Royals Review Community Prospect List: #8
The last couple of polls have been blowouts. Tim Melville won the last poll easily with 52% of the vote. I think this vote is going to be a lot closer but we'll see.
As before, the choices are listed alphabetically and you can make your case in the comment section.
#1--Mike Montgomery--LHP--36%
#2--Mike Moustakas--3B--36%
#3--Aaron Crow--RHP--45%
#4--Eric Hosmer--1B--44%
#5--Will Myers--C--43%
#6--Dan Duffy--LHP--51%
#7--Tim Melville--RHP--52%

I went for David Lough
He’s proven to me that he is a legit OF in our organization. I like Noel a lot, and almost voted for him, but the improvement that Lough has showed since he went only to baseball. Sport specific training is now happening with him. And with his improvement, I can only look for more.

I voted for Lough
I wish I could have him higher, but I didn’t realize until just now that he’s a two-way player. What was his FIP last season? can he start, is or he more of a LOOGY?
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs.

FIP--2.12, 11.2 K/9, 1.6 BB/9, 52% GB rate
but the front office is keeping him an outfielder because he can’t field the bunt very well.
also muffs the 3-1

Don't forget the vital 3-6-1
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

You guys have completely underrated the 1-8-6-2.
It’s the play where the pitcher throws to second on the bunt attempt to try to start the double play, but misses the 2nd baseman with a very bad throw and it rolls completely to the wall while the CF chases it. Meanwhile the runners are furiously circling the bases and the CFer throws to the SS, and the SS throws to the catcher to try to get the bunter at the plate. The beginning of this play is known as the “John Bale”, IIRC.

I like Arguelles
But I can see an argument for any of the others. Cuban guys are hard to project. Could have a Livan Hernandez, could have a Rene Arocha.

Ditto
Except that I think Arguelles would be higher on our poll had it started after news of his signing. I’d put him in the top 5. But how could Cuban guys really be that hard to project when almost every one of them has made it to the MLs? I mean, not all have been great, but they’ve all made it right? Maybe I’m forgetting 1-2 Cuban flunkies? – TL
List of Cuban defectors
http://www.cubanball.com/defect.html
There should be a distinction between the high priced Cuban FAs – Rolando Arrojo, Livan Hernandez, and the guys that didn’t have a bidding war over them – Barbaro Canizares, Eddie Oropesa.
Notable high priced busts:
Osvaldo Fernandez
Adrian Hernandez
Alay Soyer
Ariel Prieto
Yoslan Herrera

I'd like to know more about the overall...
…history of Cuban defectors. I’m not trying to be contrarian when I ask: How many of those 5 you listed are still toiling in the minors but have no/zero/zilch hopes of being called up? And how many successes have there been? …Just thinking out loud. – TL
Oh I think most of the high priced guys have at least made it
I’d categorize them as such:
Met expectations:
Livan Hernandez
Orlando Hernandez
Jose Contreras
Danys Baez
Alexei Ramirez
Kendry Morales
Rolando Arrojo?
Did not meet expectations, but were serviceable
Rey Ordonez
Yuniesky Betancourt
Fail (all out of baseball)
Osvaldo Fernandez
Adrian Hernandez
Alay Soyer
Ariel Prieto
Yoslan Herrera – was recently released and could still sign somewhere
Vladimir Nunez
Jorge Toca

I keep coming back to Bianchi
he gives me hope for an important part of our future teams

I'm still waiting for Vance Wilson to be an option in one of these polls

Wow, no respect
Doesn’t Vance hold the minor league HR record? Or is that still Crash Davis?

Aren't there questions about his defense at SS?
I like him as I’ve seen him play a few times. I think he’ll stick, but I’ve heard questions about it.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
The questions are coming from third-party prospect analysts like BA and BP's Kevin Goldstein
He would rank higher if there was a consensus that he could stay at SS.
Can't you just leave me alone with my snark, please?!? :)
I was only half serious. They think Yuni can play SS, and that Mike Aviles couldn’t. I bet Bianchi falls into the Aviles mold.
Sorry
I usually only step on devil_fingers’ jokes. I think the snark still came shining through.
I just wanted to make the point that just about every non-Royals rooting prospect analyst questions whether Bianchi can stick at SS and this looked like a good spot to do so.

Yeah, no issue, I honestly don't know much about Bianchi
I just took the comments above as organizational worry, so your comments was actually helpful.
Voted for Arguelles
only based on potential which is what the rating of prospects is all about to me. If Bianchi and Arguelles both reach their ceilings in the major leagues, the Cuban will be more valuable as a starter than Bianchi will be as a SS or 2B. I like Bianchi but think Arguelles is a better prospect.
Yes
That was my reasoning too, although you stated it better.

I went with Bianchi...
I think he is probably the most big league ready player on the list and the one that has the biggest upside and far as the Royals go. The others not including Lough are a good two years away from sniffing the showers at Kaufman. At some point our prospects have to become players… if not it could be another bad decade for Royal fans.
Yep; Prospects Are
Not prospects if they never make the big team better for at least a few years.

I voted Lough
I HOPE he is only scraping his talent ceiling. Like others have said he wasn’t totally committed to playing baseball prior and he has progressed well since becoming a pro. I’m hoping his NW Arkansas power and play was just a sign of more and more to come.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
My concern for Lough is the Royals trait of poor plate discipline
As he progresses, Lough will have to be able to get on base at a higher rate. I don’t see him hitting for big power in ML so he’ll need to be effective at getting on base and scoring runs.
my concern for him is his unsustainable BABIP
which doesn’t make him all that unique on the royals prospect charts because most of the players who succeeded last year, like Bianchi, had high BABIPs.
