Royals looking at Brian Anderson
Per Ken Rosenthal on Twitter, the Royals are interested in the former White Sox prospect. He's similar to Maier but appears to be a slightly better fielder in CF and a marginally better hitter - though neither one hits for any power. Anderson is going into his age 27 season and could be a cheap CF option worth a gamble.

Whew.
I thought the subject meant that the Royals were looking to bring back Brian Anderson, who pitched for us in 2003-4.

I Am Relieved
At least I hope so, as the pitcher matched GMDM’s MO better than the CF.

P Brian Anderson would likely have a better OBP in 2010 than the one the Royals signed

This doesn't really make sense
From what I can tell, Maier is at least as good with the bat and has less Major League experience. Based on sample sizes, it’s hard to make a strong argument for Anderson being much better at defense either, especially in CF. Maier is also about 3 months younger. I’m not sure why we would want to acquire a right-handed version of Maier to play CF, when Moore is not really happy playing Maier in CF. That being said, who knows what Moore is thinking.
He is like Mitch but the subtle differences are important
I could see where they might put up very similar offensive numbers, but Anderson had an edge in UZR/150 in CF over a much larger sample than Mitch. It’s somewhat nebulous but I would guess that Anderson is better defensively. For a minor league contract (which is what is supposedly being discussed) it would clearly be worth doing.
I do see that actually
for me, it just comes back to… what’s the point?
why bring in a guy that’s maybe 15% better than Maier? I know every move can’t be a home run, but I’d rather have my extra outfielder/AAA depth guy be a little more interesting
but with a lack of depth at the higher levels being something we complain about
it seems like any move to bring in more depth with AAA/AAAA players is a good thing (my roundabout answer being that the point is more depth – and a guy who can just be cut if we find someone more interesting)

we just need to see the deal I guess
assuming there will even be one
its like when the royals brought in ponson… on the one hand, it was hard to critcize the deal, b/c the royals didn’t have a ton of options, on the other, it was ponson, who was exactly what he had been before… on top of that, his contract was setup to where it was extremely unlikely he wouldn’t be on the big league roster, as he would become a FA again if he was sent to the minors
but this new guy is better than the old guy, and i'm sure
the situation will be totally different, in a good way

He's also right handed
To Maier’s lefty bat. I don’t mind this at all. Anderson would be nice depth in Omaha if we needed him and could make the team as a nice bench bat.

I didn't realize it was a minor league deal
I would have no problem with that

if it's a major league contract (which it won't be)
i’d give up. it would be a new stroke of incompetence. we would have DFA’d a guy we could have kept at league minimum and then chosen to sign him back as a free agent.

meh
I agree that it’s a cheap pickup but I don’t see this as really advancing the cause. better than trading for Ryan Freel I suppose. See, Dayton is learning!!!1111oneoneone

Why is it~
EVERYTIME I read royalsreview I keep getting the image of a girl in a prom dress stood up at the dance!>?
What do LAWYERS and SPERM have in common?
One in TEN MILLION make a HUMAN!
GMDM should work for Sprint
He has a corporate mentality. A hack cough cough “consultant” from out of town that costs 3x as much MUST be better than your own guy…who you will have to lay off to cut costs after spending all your money on consultants.
I like this
Isn’t Anderson faster than Maier? Since talks for Gardner/Pie/Pagan don’t seem to be going anywhere (doesn’t any of those three want Meche?), I thought Anderson was where they should turn. Maybe they sign both him and Jeremy Reed for backup/competition (though Reed just looks like he sucks)? Whatever they do, I just hope they don’t sign Podsednik, who seems too old and slow to man the K’s spacious center field.
(Sorry, I just saw the whole post on Podsednik.)
The other thing about Podsednik: I keep hearing Hawk’s voice saying “Scotty Pods,” and that makes we want to die.
Reed Was Never
Any good, even in the ABL.

Good deal for us
If it’s just a MiLB deal and not an MLB deal. RR says he doesn’t like a move that makes us just 15% better. I disagree with you up there. If we continue to improve our team by 15% every couple of years, suddenly we are 30% better, 45% better….. and then this isn’t a 60-102 type of team. Maybe we are 82-82. That’s a start. At least we’ll begin to be in contention.
This deal makes us better, then do it. Especially if it makes us better in the higher levels as well. We aren’t exactly loaded in the upper levels.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
I agree, but RR
was claiming that Anderson is merely 15% better than Maier… not an overall improvement of 15%
Still an improvement is an improvement.
Especially if it’s a minor league deal at the same price. Right? Wrong? Makes sense to me.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
"An improvement is an improvement"
Technically, Betancourt was an “improvement” at SS over TPJ.
Be careful what you wish for in the Dayton Moore Era.

Minor league deal allows me to root for it in this case, right?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
At this point
I would like to see them just go with Maier (and Ka’aihue). They won’t be great, but they won’t be terrible and they are affordable. Don’t buy another contract that is overpaid. Kendall’s contract isn’t good, but at least it isn’t as bad as Farnsworth’s.
Clear off Guillen’s and Farnsworth’s salary after this year. Shoot for one real difference maker in free agency next year, and start bringing up some of the young guys in the minors.
On a minor league deal, sure why not?
As mentioned above, if it is just a minor league deal, Anderson is fine. He is basically a right-handed Josh Anderson with more refined defensive skills and a former top prospect pedigree. 2010 will be his age 28 season, so maybe the Royals will get lucky and he finds some untapped reserve of power or contact hitting skills. If not, he can keep Costa company at the Omaha Applebees.
Annnnnd, it's official

MAJOR league deal…but it’s least it’s not a TWO-year major league deal. You have to look very hard to find a bright side in the Dayton Moore Era. And even then, the bright side is not that bright.

I dunno, depends on the money
I don’t see anything horrible to this deal. Yeah, he’s not great, but I suspect this will be, at most, a few hundred thousand, right? So, at most, a couple hundred thousand more than the league minimum.
I’m sure we’d all rather have something more fun to play with like Ryan Church. But, let’s be honest, we all know that’s not where GMDM was going.
I know, deep down, I think the reason I’m ok with this is because it’s not a stupid amount of money for Scott Podsednik.

Yeah, I don't mind a major league deal if the money is right
I wouldn’t really have a problem with a $600K MLB contract.

Have we gotten to the point where we can say Dayton likes
former Braves, Mariners, and White Sox now?
