So It Seems

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Costa No!

I guess even the Padres did not want him, and he lost out on the Hanshin Tigers gig to Jeff Fiorentino.

The good news for him is that at this moment, he is the best option to start in rightfield (CHONE has him as an exactly league average hitter with plus defense). The bad news is that he will never get that shot.

by Gopherballs on Dec 16, 2009 11:47 AM EST reply actions

he needs to talk to his agent

at this point what he needs is a chance to a) make the major league minimum one more time and b) a chance to randomly hit well and earn three more chances

don’t see that happening with the royals

by Freneau on Dec 16, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions

He probably did

and the agent said that with missing almost all of last year with an injury, no one was willing to guarantee him a regular job in AAA, except the one that currently has Mitch Maier penciled in as a starting outfielder and only two outfield prospects in AAA.

Well, with JoGui's injury history

and him probably winning the job, he’ll never be cut out of spring training…

spring training invites come by horse-drawn messenger and are engraved

just like the wedding invitation from that guy’s ex in yesterday’s thread.

I think Bill Simmons or somebody did a bit on spring training invites a couple years ago and was sad to learn that there is no actual invitation, just maybe some language in the player contract.

So is it common-place for minor league guys to not get them

This is essentially saying there is virtually no hope we will call you up but we’d like more depth in AAA right?

by WURoyal on Dec 16, 2009 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

Most minor league guys already in the system do not get them

Just the top prospects, the guys closest to the majors, and, purely out of need, extra pitchers and catchers.

For free agents who sign minor league deals, it completely depends on the player. Guys who have played in the majors typically demand them, as they at least get the MLB salary, meal money, lodging, etc. during spring training. Same for the better minor league free agents — some will sign with a certain team just because they get the spring training invite even if they little hope of making the team. Some of the guys on minor league deals, however, do have a good chance of making the team, but it gives the team some flexibility in that (1) they do not have to clear a 40-man roster spot unless the player actually makes the team and (2) the team can send the player to the minors to start the year without having to expose him to waivers and risk losing him. A minor league free agent who last played in A ball, however, is likely to be assigned to the minor league camp.

by Gopherballs on Dec 16, 2009 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

Every year

At least 1-2 guys on minor league deals end up making the MLB club out of spring training, sometimes even more when you’re talking about the really lousy Royals teams.

Yay, and Boo

My irrational man-crush on Costa is well documented here on RR. I STILL think he will be a solid MLB’er some day, but I don’t see GMDM giving him a chance.

The CHONE prediction of .276/.333/.415 that Retro posted earlier is, IMHO, the bare minimum of the production that you’d get out of him for 500 +PA’s…which is, barring some miracle signing that doesn’t suck, probably our best option in RF at this point.

PLEASE GMDM, give Costa a CHANCE!!!

BOOM! ROASTED!

Is Lubanski still in the organization?

That’s the guy who deserves a shot over Costa IMHO, CHONE be damned.

by KCG816 on Dec 16, 2009 8:43 PM EST reply actions

No

And from what Greg Schaum has indicated they’ve pretty much told him they’re not bringing him back.

What is the downside...

…of giving Costa an invite to the major league camp?

Given that DeJesus is the only Royals outfielder who has shown he is (or in the case of one player in particular, STILL is) a legitimate MLB regular outfielder, what would it hurt to throw another player into the mix- especially one with MLB experience?

Could it be that More is destined to overpay for another below replacement level free agent this winter and he doesn’t want Costa to show him up in Surprise next spring?

Trust the Process.

Marlon Byrd
Ryan Langerhans
Gabe Gross
Ryan Church
Kelly Johnson
Eric Hinske can probably field the corners as well as Jason Bay
Rick Ankiel (easily the worst on this list so far)
Johnny Gomes
Austin Kearns
Jeremy Reed (ugh)
Randy Winn

how could you forget him?

I vote

Kelly Johnson (in RF). With a Rosa (?) for Gardner trade to play CF.

Not sure Johnson has the arm for RF

Although for LF he’s the best of the rest, given his age and stuff

I’ve got to stop listening to this SImmons/JackO podcast where they are trying to think of the upside on the Granderson trade… my ears are bleeding

I like

Marlon Byrd, and think he will be a nice addition somewhere. Would love him in RF for us, but that obviously won’t happen.
