A few guys on that list could be nice additions to our club...
We’ll have to wait until tomorrow I guess.

Is Conor Jackson over his Rocky Mountain Ebola Haunta Valley Fever Virus
or whatever crazy thing it was he contracted last year? Or is it like Baldelli’s mitochondrial disease, and it won’t be going away?
I question his outfield defense, but he sure had a good 2008. He’s the type of bounceback candidate the Royals need to take a chance on.

I think I read the D-Backs are keeping him
Could be posturing to try and get a trade for him though.

There are enough guys like Jackson
Ryan Church, Kelly Johnson, Luke Scott, etc. that should be available at a decent price and who would be an incredible improvement over Guillen in RF. Assuming the Royals continue to refuse to bit the bullet on releasing Guillen, I’d much rather see a trade for one of those guys to man RF (with MITCH in CF) than to see Dayton waste money on a 2-year deal for Scotty Pods.

Can they even afford ANYBODY on the list worth acquiring?
Seriously, when they come out and say they only have about 3m for 2 years budgeted for their STARTING centerfielder, you have to ask yourself, “Why bother?”. Anybody worth that little on the open market almost certainly won’t be any better than what they already have for $400k per year (Maier).

there are good candidates on the list;
let’s hope the Royals are overstating their financial pinch a bit, and/or that the sheer number of nontenders drives the price down enough where we can target and acquire the catcher and CF we need.
One thing that could favor the Royals – they can offer the right candidate a nearly guaranteed starting spot, rather than a bench role. Potential playing time might be a tiebreaker in our favor, if competing offers are similar.

John Buck is one of more valuable players who might actually be non-tendered
I understand why the Royals are non-tendering Buck, as he likely would get more in arbitration than he could on the open market. But among the seemingly dozens of available free agent catchers, Buck might be the best one. The Rays might be able to find someone to take Dioneer Navarro, but if he is non-tendered, he is the other catcher teams that makes sense for a rebuilding team.
The MLBTR list includes a lot of names of guys who not be non-tendered (many of the better ones like Hermida and Shoppach have already been traded to teams willing to pay them or who have already signed), but among the ones who conceivably could be cut loose, there are a few interesting ones.
We have talked about Ryan Church and Kelly Johnson, who probably make the most sense for the Royals. Gabe Gross is basically Church swapping out a little offense for a little more defense. Jack Cust is probably on the downside — three true outcome guys tend to fall off a cliff in their early to mid 30s — but might be useful on a one-year deal if the Royals have the sense to just tell Guillen to stay home this spring.
Ryan Garko is a generic, low upside stopgap 1B. He does just about everything a little below average (power, walks, defense, etc.). He is also right-handed, so he is even on the wrong side of a platoon. A team, however, may get lucky with Garko who at age 29 might put a peak year and reach 1.5-2.0 WAR. He certainly would make more sense than Guillen at DH (as would Marcus Thames but just barely).
Chad Gaudin is a decent backend starter or swingman — I would take him over Davies as a starter.
Jeremy Accardo has struggled the last couple of years with injuries and conistency, but he has the goods to be a decent reliever and is worth a major league deal. He probably draws a lot of interest if he is actually non-tendered.
Bill Bray is an interesting rehab case as a lefty reliever who can miss bats when healthy. Neal Cotts has some uses a generic lefty reliever.
Shawn Hill would be interesting as a rehab case on a minor league deal — he is not bad on the rare occasions when he is healthy.
Josh Towers, especially if he regains some of the groundballs he had as a younger starter, would be a decent starter to stash in Omaha and battle Campillo for the first callup. Tim Redding has no real upside but would be another depth guy.

Rany is right
non-tender Buck, but see if you can get him for cheap.
If the Royals sign Kendall, then Buck signs for less money elsewhere than Kendall or whomever signs here, well, that’s just stupid. He’s not really worth the Royals paying him what he’d earn in arb, but he’s probably better than all the remaining FA catchers out there except maybe Barajas.

great point,
and perhaps that is why Moore is waiting (we can hope?).
Maybe this even means he learned a lesson from past offseasons, when the general consensus’ was that he moved too quickly on FAs, resulting in overpayments.

Updated list
MLBTR’s updated list adds a few more interesting names. Gomes! Langerhans! Kevin Correia has been talked about too, although the Padres should be able to trade him.
If Andy Marte comes free, I would take a shot at him too. He is still only 26, his minor league numbers are good, and he obviously has talent (just maybe not what scouts thought a few years ago). He might be next year’s Felix Pie (or perhaps more accurately, Phil Nevin) — a former top prospect whose initial struggles in the majors overshadow the remaining talent to be a decent palyer, even if that is far below the original expectations for him. The Royals certainly have nothing to lose by giving him 250 ABs next year.
Nothing to lose?
What happens to Scott Thorman’s playing time?

Since FIorentino is gone
they should bring in Langerhans to play RF/CF, and Gomes to DH/5th OF if he’ll take the minimum. Haven’t looked at the list too much

You could put a competitive team together from the MLBTR list at bake sale prices
(of course some of the guys listed will be tendered)
1B Garko or Jackson
2B Johnson or Fontenot
3B Marte or Atkins
SS Amezaga
LF Church
CF Langerhans
RF Gross
OF Repko
C Buck or Navarro
DH Cust or Gomes
SP Bush, Correia, Maine, Gaudin, Tallet, Wang (DL)
RP Jenks, Accardo, Cotts, Carrasco, Medders
Shortstop and the end of the bullpen would be the sink holes, and the injury risk would high (since that is a common reason why they are on the list in the first place), but you put together the starting lineup for something like $20 million or less and a complete roster for maybe $30 million.
Atikins will sign a major-league deal with someone
Once you account for COL, he looks a lot like Mark Teahen — not good enough on defense to play 2B or 3B, not enough of a bat (or defense) to be average at 1B/LF/RF
Not a starter, but useful enough that someone will sign him for a bench/platoon role.
that’s my take, anyway
