d_f already posted this
but how exactly is he better than Buck/Olivo? Is it the .272 wOBA in 2007? Or the .293 in 2008? Or the .290 in 2009?

By that I mean
d_f already posted that Kendall was signed, although not as obvious as your post

Buck has a career OBP below .300
How can Buck be better than anyone? And he slugged .356 in 2008. He sucks.
Atleast Kendall was good once and not so long ago, for the Cubs in 2007 and the A’s in 2006

Because age matters
And age matters especially when you’re comparing a 29 year old with a 35 year old. Either Buck or Olivo is a better offensive player than Kendall. I think the only defensible position on this move is that Moore is cutting major league payroll so he can spend on draft/international signings.
And even with that, there was absolutely no reason for the second year. Just let BPJ catch this year. We have no chance of sniffing 4th place anyway.

Forgot to give credit
to Rany on the argument above.

We have to have 2 Catchers
I’m all for giving BPena a lot of starts, but you have to have another solid guy.
Buck was an above-average hitter last year
that’s above average, not above replacement. And that’s despite his OBP. Something to think about.
This space for rent.
Yeah but he slugged .365 in 2008 with more at bats.
He’s never been good. Either is Kendall. But to get pissed off about the Kendall deal seems like you are favoring Buck, which seems ridiculous
by GobbleforCyoung on Dec 11, 2009 9:08 PM EST up reply actions
Actually, I favor Pena
and as such, I don’t think who the other catcher is doesn’t matter.
You know, so long as we aren’t paying him $3M.
This space for rent.
Why does favoring Buck over a washed up Kendall seem ridiculous?
I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
yay?
My stories a lot like yours only more interesting because it involves robots!
Front runner for..
least favorite Royal of 2010….Jason Kendell. This is a terrible, terrible sign. DM couldn’t wait to see what players were non-tendered first? Had to set the market AGAIN (to be fair..I guess the Nats did with Ivan). I just don’t understand why you go from a below average catcher (Olivio, Buck..take your pick) to a well below average catcher (offensively..I have no idea about defense..but neither does DM given his other moves) that is declining further. Makes no sense. Anybody who thought this move was a good idea should be fired. FIRED I say. If I bother wasting my money to go to games, I WILL boo this guy every chance I get.
Don't hate on the guy because you don't like that he was signed...
Hate on the GM. I’m sure Kendall’s a great guy.

This move is worse than the Betancourt move.
At least Yuni isn’t 35. There is at least small amounts of hope he won’t be the worst player in the league. But, Kendall’s awful and likely to get worse if that’s possible.
Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

Totally correct.
In the Betancourt deal the Royals committed themselves to similar payments, plus they gave up two prospects with at least some value, for a guy who might even be worse at his position than Kendall is at his position.
No comparison between the two. Signing Kendall was stupid, but it’s the kind of stupid that many GMs do consistently. The Betancourt deal was almost unfathomably bad.

Buck/Olivo is far better than Kendall
Kendall’s last 3 years of wOBA – .272, .293, .290
Buck’s last 3 years of wOBA – .319, .292, .330
Olivo’s last 3 years of wOBA – .284, .313, .334
Kendall’s top year is essentially Buck’s worst year (.293 to .292), and Olivo had a really bad 2007 which was worse than everybody but Kendall’s worst year. Kendall did used to be a lot better, but he’s old and that’s not the case anymore.
Is this like Golf?

you are such a joke
You don’t have any grasp of right or wrong, especially with your extensive “law” background.
When someone “devil-fingers” decides he wants to be an “asshole” with the post above I’m going to defend myself. Too bad you don’t understand this. The instigator is wrong, the first offense is wrong. If someone pushes you or punches you go blow his head off with a shotgun I don’t care. Maybe you should reprimand the people starting trouble.

We have rules
People don’t have to play nice. People don’t have to be friendly. People can be snarky and criticize. What we don’t allow is for people to all other posters “assholes,” “shitheads,” etc. That takes things to a whole other level that we don’t allow. That is where we have drawn the line. “Instigating” (if you want to call it that) by making reference to an old post you once made is just fine. Calling him an “asshole” is not fine. That’s a pretty clear and obvious line. I don’t care if you agree with the distinction. I require that you follow the rules. If you don’t, you’ll be suspended (again). Now, I’m not interested in debating the rules with you. You know what they are. Stop bitching and follow them.

Well I learned in my torts class
that you can use only the amount of force reasonably required to protect yourself. By escalating, you actually become the instigator.
So there.

And let us be happy
that we will be paying 37 year old Jason Kendall $3.75MM (at least) in 2011.

I'm not yet convinced of this
And I wouldn’t totally rule out us having 8 second basemen next year.
