Arthur Bryant's

Teahen has left us
before the Royal community learned to spell his name.
I’m not sure if investing this money in Mateo is right or wrong, but I do know we won’t be the team to do it.
Wagner Mateo is no AJ Ellis
Hoping that the Tigers fire Leyland and steal Trey Hillman from the Royals
I think the more interesting post on mlbtraderumors
was “Marlins decline option on Ross Gload”.

Depends on what the cost is
$100k? Go for it. $1-2 million? No way

100K?
Isn’t that less than the league minimum?
