And by One-Track-Mind I mean that GMDM felt he NEEDED one trait in a player, and the rest of the player’s traits became essentially irrelevant. Player’s contract is not even a factor here: what this list cares about is how much the “whole player” was ignored to focus on one small detail.

This is awesome

Every time I hear someone talk about how the team needs a table setter, or an RBI man, I’m going to link to this. Thank you.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

lol... nice list.

We have LHPs in the pen and minors. No need for them here.

Still don't have

Speedy centerfielder. Wily Taveras, we’re coming for ya!

You could definitely add Coco for that.

He wasn’t a great OBP guy, terrible arm, mediocre stick. His skill was being a speedy centerfielder, wasn’t it?

I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

Gathright, too

Maybe even Anderson

those guys would be next on the list

except none have been quite as damaging as my top 5, although giving up Ram Ram was pretty harsh

6.

Scrappy, gritty fundamentally sound manager…

This space for rent.

that's a good one!

hadn’t thought about that, but in hindsight we may decide he was as much of a problem as any single player

9. Runelvys Hernandez

He is vicariously liable for that one. General principles, and all that.

(^Willie Bloomquist)

11. Someone to throw shit around in the clubhouse and generally make loud sounds and make the softies feel uncomfortable.

+10 will be taken care of Mike Moustakas

he’s already internalized the Royals rigorous regimens re: conditioning and plate discipine.

I would say Yuni is #1

GMDM love of him was 3 years in the making.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Dec 15, 2009 5:44 PM EST reply actions

i struggled with that

and for all the bad, bad, bad things about Yuni, he is actually a better hitter — and he has some chance of working out as a sort of reclamation project, whereas Kendall is old and getting older, with basically zero chance of returning to form (though I realize this is sort of like making a point out of 0.000001 > 0, but still, that’s what I went with).

on the other hand

what i didn’t take into account is that Kendall retires in two years (in all likelihood), but Yuni is around indefinitely (until GMDM gets fired, that is).

You’re runnin’ at a different speed.
Your offer grows to double time,
Another mil, and you’ll be mine,

Shouldn't that read

“Defensive SS Who Is NOT So Amazing at Defense”?

by AxDxMx on Dec 15, 2009 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

such an obvious omission

I think we’re pretty close to pinning down GMDM’s decision tree, starting with your addition:
1. Is he a former Brave? Yes, then sign/trade for him; No, then go to step 2.
2. Did he have a career year last year and is over 30? Yes, then sign….
