OT: Holiday questionaire....

I am setting here with my Christmas Eve scotch and water in hand.  I have spent the day cooking, cleaning, and finishing the wrapping of presents.  Christmas day two of my children and their families will descend on my home and the fun and craziness will start.  I am going to spend tonight with a BLT and christmas cookies...oh ya, and scotch.  I will be watching "The Natural" and then turn in early.  We old men need our sleep...right Buddyball.  So, what is the RR crew doing tonight and for the next 10 days.

1. What are you doing for Christmas?

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21?

Star-divide

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?

4. Any plans for New Year's Eve yet?

5.  Which bowl game is a can't miss for you?

6.  Best food to have during a bowl game?

7.  Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose?

Have a safe and happy holiday season to all on Royals Review. especially to our fearless leader.  Santa, if you are still taking Christmas wishes...  I wish for a 88 win season for the Royals in 2010.  And, if you aren't too buzy an 82" big screen TV would be good too.  A guy has to dream at this time of year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

I'll start...

1. What are you doing for Christmas?
My daughters are bringing everything except the ham. I am doing that… very, very slowly.

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21?
My set of Lincoln logs… I think I still have them somewhere

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?
My kids went together and bought me a 52" TV last Christmas. It is amazing.

4. Any plans for New Year’s Eve yet?
The neighbors and a few friends are dropping by to ring it in with me. 80% of the population of the Spur will be here.

5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you?
Iowa State vs Minnesota and Iowa vs GT… I am also interested in Northwestern vs Auburn. I would love to see the Cats kick Chizek’s ass.

6. Best food to have during a bowl game?
Chili and a table overflowing with all kinds of munchies… lots of adult beverages too.

7. Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose?
Ham it is in our house… but, all three sound good right now (as he reaches for yet another Christmas cookie)

a TURDUCKEN?????

I have no idea what that is. I even goggled it and still have no idea what that is. Do you dance around it naked? Is it eaten with chopsticks? What????

by grudz96 on Dec 25, 2009 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

its a turkey, with a chichen inside it, with a duck inside the chicken

they are usually bad unless professionaly made (hard to have that much meat turn out well)

by Will McDonald on Dec 25, 2009 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

Okay.... that sounds great.

I have a duck and a turkey in the freezer so all I need is a larger chicken. I think I can do this. You would probably use the baking instructions for the turkey and you would want to drain the fat off mid bake. Ducks have a lot of fat. I think I can do this. This might be a good thing for the Super Bowl party I am giving. I would probably make an orange sauce for dipping and gravy. I need to sleep on this one.

thank you...

I am not sure about the boneing of the whole thing. I might try this anyway. My turkey is a 20 pounder and the duck weighs in at about 6. It is a wild duck so that throws another strange item into the recipe. This sounds good though and something completely different than anyone would expect.

by grudz96 on Dec 25, 2009 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

Just throw it all in the fryer at once

PROBLEM SOLVED.

And by the way…

My little brother is a Chef

so he gets to make it, he said its a complete pain in the ass, takes several hours to prepare and takes longer to cook than a turkey.

1. What are you doing for Christmas?
We are taking my mother-in-law over to my parents’ house where we will be joined by many extended family members (weather permitting). We’re bringing the green bean-related dish. We’ll be eating the fudge.

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21?
Cabbage Patch Doll. Her name was Gwendolyn Anne and I loved her very very VERY much.

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?
My Royals Santa hat, of course. (Got it last year from my dad, with matching Royals Christmas Stocking. My husband got a matching set, but he never wears his hat. Wimp. Honestly though, it’s the warmest hat I own.)

4. Any plans for New Year’s Eve yet?
Was invited to Zombie New Year’s Eve, but since it is in Akron and I am in Kansas City, I don’t think I’ll make it.

5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you?

2. I got an Apple II GS computer when I was 6. At the time, I was the man.

3. This year, my nephew and niece bought me a Tassimo coffee maker. It uses disks (like ranch containers at burger king) to make coffe, cappucino, expresso, etc.

4. I know we’ll be drinking somewhere. Probably at my favorite rock bar.

5. Missouri vs. Navy and I can’t wait to watch KU in their bowl. Oh, wait…..

6. Hot wings, pizza, barbeque beef

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

Just to clarify for the KU grads

KU is not in a bowl this year. Todd Reesing, in his senior year, could not beat Missouri and push his team into the postseason. A sad ending for a very sad quarterback.

i don't understand animals...

a turkey and a goose appear to be basically 90% the exact same animal, and the goose I had tasted like roast beef

by Will McDonald on Dec 25, 2009 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

Most geese are heavier muscled than turkeys.

The turkey breeds we have now are usually bred for there breast meat only. That why a goose (cooked properly) tastes like beef. My grandmother use to say that goose fat was great for burns. Go figure….

1. What are you doing for Christmas?

first christmas with my wife’s family

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21?

my dad somehow delivered a play-house to my backyard one year… amazing… of course, it quickly got colonized by wasps (believe it was wooden) and I was usually afraid to go in it

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?

just being alive

5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you?

i like the obscure bowls that most people hate and bitch about

6. Best food to have during a bowl game?

buffalo wings, boneless

7. Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose?

my family usually did bbq or tamales on christmas

by Will McDonald on Dec 25, 2009 12:18 AM EST reply actions

my playhouse was a tree house that my brother and I built.

My answers

1. What are you doing for Christmas? I had to work tonight (am a part-time student associate pastor at a local church), so I’m not going to fly to KC to visit family until January. But several of my other seminary friends are getting together for a big potluck dinner and gift exchange in the evening, and I am happily looking forward to that! (Thought I’ll be spending much of the afternoon cooking for it…)

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21? My Nintendo 64, Christmas 1998. No question.

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?

4. Any plans for New Year’s Eve yet? My mother and sister will be in town, so I’ll be celebrating somewhere with them. Not sure where yet.

5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you? The Fiesta Bowl. My boss (the senior pastor) is a rabid TCU alum, and the outcome of the game will go a long way in determining his mood that week. :) Otherwise, I don’t really care this year…the Jayhawks aren’t going bowling, and the Cal Golden Bears just lost to Utah. Bleh.

6. Best food to have during a bowl game? Pizza and beer. Nothing else can come close.

7. Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose? I prefer ham, but have probably had turkey the most often.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 25, 2009 1:16 AM EST reply actions

oops, forgot to answer #3....

Best present received between ages of 21-65: The new laptop computer I have now was/is an early Christmas present from my parents. It is pretty sweet so far.

My Answers

1. What are you doing for Christmas? Working. I work overseas as a contractor where Christmas is just another work day:(
2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21? I think her name was Julie (she was over 18).
3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65? Have to go with my wife since she might read this post.
4. Any plans for New Year’s Eve yet? Work (see answer #1)
5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you? Texas-Alabama and Boise State-TCU
6. Best food to have during a bowl game? Chili
7. Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose? Ham and Turkey tie for #1
8. When will the Royals next make the playoffs: 2012 (Will be close in 2011, but come up just short).

merry christmas!

1. What are you doing for Christmas? just spending it with the family…tried to get a family mexico cruise going for this christmas but no luck.

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21?
A lot get melded together because of the relatively close date between my bday and xmas…a month….that its hard to remember every distinct present, but I remember my skateboard was a pretty big one. Never really got good at skating but I loved doing it for awhile.

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?
Well, seeing as this is only my second go around in this category, I will have to go with the holiday 5 pack of firestone DBA my Dad got me last year. Just provided a good Christmas morning laugh…and eventually buzz.
4. Any plans for New Year’s Eve yet?

5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you?
As a UCLA student, I have to go with the UCLA-Temple game, Coach Rick’s first bowl game, and a big sendoff for a lot of pretty good defenders. Wish it wasn’t in DC or I might have been able to go.

6. Best food to have during a bowl game?
You can’t go wrong with a plate of chili cheese nachos with all the fixins made by the girlfriend. Although if you brought me a plate of buffalo wings or chicken tenders, I probably couldn’t say no. I assume the beer is a given.

7. Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose?
Probably none. I’ve always been kinda miffed about having a nice turkey dinner on Christmas only a month after Thanksgiving. We usually have a bit of turkey and ham but the concept of the meal is the same. Never done Goose though. I’ve always wanted to do untraditional things but I can never get anyone to go along. Like the aforementioned lasagna, or maybe burritos or even pizza would be solid. I’ll do the traditional dinner if its part of a larger family gathering, but if its just the immediate family i’d be just as happy having Mexican food and margaritas.

I need to add one question…

8.Favorite Christmas tradition?

Gotta be the constant reruns of A Christmas Story….by the time its over, me and my dad have usually knocked out three full viewings along with several more partial viewings. Great movie. Never gets old.

3. Best Present ages 21-65? My eldest son, a Christmas baby (by accident, 3 weeks early).

4. Any plans for New Years Eve? Drinking, probably.

5. Best Bowl game? College football doesn’t really happen in Canada, but i’m a Mizzou Alum so i look out for that. Texas bowl it is.

I believe we call it

a “shersey”.

1. What are you doing for Christmas? Going to my parents (me and my wife are Jewish, so best of both worlds) if we can navigate the 2 feet of snow in KC.

2. Best Present under 21? One year I got a 12" black and white TV, I’m guessing I was 10 or so.

3. Best Present ages 21-65? The first Christmas after I got divorced from my first wife, I was pretty down, and my mom and stepdad went all out and bought me a new stereo, this table that had a mini-casino inside of it (roulette, craps, blackjack) and some furniture. I never use any of the stuff, it truly was the thought.

4. Any plans for New Years Eve? My wife and I are going out to an early dinner and that’s it.

5. Best Bowl game? I really hate to say this but I hardly know who’s playing who this year. I actually think the Mizzou-Navy game will be pretty good, and I’m looking forward to the alleged national championship game.

6. Best bowl game food? Lots of salt, meat, sauce, cheese, and sweets. Little smokies, chips and cheese, chili, mexican, basically anything that makes you shit your brains out the next day.

7.Ham, Turkey ot Goose? Turkey for sure. I do eat ham, but don’t like it as much. Never had goose. I am a self-admitted food neanderthal, I really won’t try new things. I guess if the goose tastes like beef, why not just eat beef? I would have trouble processing the fact that I’m eating what looks like a bird but tastes like a cow.

Here’s hoping that the Royals make some huge strides this year and things truly start to turn around.

Here’s to a better 2010 for us as Americans, and that the lessons of the past 10 years cause us as a society to change some bad habits and start focusing on what really matters.

Here’s hoping that religion starts to be something that brings us all together instead of something that separates us.

1. What are you doing for Christmas? Staying home with family. Looking at the 10 inches of snow that fell. Shoveling the driveway (up to 4 foot drifts).

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21? Hard to remember that long ago. I do remember getting a bb gun.

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65? Our daughters got us a 26" HDTV this year, and a new VCR/DVD player. Our younger daughter claimed that our old VCR was older than she was (and she is right). Now we can play either format without having to switch cables! What a concept!

Post-Christmas report

Lost the fight, but did not need medical treatment. Heard from Mom – Uncle Joe got arrested again down in Coffeyville, so she had to wire some money to Aunt Tanqueray. Dad’s out, so we hung out at the trailer. Smoked some K-weed. Had some of those weenies out of a can. Watched some Girls Gone Wild videos. The sheriff came by, but he can’t prove jack shit, so that’s that.

I've Driven Through

There several times, but I never stopped there. We stopped there for the night on one of my family’s trips to Fort Worth to visit my brother. That was as far as we got the first day of the trip; my father usually drove on dirt roads. Anyway, we were sitting at a closed gas station somewhere around Coffeyville, drinking cider and getting ready to get some sleep.

Some hillbilly who lived in back of the place came wandering out to our ‘53 Pontiac Super Chief and asked if the bugs were bothering us. He then proceeded to spray Raid in the car. I don’t think he did it to be mean; he was just stupid.

that they shot it out with the Daltons in 1898. Final score: Daltons 4, Citizens 4. Eight people unnecessarily dead, since the Daltons, like the Wild Bunch, weren’t psychos and didn’t shoot people if they didn’t have to. I would have said let them rob the damn banks, it ain’t my job to shoot robbers, and the law will get them sooner or later anyway.

That Whole Corner

Of the state has been under water damn near every time I’ve been through there. I think that’s the natural state of most of eastern Kansas and everything east to the Mississippi. All the reservoirs keep it mostly under control, but no one cares enough about southeast Kansas to protect it.

Well I missed this! But I know you were all waiting for my answers

1. What are you doing for Christmas?

Spent it at my mom and dad’s. Christmas is like 1000x more fun when you have a kid. My son LOVED his train set and played with it all day. Then we rocked out with Guitar Hero, a gift my cousins got from Santa. And there was fudge involved. Good times.

2. What was the best Christmas present you received under the age of 21?

Catcher’s glove, no doubt. I was just getting into baseball and I thought catchers were so cool because they got special equipment and special gloves. Plus it was my first real glove – I had been using my dad’s old glove when I was in the field, and the team’s catcher’s glove when I was behind the plate.

3. What was the best present you received between the ages of 21 and 65?

My wife got me a Wii last year. She is awesome. Unfortunately I had to sell it a few months later because I just never had time to play it.

4. Any plans for New Year’s Eve yet?

Nope, staying in.

5. Which bowl game is a can’t miss for you?

None. Don’t get into the bowl season. Will be watching the NFL Playoffs and college hoops.

6. Best food to have during a bowl game?

Pizza is the best to eat watching football.

7. Christmas Ham, Turkey, or Goose?
