Feliz Navidad and Bon Nadal, everybody.

Yep, Nadal is Catalan for Christmas, which means the famous tennis player is named Rafael Christmas in English.

    It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.

The Ankiel post at McCovey Chronicles:

For Christmas me wants an outfielder. And a pony. And a rocketship.

    I know how he feels.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

    Ankiel

I wonder if people actually think he’s good? Two good seasons with the bat, one terrible season, and he’s 30. Oh, and he’s about as much of a center fielder as Nick Swisher.

    d-f is right........he's not good

Pretty much had lost his job in STL at a point last year. As long as you don’t throw him fastballs, you’ve got an excellent chance to get him out.

Sounds like he'd fit right in.

    Got to agree

He’s better than most of our team. Are we Royals fans really saying someone is terrible? Have you looked at our roster? This team would have trouble in the International League. Ankiel would be very welcome by me.

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

Ricky would rank probably #2 in our present outfield.

Besides Maier and DeJesus he probably has the 3rd best defense in CF. He can hit homeruns and knowing Trey’s managerial style we could see him come into pitch in the 8th inning some games. Sign him up Dayton…Trey needs him …plus he is a born again… right up our alley…

I'm not even sure how much better Ankiel is than Maier

he’s a better hitter, sure, but he’s not much of a defender. Maier is probably average in center field. Ankiel is above average… in left field.

Again, I’d take Ryan Langerhans (already signed), Ryan Church, or Gabe Gross over Rick Ankiel. Kelly Johnson, too.

You want damning? Bill James projections has Ankiel as a league average hitter next season. That pretty much says it all.

at least he'd be a different kind of player

part of what frustrates me is how moore hordes identical position players

leaving ST with some kind of weird Mitch/Ankiel/Anderson mix would at leave give you some options… i mean, yea, it’s all gonna be ultimately pointless, but at least it’d be more interesting

by Freneau on Dec 28, 2009 2:05 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure how Ankiel would be different

maybe he’d combine the overrated defense of Josh Anderson with the offensive prowess of Mike Jacobs?

At least he’s hit his Moorean prime, as he’ll be 30 next season

    League average hitter?

That’s a huge upgrade for this team. Are we forgetting how horrid this offense was last year? A hitter with Ankiel’s power is what this team is lacking.

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

    Mike Jacobs is available.

    Jacobs career: 254/313/476, 335 wOBA, 7.9% BB%, 25.1% K%

    Ankiel career: 251/311/452, 327 wOBA, 7.7% BB%, 25.8% K%

I take it you aren't familiar with the Bill James

    projections modus operandii?

They are almost always optimistic, especially for “power hitters” a la Ankiel. Having him league average, then, is really damning.
