Greg Schaum tweets in response to the Pudge rumor:
Along the same line, I think Vanilla Ice is going to be a huge star, Ice Ice baby is the best….also, RUDY is the best movie ever

leave pagan in left if the cant sing holliday or bay

I know it’s just a typo, but it’s a great one given the season.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

I like it

If we sign him, bring back Juan Gonzalez and take a flyer on Roger Pavlik, we just may win the 1996 AL West.

Raffy Palmeiro, too

sweet lefty swing, tons of homers, GOld GLove winner at first. Tons of integrity.

If the Royals are going down that path,

lets at least get someone who has a chance at hitting 40 homers.

I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

Maybe sign Mark McGwire as our hitting coach?

I think a Pudge/Pena tandem would make some sense.

Non-tender Buck and I think that would be a serviceable (and cheap) unit for 2010.

Pudge used to be good defensively right?

It’s a mentoring situation for B Pena, and probably a chance to bring Wil Myers and other minor league catchers to ST and have them learn from one of the best.

Used to be good

I thought he had fallen off quite a bit but I could be wrong.

Yeah, he used to be great

now he’s around average. Rally has him at -2 in 2007, +3 in 2008. NO Rally numbers for 2009; “my” stat (probably about the same) has him at +2.

Even if you thikn slightly-above average catcher defense would be a bonus, well.. how much are you going to sign Pudge for? Among the guys with a lot of PAs the past few years (so the projections are reliable), he’s just about the worst hitter. Seriously. My prototype hitter projections have him as the second-worst projected guys with a minimum reliability score of .79 at -25 runs per 625 PAs. the only player worse on the list was Jason Kendall, at -26. That’s horrible even for a catcher.

Don’t trust my projection (who could blame you?)? Rally has him at -28.

Um, yeah, I’d rather have Pena and/or Buck any day, unless Pudge wis willing to take a minor league deal. There are tons of catcher who are better out there.

Yes, defense matters. You know what? So does offense.

Hire him as a coach!

Invite him to spring training, then let him know that we won’t be hanging onto 3 catchers but could really use his mind as a coach.

Doesn't he cost a draft pick as well?

that would concern me more than money.

He's a type B

So no.

Still a pointless thing to do.

Never mind

He’s Type B. I always forget that Type B FAs don’t lose you a draft pick.

I wasn't saying pick him up for his skills as a player

He should probably just retire. I’d much rather have him as a coach since he used to be great defensively and we have a few defense-challenged catchers in our organization.

by AxDxMx on Dec 3, 2009 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

I think Pudge would cost about 1.5 and play about 90 games.

Similar offensive production to last year and I’d take it in a heartbeat.

Greg Schaum thinks this has legs

And he doesn’t seem to be a fan of IRod. Seems to think IRod will clash with Trey.

Interesting

I think it’d be good for our pitching staff. If Pudge is our catcher for Zack, I guarantee at least one no-hitter this season. He’ll at least know how to handle the staff….

Oh, and our ERA will go down as we won’t give up over 1 base a game due to a poor backstop….

and our runs scored will also drop by 0.5 a game

I did not say that

I quoted what a 10 year major league veteran told me….

Not to be nit picky but that quote was not from me…and I clearly stated it that way

Still….I don’t thikn this would be a good signing at all

As regards Boras clients, Jon Heyman is a shill for Scott Boras

Heyman has sold his soul to Boras in exchange for getting “exclusive” info from Boras about his clients. Anything that Heyman says about a Boras client should be regarded as a direct quote from Boras and weighted accordingly.
