Taking advantage of the market, Dayton-style
Dave Cameron has a post up at Fangraphs about the glut of second basemen available this year; it's like the market was last year for Ibañezesque outfielders. What a great opportunity for a small market, low-budget team to swoop in and lock up some talent at a bargain rate, right?
Of course Dayton was right on top of this wasn't he, jumping in early and scooping up the awesome Chris Getz? [/snark] One might almost think that, looking for a second baseman (without even getting into why he's doing so in the first place), he didn't bother to check out what the supply and demand situation for second baseman might be this winter. Else, why would he move on Getz when there other options? (I know, we shouldn't dismiss the notion that someone who thinks YuBet is awesome might think the same of Getz.)
Of course if his plan was to try to sell high on Callaspo as trade bait, he's now hawking Callaspo at the worst possible moment. Sheesh!

Yet
another pointless post talking about someone’s hatred of GMDM. Congratulations!
OR
yet another post talking accurately about the incompetency of GMDM. Congratulations!
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
Accidentally replied to wrong post......
i never said i liked GMDM, just saying that another post talking about is pretty much pointless. We all know how the majority of people feel. No need to rehash it every single day.

I believe there is benefit in articulating specific examples ...
… rather than just throwing up one’s hands and saying it’s bad.
I think it’s particularly useful when the discussion focuses on perceived problems with the decision-making process. Saying “the team stinks, get rid of Moore” really isn’t productive.
Fans are supposed to trust in The Process®. I think it’s totally appropriate to point out where and how that process might be flawed. With a bit of snark added for entertainment value.

OK...i do
appreciate your examples then. In the end, we are all wanting the same thing…….winning baseball back in KC.

I posted this at Fangraphs
But I really don’t think the 2B market is flooded at all. Dave lists three starting FA (and omits Adam Kennedy, which we’ll include). One – Placido Polanco – has already signed as a 3B. Three starting second baseman FA doesn’t strike me as “flooding the market.”
He also lists three 2B teams are looking to trade. We’ll include Callaspo, which he omits. Well two of those teams – the Mets and Mariners – don’t have replacements if they do trade those players. The Marlins would have Chris Coughlin I suppose if they feel he can handle 2B and the Royals would have Getz if they really believe in him. But the Mets and Ms would still need to acquire a 2B.
And the Twins, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Astros, and Giants all might be in the market for 2B.

I never
said i dsagreed just the fact that another post talking about it is tiresome.
What of other factors?
For instance, aren’t we supposed to be stockpiling young, affordable talent? Getz fits the bill exactly. His numbers aren’t yet impressive, but that’s because he put in only part of one whole season! His upside is excellent for a second baseman. No, he doesn’t have Callaspo’s bat. But Callaspo is a 3rd baseman/DH/OFer masquerading as a 2nd baseman anyway.
There are A LOT of reasons to not like some of GMDM’s acquisitions, but Getz isn’t one of them. – TL
I'm not much of a Getz fan
But I agree with you 100%.

Don't you have some glossy photos of Cliff Lee to caress?
[insert winky face here]
Getz (and Fields) was the return for a player, Teahen, the Royals were non-tendering and had posted a net WAR of 0.1 the last two years. Frankly, Moore was lucky to get anything for him, as the number of teams that are oblivious to the defensive metrics are dwindling. The Royals are not in a position to turn down young talent, even duplicative talent. Getz has an option left, so the Royals can stash him at AAA and wait for a better opportunity to trade him or Callaspo (assuming he stays at 2B).
Moore is a finalist for worst GM in baseball, but the Getz deal is not one of the reasons why.

Well, I would not go that far
It was a nice little move but minor nonetheless
And unlike Yuniesky Betancourt or Jose Guillen or Mike Jacobs
Getz does not cost so much that it prohibits us from acquiring someone else to compete with for the 2B job.

Getz is affordable but he isn't young ...
He’s 26 years old and is a smidgen above replacement level. There’s very little upside.
I don’t think he has any particular value beyond the fact that he’s making minimum salary. But the bigger issue, as discussed at the time of the deal, is ’What’s the point’? Where and how does he make the team better?
We’re supposed to trust in The Process® but it just looks like random, piecemeal moves.
At the time picking up Getz looked a puzzling, disconnected move. Layering this on top of the situation reinforces the perception that there isn’t a coherent process.
Don't look a gift horses in the mouth
He took a non-asset in Teahen and turned it into something potentially useful. It is more than the Braves got for better players like Kelly Johnson and Ryan Church.
Getz is a smidgen above replacement level only if you prematurely conclude that he is -5 defender, but he has, what, 900 innings in the majors. CHONE projects Getz as -7 runs offensively and +2 runs defensively playing about 1/3 of the time, which roughly projects to around 1.0 WAR player (excluding baserunning other than SB/CS). That is a mildly useful player even if he does not beat the projections. And he has a minor league option, so he can be stashed away if necessary.
The Royals also got Fields, a bench player at best “as is,” but an interesting gamble given his power, decent K/BB rates, and athleticism. He probably does not end up as the next Nelson Cruz or even Ryan Ludwick, but this is the type of player to whom the Royals should be giving opportunities.
I'm trying to remember...
how much upside people thought Brian Roberts had as he entered teh 2004 season at age 26, with 953 major league at-bats and a line of .258/.316/.348/.664 and 8 career major league home runs.

Have to agree on the Getz thing
He’s not a good hitter, probably between 5 (me) and -7/150 (CHONE). Defensively, he was ugly last season, in short playing time, but it’s a small sample of UZR. TotalZone projects him at +2. So at worst, he’s probably a 1.0 WAR player - Mark Teahen, with an outside chance of being around league average (2 WAR). 1.5 WAR seems fair. Getz for Teahen straight up would have been a win for the Royals.
Does this mean Moore isn’t a WGMIB finalist? Well, Omar Minaya managed to get HoF-evel talent Carlos Beltran at below market value, so, um…

Mariners
are looking for corner infielders and would be willing to part with Morrow. Should we swap AC(his best position is third) for Morrow?
Didn't they just sign Chone Figgins?

True
not sure why i forgot that…..they wouldn’t have much interest in AC then. Too bad cause i like Morrow.

i guess by
CI’s they probably are looking more for a 1B, but they could also re-sign Branyon.
by powder blues on Dec 18, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions
If they would have any interest in AC
then i would at least talk. Morrow has some injury concerns mainly due to Seattle moving him from starting to the pen and vice versa IMO. I would rather have Morrow as a a starter personally……worth the risk as he is only 25. If they want a guy like Gamel, as MLB trade rumors suggest, then they might be looking for a bigger name as far as prospects go.
I hope we're not trying to get Mat Gamel
We already have him on our team, except he plays under the name “Billy Butler.”

Seattle
was the one i was talking about having interest in Gamel.
