1. Batting Average – You need to hit the ball – ‘Amos Otis won a game for the Royals for the Royals Tuesday night by doing nothing more than the 34,913 fans who paid to watch the contest.’
2. Listen on radio while working in garage on a project (drinking beer, car, restoring furniture, drinking beer, etc)
3. KC Monarchs hat from the NLBM – wearing it right now
4. Royals, K-State Football, Arizona Football, K-State basketball, my ultimate frisbee team, Chefs
5. 1975 Ford Mustang II — first car and the biggest POS I ever owned. At least dropped 10X what I paid for it in the first year after I got. I had to met a Camaro to go with my mullet.
6. GNR – Use Your Illusion I and II
Jeff Zimmerman - Protecting the world from RBI's and Wins from my mom's guest house.
dumb question, but I can't remember...
did the two parts to Use Your Illusion come out at the same time?
pretty much, they may have been a month apart

Absoluletly sure
My roommate proceeded to listen to both parts every day for about 4 months after that.

1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
Either HRs or ERA.
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
nationals park is growing on me… I also really love listening to a game on the radio when I’m driving at night somewhere.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
I am a huge baseball cap appreciator. Every time I’m in a sports good store or team shop, I always spend forever gazing at the official caps wall. I love so many of the designs. From a pure visual standpoint, I don’t know if I can isolate just one. I don’t really go in for most uniforms anymore, but caps… Is anyone else like this?
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
Royals making a WS run would probably greatly benefit this site and would be incredibly fun. Still, it would probably be second to Notre Dame winning a national championship in football or basketball. My wife and I went to school there, met there, etc. so there’s just more of a direct personal connection, even if its also basically fake.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Not sure if this should count, but a few years ago, when I was really broke, I signed up for one of those “services” that was supposed to connect me with online working from home jobs. It was only like $20 bucks I think, but it was still completely horrible to do that.
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
Probably War by U2, although I was listening to Achtung Baby and Pop constantly as well. War was what got me into them, so that album probably has the overall lead.
I wonder now if these crazy kids today still listen to albums, by which I mean, a CD start to finish. Not to get too “Record Store Guy” but its a different experience than having your ipod on shuffle.
I wonder now if these crazy kids today still listen to albums, by which I mean, a CD start to finish. Not to get too "Record Store Guy" but its a different experience than having your ipod on shuffle.
I do. When I download something from itunes, it’s almost always the full album. I’m also an old man compared to the musical tastes of kids right now…
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

I agree with most
1. I still love to see big home runs. and ERA always catches my eye
2. Dell diamond in austin, home of the Round Rock Express
3. Texas rangers alternate road cap. with a white t and Black Bill. I love Baseball Caps. but only MLB authentic caps. i love the way they fit my head, and i have about 50 of them but every year i get a new rangers one.
4. um. well im not primarily a royals fan so idk.
5 I bought a a jersey of a minor league team that i thought had kick ass uniforms. the next year my team changed affilitations
6. well i’m only 17 so this might change. but either Bloc Party’s Silent Alarm or Crystal castles
Fresh since 1822
Good questions
1. Batting Average- Simple to explain and allows me to talk about how good George Brett was.
2. Sports Bar- I love sitting there and watching games in that atmosphere.
3. Royals authentic blue cap
4. The #1 dream is being at the K for a WS clincher. It’s why I’m a season ticket guy now, someday people will be lined up for those tickets.
5. How thte hell can I narrow that down? Right now, maybe my laptop. It’s a great machine and runs great, even at 5 years old. But I bought a tablet PC because it was so cool and spent an extra $800 over a similar machine that wasn’t a tablet.
6. Metallica- Black album
5.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Now it's time to party
1. Batting average – Like other people said, it’s an important skill, and essentially the most basic and identiable skill as a hitter.
2. No clue.
3. I don’t care for baseball caps. I have too much hair to wear one.
4. I think it’d be tied with seeing the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl. Those are the two teams closest to my heart. I’ve been fortunate in some sports, such as Jimmie Johnson winning 4 championships in a row, but never seen anything good from my two favorite teams.
5. I don’t purchase many things at all. I’ll have to think about it.
6. Rolling Stones – Let it Bleed. Amazing album.
Always curious
How do NASCAR fans latch onto a driver? With team sports, it tends to be a regional thing – I root for the Royals because I’m from KC. But most individual sports – tennis, golf – I don’t really have a guy I root for. But NASCAR fans seem very loyal to drivers. I find it interesting.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Well
My mom bought a Jeff Gordon shirt for me when I was but a wee lad. Had no idea who he was, other than he drove race cars. So my attachment to Jeff started there. And then Jimmie Johnson came up and is Jeff’s teammate, so that’s how I became a fan of him.
I don’t know. It happened by mere accident for me. I suppose the personality of the driver may have quite a bit to do with it.
I have a ton of friends into Racing - accually lost a good friend racing in Iowa this year.
I have taken a few laps and it is fun as shit. Driving as fast as your can, playing bumper cars, not having to really be in shape, especially for short races.
I know a ton that are Clint Bowyer fans because because they raced against him before he made it in NASCAR.
Also there are a few Jeff Gordon fans because when he was younger he raced in the Midget Nationals in Belleville KS and they followed him since then.
Finally and probably most common is because some family member or friend is a fan. My daughter is a Royals fan and she is 3. Need to start them young

1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
ERA. I don’t know why I still use it for relievers where its less useful than with starters.
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
My favorite ballpark was whatever they call the Giants home ballpark now.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
Its a worn-out fitted Royals cap that is on its last legs. The only other cap I wear is a nice Cubs fitted cap I picked up in Chicago a few years ago.
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
#1. #2 on my list has been fulfilled – Jayhawks won it all in 2008. Chiefs Super Bowl is third. Then probably USA winning a World Cup.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Not the dumbest, but the most recent – I just bought an entertainment console that doesn’t fit in our TV room. Grrrrr.
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
Either Led Zeppelin’s “Physical Graffiti” or Beastie Boys “Licensed to Ill”. I listened to a ton of 311 too, and I absolutely hate them now.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
I have about the same order
For some reason, I am the unlikely fan of MU football and KU basketball, KU by birth and MU by Brad Smith. So maybe MU football gets in there, but I think 2007 was their chance. US winning a World Cup would draw collective sighs from the US, but would be an unreal experience at soccer bars. I love soccer fans, probably more than any other sports fans, just for the passion.

My wife and I just moved to San Francisco
We toured the Giants ballpark and it is awesome. It also didn’t use any public money to fund its construction, which I was surprised by especially given its location
Fun.
1. Another one for batting average.
2. Wrigley is beyond cool.
3. Those Green Royals St Paddy’s Day hats.
4. ONE!
5. I bought a Coke with an overdrawn account. It cost me 31.50!
6. Corrosion of Conformity’s “Wiseblood”. Still their best record and the album that earned them the dubious distinction of being the band that influenced Metallica’s “Load” and “Re-Load” era.

I love Arms of God.
I agree it’s way behind Wiseblood.
I liked Nola, didn’t like Bustle, thought the third record was all right on the Down front. It bothers me that Pepper Keenan is in a band where he doesn’t sing. What an amazing songwriter.
Are you into Fu Manchu?
I'm not much for COC (saw them with Metallica in '97)
but I loved Fu Manchu in college and am still a bit of a fan. I have all their old stuff (even from before The Action is Go). Love them.
Old Fu = Awesome
Nu Fu = Tired.
Not a COC fan? Have you heard their records?
I had the one with Clean my Wounds
That song kicked ass, but I was more into alternative music at that point like Smashing Pumpkins. The rest of the album was kind of boring for me at the time. Maybe I’ll check out some of their stuff.
Deliverance
Far and away their most popular, that’s actually my least favorite COC record. Wiseblood and Arms of God are both worth your time.
I'm glad you asked.
1. ERA. Pretty flawed but a 5.65 ERA is never good.
2. On the radio when driving at night on the interstate (stole from RR). You really can’t beat that, no matter what teams are playing.
3. Old school blue Mariners cap with a yellow trident on it.
4. Notre Dame football, then Chiefs, then Royals.
5. My house. Don’t buy a house unless you have absolutely must do so!
6. REM – Automatic for the People. I considered it the highest artistic achievement in the history of mankind. I was young.

1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
probably HR or just Hits… which is essentially batting average. I think 200 hits in a season is still a cool benchmark.
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
HDTV… not that I own one, but several friends do. After that, I really liked the Ballpark at Arlington the one time I visited.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
Haven’t worn caps since I was 10 yrs old, but I’d have to say I like the look of old worn out caps where the bill is bent just the right way and there is just the right amount of grime on it.
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities?
Royals WS and then the only other thing that really matters to me is another KU Basketball championship — I had the please of being in Lawrence in 2008 for that celebration (I was visiting for Royals Opening Day) and that was probably one of the best weeks of my adult life so far.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Maybe not the dumbest thing ever, but the most annoying thing I’ve ever purchased was espnINSIDER. Gosh, I hated the stupid magazines that kept coming and I didn’t feel all that “inside” by reading the special content on the website. Kind of a waste… especially since i did the $6.95/mo thing.
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
One of The Getup Kids albums — either 4 Minute Mile or Something to Write Home About. I still like those albums but am more aware of being labeled “emo”.

1: ERA- It is still a fairly decent easy to understand rough and very guide of performance.
2: Foothills stadium, Calgary. Falling down, old school minor league park. Love those types.
3: Just the regular old blue one. I don’t think Power blue works on the caps.
4: Number one, just ahead of the Flames
5: Before I started college, I laid out for a really expensive pen, like $90. I broke the nib within a week, and it was crap anyway.

Here goes...
1. HBP – I don’t care how many fancy-pants equations you can come up with…taking one for the team never goes out of style. (Actually, probably RBI…when I was a kid, I thought it was about the best way to see who the most productive players were.)
2. I haven’t had the chance to visit many MLB ballparks, but I thought the whole experience at Camden Yards was great.
3. I have a gray Royals “The Franchise” cap. I don’t wear hats that often, but it fits perfectly and gray goes with just about everything. Love the fit and look of all “The Franchise” caps.
4. Royals/Chiefs championships are pretty much equal #1. As a personal sports priority, I would love to experience a live UFC event, preferably with Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, or Lyoto Machida on the card.
5. My legal education. Not necessarily that I got it, but that I went to the school that I did and paid (i.e. borrowed) so much money to get it. Should have gone somewhere much cheaper.
6. It’s hard to look back and narrow down the one I spent the most time listening to. I guess maybe “Doggystyle” by Snoop.

it stands out to me how often I hear this, regarding law school, but I don’t really remember people telling me the same thing when I was considering law school or when my wife went
people seem to get really caught up on the rankings and perceptions of quality going in to the process
I think people don't apply to enough schools
It’s pretty easy since the entire application process went online. I applied to about 20 schools and got a full ride at one of the of the lower end schools for my LSAT/GPA.
I ended up taking a 2/3 tuition scholarship at a private school that is closer to home and higher ranked. Just finished my first semester and no regrets.
It doesn't help
That they charge $50 just to apply often times.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
It's still a good investment to apply to numerous schools
Many schools will give you a fee waiver and you can use the scholarship offers to negotiate a better scholarship at your preferred school.

At the time I was applying (98-99), there were only a few schools that I heard of giving scholarships. Usually new schools (Thomas Cooley? I think) and one or two that were trying to attract students while competing with other schools in their areas. Once again, I guess I should have been born later (or earlier).

I know it may come as a shock to people (sarc)
But these “schools” (which have really become just huge higher-education BUSINESSES) aren’t out there warning all their potential applicants that they could end up spending $100K and not end up getting a decent paying job 3 years later. They also aren’t telling 22 year old students, who have just been encouraged to go to the “best” school they can, all the details about having to pay back the loans they’ll have to take out.
Ultimately, it all depends on (1) where you want to be; and (2) what you want to do. I went to a top 50 law school in DC because I wanted more options in terms of career paths (i.e. big firm, government, small/solo practice) than I thought I would have going to a midwestern state school. As it turns out, with the crushing monthly payment I’ve got now for my loans, my “options” are far more restricted than if I would have gone to MU, KU, UMKC, etc.

no doubt
I’m also convinced law schools are huge money making machines
I do wish that other people involved, people at all the law school info nights, guest speakers, books, etc. had said something more about considering debt
What really sucks
Is that law schools have a vested interest in churning out as many grads as they can, while state bars have a vested interest in keeping out as many applicants as they can (to keep salaries relatively high and reduce competition). The result is, lots of law grads with lots of debt, who don’t have lawyer jobs (I know, I know, don’t cry for us lawyers)
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
I'd like to say my legal education
Since I don’t really use my law degree now, but I had such a blast in law school I would never want to take back the experience, even if it cost me thousands up thousand of dollars.
I hear what you say about the cost though. I wish I had gone to a much cheaper undergraduate institution. I probably would have the same experience just about anywhere.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
with undergrad, i think it depends on the school
but yea… I mostly feel the same way
its interesting though, since I’m a child of the late 1990s, early 00s, when we we’re constantly told that debt was not a bad thing: borrow for school, borrow for your house, whatever, it was all somehow “a good deal” in the end
I bet its different for kids coming up now

is so true and is a huge part of the mindset that has resulted in me writing a check to The Student Loan People for around $900 every month. “You’ll never regret getting your education…etc. etc.”

I’ve heard other people say this, and I usually end up wondering what the hell I was doing wrong. To me, law school SUCKED. It was absolute work. And the worst part was I paid a lot of money to do that work. I remember being so happy to graduate so I could start working FOR money instead.
I went to a SUPER cheap undergrad. Which was a big part of the reason why I said “screw it” for law school…figured I could take a student loan hit for the legal part of the education. Part of it was that I wanted to go to a better/more challenging place for law school, too. I can’t imagine being some of the people I went to law school with who graduated from expensive colleges with student loans and THEN went to an expensive law school, too. Gives me the chills just thinking about the checks they have to write each month.

Law School Comment
it in no way prepares you for the actual practice of law. Nor does passing the bar exam. The entire system is a sham. All it does is open the door to be allowed to learn on the job, at the bottom, how to practice law. I wish someone had told me that to begin with, I wouldn’t have stressed out as much about my grades, etc. You know what they call the law student who graduates last in his/her class? The same thing they call the one who finishes at the top, “lawyer.”
by royalstern05 on Dec 4, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions
Yeah, but these days the person who graduates last
is much more likely to be called “unemployed lawyer.” Or “waiter.” Or “bartender.”

And some people don't pass the bar!
I had this exact same conversation with my college roomate, who practices law in St. Louis. Law school left him totally unprepared for his job. It is way too abstract and theoretical, not nearly enough clinics and actual trial instruction. Pretrial litigation should be a required class. Negotiation should be a required class. Alternative dispute resolution should be a required class. Civil procedure should be required, but it shouldn’t be your first class and they should de-emphasize federal rules in favor of state and even local rules. Statutory and regulatory interpretation should be required. Its too much like a liberal arts education and not enough like a trade school – which is what it should be.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
I thought I got a fairly decent practical education
I had a great (and very tough) legal research/writing class my first year, and did the DC Law Students in Court clinic my third year. Those helped a ton. And I do think that part of the 1st year is, and probably should be, about molding a “lawyer” mindset.
But I absolutely agree that the classes you’re talking about should exist and should be mandatory. I would go further and say maybe you should have different tracks after 1st year. People who want to litigate could take the classes you’re talking about. Transactional people could take classes in contract drafting and interpretation, structure of different types of “deals” (i.e. what legal concerns and agreements need to be addressed in particular contexts), and then classes in specific areas that they’ll be dealing with (securities or M&A, employment, etc.). Outside of that clinic, my 2nd and 3rd years were essentially worthless from a practical education standpoint. I took classes like National Security Law, Food and Drug Law, etc., which were interesting, but completely and utterly worthless for my career. At least I got to support those adjunct professors with some supplemental income, though!

Its a very laid back school, very touchy-feely, not that competitive, and the student population is very into going out and socializing. My sister went to law school at American in DC and reported a completely different experience.
I imagine its the difference between Third Tier midwestern state schools and First/Second Tier private east coast schools.

Now we are living on the west coast and many people have never even heard of Baylor. I just graduated this year and haven’t been able to find a job, so I am applying for grad school for next year. This time, I am applying only to public schools. I wouldn’t trade my undergraduate experience, but financially it wasn’t really the best decision.

3. Favorite baseball cap.
I dig the Monarchs hats and have several. My current favorite is the white with the red bill.

Numero Uno since KU won their basketball title a couple years ago. Don’t give a damn about anything else – especially the Chiefs.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Besides tickets to watch the most fundamentally awful baseball team this side of high school junior varsity?
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
The Joshua Tree because it was current. And Revolver because it’s the best.
Oh, that reminds me
The stupidest thing I bought was probably a 20 game season ticket package last year. First, because they ended up sucking and I never should have trusted Dayton Moore. Second, because I was very naive in thinking I would be able to go to anywhere near 20 games with a one year kid.

Same here with the purchase,
but if it keeps me on the list (going to renew at least through the all-star game) it will be worth it.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
good questions
I realize my stalking to posting ratio on this site is way skewed, but I thought this was a fun waste of time this afternoon. Thanks for the suggestions, RR.
Stat: ERA, I was a pitcher as a kid and still prefer to watch a well pitched game to most anything else. I used to always figure my own ERA and adjust to 7 inning games when I was a kid.
Place: Sports bar when it’s a meaningful game and others are into it (this is a rare occasion w/ the Rs). My favorite non-K stadium (that I’ve been to) is a tie between Fenway and Wrigley
Cap: I have a St. Paul Saints hat that a buddy got for me that I wear far too often. The STP (leters overlap each other) was mistaken at a Quicktrip for St. Louis once which almost made me sour on the hat, but I decided the guy was an idiot.
Priority: It is sad how high on my list of OVERALL priorities a Rs WS is. It’s certainly #1 on my sports list, followed by KU Basketball.
Purchase: My first house. It wasn’t a horrible purchase at the time, but I bought at the height of the market in an “up and coming” nieghborhood, met my future wife the month I closed, and ended up putting it on the market 2 years later literally the month before the market tanked. Not a winning proposition nor a good investment. Oh, and we had already bought another house. Ugh.
Album: I absolutely wore out Pocket Full of Kryptonite by the Spin Doctors during that time. Wow, at least you didn’t ask favorite Cassette Tape.

I did this too, even getting to the point of calculating all my teammates stats until my coach got mad when he saw me writing stuff down on the bench.

we’re you guys also tracking which runs we’re earned or not? do they ever give errors in little league?
I scored errors on my own
I was pretty harsh on my teammates.

Exactly
I tried to be fair, but was undoubtedly biased. I was fortunate and didn’t have to do the stats on the bench because my grandpa kept score at EVERY game.

I remember my coach getting mad
when the kid who was playing right field came jogging into the dugout wearing a dandelion necklace he had made while he was out there. That coach probably would have been much more supportive of a team statistician than a team weed-jeweler.

1. I am a sucker for ERA like many of you. Greinke’s ERA under 1.00 for the first part of the season really had the Royals in the national headlines.
2. I like watching the games with my dad and brothers at their house. They enjoy me getting animated at the bullpen decisions and Bloomy PAs.
3. My favorite ballcap is my Omaha Royals batting practice cap. My buddy used to work for them and he grabbed one out of the equipment office for me.
4. The Royals World Series win and a Nebraska football national championship are tied at #1 for me. I got to enjoy the Huskers winning in the 90’s, so I would say that as of now, the Royals winning it all would be a bit more special.
5. My dumbest purchase was a pair of glasses with false lenses that I bought freshman year in college. I thought that it would attract women into thinking I was intelligent. What I didn’t think about was that by living in the nerd dorm, no girls would be interested anyway.
6. ACDC Live!- a good, not great CD by any means, but it got me pumped up before Cross Country and Track meets.
What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
Probably ERA. I still get an involuntary assessment of performance when I see some one with a high/low ERA. I’ve gotten where I all but ignore RBI as a stat, but for whatever reason, I still get a gut reaction to ERA.
Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course.
Hammons Field in Springfield, MO. The Missouri State Bears play in this four(?) year old stadium that also serves as the home park for the AA Cardinals. I went to 15+ Bears games the three years that I lived in Springfield. The tickets were two dollars with a student ID, and I could always sit with my feet up on the dugout. it’s a wonderful stadium in of itself, but I absolutely loved going to those games. You’re so close to the action, and I got to see a lot of players that got drafted, including Royals sixth or seventh rounder Buddy Baumann.
The only problem with that stadium is that it’s also the Cardinals stadium, so there’s a rather unfortunate amount of Cardinals logos and whatnot around the stadium, but you can have everything.
Favorite baseball cap.
I really like the KC Monarchs cap that is mostly white with red piping/lettering. I always kind of liked the Orioles caps for some reason.
Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
It ranks number one, two, three and five. Chiefs winning superbowl is four.
What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
A marriage license?
What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. I discovered the Beatles in high school and that was my favorite album.
Let's just trust the process.
Batting Average is still relevant dammit
- BA – If OBP is so damn relevant, why isn’t BA? It’s the biggest part of OBP. You still have to be a good hitter to have a great OBP. I could give a crap about the guy that walks 15% of the time but has a .100 BA because his OBP still stinks.
- My basement – cheaper beer, I’m closer to the action, and it’s in higher definition than real life! Though nothing beats being at the game on a sunny 75 degree day.
- My official fitted Royals hat. Almost any MLB on field cap is a thing of beauty.
- Royals WS win is numero uno. Chiefs SB is number 2.
- Dumbest thing I’ve ever purchased? Not sure. I tend to weigh my purchases carefully. I’d probably have to say my DVD collection. I stopped buying a few years ago because of the format change coming (Blu-ray), and because of things like Netflix and instant streaming/downloading capabilities that were in the works. Why buy it, if you can rent it cheaply any time you want?
- Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins
There are many ways to have a good OBP. Some one with a .100 AVG would have to be a walks/HBP MACHINE to be a productive player. That being said, a hitter with a .300 AVG, .325 OBP is much much much less productive than a player with a .200 AVG and .400 OBP, all other things (baserunning, power) being equal.
Let's just trust the process.
by trusttheprocess on Dec 3, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions
Just out of curiosity....
How often does this happen? (Assuming 500 plate appearances?)
- a .300 hitter have a .325 OBP
- a .200 hitter have a .400 OBP
Just curious how realistic these statistical pairings are….

It was an extreme example that likely doesn't exist, meant to highlight that both walk rate and BA are important
I think BA is completely underrated by a lot of people, but BA is not RBIs.
many power hitters have fairly low BAs and high OBPs...
adam dunn would the classic example .. .260 BA, .400 OBP
I always forget just how good Siamese Dream in
But everytime I pop it in I think “why don’t I listen to this all the time?”
And I don’t really even like the Smashing Pumpkins all that much.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Siamese Dream was the first CD I wanted to buy as a middle schooler
but because one of the songs was titled “Silverf***” my parents wouldn’t let me. I had to wait til I was 16 which was about 3 years after it came out. On the list of 100 greatest albums of all time, there has to be a place for SIamese Dream. Mellon Collie’s great too, but likely falls just outside the top 100.
Was beginning to think I was the only one who listened to Smashing Pumpkins a ton in HS

1. Batting Average-The object is to hit the ball, right?
2. At my parent’s house- I’ve been living in St. Louis, and it’s been awhile since I’ve watched a game with Royals fans. I have a soft place in my heart for the irrational way my family is disappointed by the Royals. I would say at Busch, but someone said there were no bad sight-lines a month ago and I got incredibly pissed off.
3. I actually liked the black Royals cap with a blue bill I had, maybe because I was going through a phase and listening to extremely too much emo music.
4. I guess right behind the Chiefs winning a Super Bowl, just because I see a Super Bowl as a more realistic possibility. Yes, even as bad as the Chiefs are right now. As for others: KU b-ball won two years ago, and is in position to win again. MU football will never win one, same goes for US soccer in the near future. San Jose Sharks and Orlando Magic choke in the playoffs.
5. The second Hootie and the Blowfish album, maybe the pull-up bar that goes on my door, sometimes MLB 2K9 tops the list.
6. Any Cake album or Let’s Get Free by Dead Prez, the latter is pretty amazing if you’re into rap music
"It’s not about the guacamole itself," Greinke said. "I just don’t want to let them win."
I got burned out on Cake pretty soon
it seemed like everyone I knew had that album(s)
and we all listened to the modern/alt rock station, so I heard it all the time
It's because every Cake album is the same
They’re not much for innovation. If you like one song, you’ll like the rest. They were the first band I saw in concert, the Ultimate Sunshine Tour with De La Soul, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, a bluegrass band, and a Mexican rock band which says something about my tastes.

2. my couch. or at the bar i always go to. everyone there is royals-first, which is nice.
3. i have a brooklyn cyclones cap. i own three caps and it’s the only one i’d consider wearable when i’m not mowing the lawn.
4. royals win world series, chiefs win super bowl, roos win ncaa basketball tournament. those are the three things i wouldn’t feel partially indiffernet to. and it would be the royals WS by a long shot.

Just reacquainted myself Brighten The Corners last week…….Malkamus still brings the noise with his solo act too. Being older, I often want to mock the emo stuff nowdays (M Ward, MMJ, Bright Eyes, etc….) but I suppose lots of that stuff is pretty damn similar to what Pavement represented back in the early 90’s….I guess they seemed a lot cooler at the time, and they had a little edge to them……gettting old is a bitch.

With a little kicked up talcum powder/dust, an ersatz barkers soapbox, and some lighting. So was that the first time you’ve seen him live and in person? I would have loved to have seen him tour with Ribot on guitar. Fave album? I’d not seen him before. I was in Ireland when his previous short tour was. Seeing him with Ribot would have been great. Omar Torrez was all right, but there were a couple of songs that Ribot would have been very much preferred.

1. Batting average. It’s nice to know that, given a hittable ball, a guy can hit it.
2. Haven’t yet found any other place I’m crazy about. I’ve been to Camden Yards, which gets a lot of praise, but I didn’t see anything particularly distinctive about it.
3. From a pure design standpoint? The Brewers’ glove logo was great, and I like the Marlins’ F-plus-fish. I also like the Twins’ “TC”, because the team is named “Minnesota” so it makes you pause and think about what it stands for.
4. # 1. Below that is any local NYC team winning in any other sport.
5. Probably any time I (over)pay for a can or 20-oz bottle of Diet Coke. I could get so much more for so much less (as a percentage of the price) in a Big Gulp or a 2-liter bottle, I should just control my thirst when the only option is one of those stupider sizes.

1. ERA – When I was little, this seemed to me to be an extremely complicated stat. Earned vs. non-earned runs, fractions of innings, etc. When I finally really figured it out, it made me feel smart. I was devastated when I learned that it wasn’t a very good stat.
2. My couch – Unfortunately, for most of my life, I have lived pretty far away from all MLB stadiums, so it’s pretty much the default location.
3. My favorite baseball hat is not a real baseball hat, but a “baseball style” hat with the logo for my grandfather’s farm on it. My uncles came up with the logo and bought a bunch of them at some point long before I was born. There are a few of them floating around our family, and it was pretty special when I discovered one in an old box at my parents’ house.
4. #1. Royals WS, #2 Nebraska Cornhuskers winning an NCAA national championship tournament.
5. A house which I purchased at the high-point of the market and just had to sell for a loss when I relocated for work. When I bought the house, I used an online “Should I buy or rent?” calculator. It said to buy. Stupid calculator.

Been to Camden Yards twice and like it a lot. Not as much as the K, though. The only other stadiums I’ve been to are Tropicana Field (yuck), the Metrodome (double-yuck), and whatever they call the stadium here in DC (new and shiny but no character).

1. I have to go with batting average. A .300 BA (for a regular) still holds some meaning for me.
2. Surprise! Stadium. (I always feel like there should be a “!”) I go to as many Spring Training games as I can, and I always have a good time. It may have something to with the games not counting – so I can just enjoy the weather and the game without worrying about the score. I recommend all baseball fans take at least 1 trip to Spring Training if they can.
3. As I mentioned above in a reply to RR, I have way too many caps. I could wear a different Royals cap every day for 2 weeks. If I expand this to all the caps I have, I could probably go a month without wearing the same one twice. I can’t pick a favorite (but it’d be a Royals design). I’m NOT getting the powder blue design that they’re showing on the official site (hideous).
4. Royals winning the WS is definitely at the top of the list. BTW, I’m also rooting for the D-Backs to get to the WS (as the opponent) – that way I have a chance to see some of the games in person. Other than that, I’m rooting for another football championship for the NWMSU Bearcats! 2 wins away – if they win on Saturday at home (I think), they’ll play for the title. Go Bearcats!!!
5. Tough one. I could probably make a list of DVDs, CDs, and books. Here’s a good one that I just thought of. I bought a Royals blanket at the team store in Surprise (so you know it wasn’t cheap – probably $50+). I live in Phoenix – although it can get cool for the couple months of “winter”, I really could get by without it.
6. INXS – Kick. There was this girl back in high school that loved them. Soooo, I started listening to them too. Still enjoy this CD from time to time – don’t know what happened to that girl……

royal design is great
and honestly, i’m stunned they never screwed it up too much
they had some hideous alternate caps in the 1990s, but they never went all the way, like, say, the brewers
Another fun topic
1) ERA
2) Fenway. Yes, I know the seats are antiquated and too close to each other for our collective girth nowadays – but you just can’t beat all the quirky angles/possibilities on balls in play. Old Yankee stadium would have been in the hunt, if, AND ONLY IF, the great Bob Shepard was still doing the announcements. What a treat that guy was! Of course, Wrigley is in the discussion, but comes up a bit short.
3) I have one of those intentionally grimy KC caps (grey with blue beak that I like to wear. Actual caps? Well I sorta like the 70s Pirates and A’s for one reason: they both sported tremendous # of variations, both in color scheme and hat styles. Call me nostalgic – but it’s sorta fun to see old footage from that decade on MLB network.
4) Royals would be 1st. Distant 2nd would be MU winning basketball championship. 3rd would be the Chiefs winning superbowl. 4th would be MU winning mythical national football championship. Now, if the morons running college football ever put a REAL playoff in place, then MU winning that would immediately vault to 2nd instead of 4th. (Yeah, it would matter that much more to me)
5) Pet Rock (are these questions designed to date myself?)
6) Two way tie between Meatloaf’s “Bat out of Hell”, and Jimi Hendrix’ “Are You Experienced”. (I’m sorta eclectic with my musical tastes) (Oh, and this question DEFINITELY dates me!)
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
1. ERA. I still use it far too heavily for relievers.
2. At home on TV.
3. Blue KC hat without the stiff front. Guess my forehead must be small or something because the hats with the still fronts look far too big on my head.
4. Probably 3rd. Would love to see K-State football & basketball win it all, followed by the Royals. Chiefs would be a distant 4th.
5. Probably a riding lawnmower. Bought it when I moved into my new house, and now, 4 years later it sits with a broken engine in the garage, well out of the warranty period. For the money I spent on it, I could’ve just hired a lawn service instead.

In front of the new HDTV… but, I would rather listen to Denny, so most of the time I am listening and on here and drinking a few adult libations…
3.Favorite baseball cap.
Hopefully, the one I am getting for Christmas from the grandkids. I do have and old one 1988.
4.Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
a ten… out of ten.
5.What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
I a Pacer. It look like an overturned bathtub driving down the road, it drank oil, and drove like a tank in quicksand. What was I thinking….

Credence Clearwater Revival…. or the Stones….

Answers from the Operator of Royalscentricity
1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
I’d have to say batting average, largely because I think there is more relevance to ERA than AVG.
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
Of the other stadiums I’ve been to, I’d say Safeco was probably the nicest experience. I was at Yankee Stadium to see The Big Unit get his 4,000th K, and it was historically overwhelming to be there, but screw the Yankees, and you can’t exactly go there to watch a game anymore… Oh, and the only time I was in Wrigley was in April, so the ivy hadn’t come in yet. I’d imagine that might change it’s place on my list.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
I have a relaxed fit royal blue est.’d 1969 Royals cap with the crown logo in gold and Kansas City Royals in thick, popped-out cursive stitching.
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
First. Even more than an Iowa National Title, and a Chiefs Super Bowl.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Anything I’ve ever purchased from IKEA. Fuck that place.
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
Probably “Automatic for the People” because it is one of the only albums I was still listening to a lot at 20. There is also the issue of “Pinkerton,” “Whatever and Ever Amen,” “X/O,” and “OK Computer” coming out too far into that time period to be able to possibly catch up.
1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
Batting Average
2 . Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
PNC Park (Pittsburgh)
3. Favorite baseball cap.
Brewer’s ball-in-glove (I don’t know if they wear it during games, but it’s a great logo)
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
Probably second. First would be Iowa Hawkeyes football winning a national title.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Maybe at miniature roulette wheel that cost about $40 (when I was in high school and therefore $40 seemed like a lot of money)
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
There’s not really one specific one. I listen to a little bit of everything.
1. Batting Average
2. Safeco Field
3. My lucky Mizzou hat
4. 2nd to Mizzou getting a national championship in one of the 2 big sports.
5. I’ve bought lots of stupid stuff. I guess I’ll sayyy, Fender Stratocaster. It’s an ok guitar, yes, I just don’t play it enough. I play my Epiphone Casino tons more.
6. Radiohead: OK Computer
If you watch Rambo backwards, it's Sylvester Stallone healing people with his magic bullet vacuum.
I read these before I got my tooth pulled, and its what I thougth about while I was getting my tooth pulled...
1. Batting Average
2. Home with a beer
3. I have this Notre Dame cap that is completely faded to the point that I can’t even remember what color it used to be
4. I would have to say ND winning it all in Football is number 1, but Royals winning it all would be a very close number 2 I only say this because I wouldn’t feel right saying its a tie. 3 would be a KU championships since I missed the last one since It happened whilst I was in Germany. 4th would be the Chefs winning it all
5. I dont really have any really stupid purchases, Im fairly frugal for the most part, so I would say the one purchase I would do over would be my Genz Benz head… It was on sale so I bought it, I didn’t even have a cabinet at the time, so now I have a kick ass cabinet and a kick ass guitar and the head just isn’t quite capable of unleashing the badassary capable of the cabinet and guitar.
6. That was around the time that I really got into Tool, so I would have to say Ænima or the Blue Album… I listened to a lot of Ramones back then too.

Since my daughter was born,
It’s been nothing but the Ramones in my house.
Is her name Ramona?
Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!
I suggested it, but no.
Her name is Layla Jo. And yes, the Jo is meant as a tribute to Joey Ramone.
They are the one band...
That I never saw live, that I really wish I could have… Of course some of the others are no longer around but could be (Im talking to you Soundgarden!!!)
The Ramones prove that there really can be beauty in simplicity… Also, if your an Entourage fan I got really excited about a Ramones biopic, only for it to not get made… Would be great if they ever get back around to it, or if they actually made one.

Fun Questions
1. Probably still ERA
2. listening on the radio in the car
3. my all black Baylor hat with the BU logo on the front
4. Royals, Baylor Basketball, Chiefs, Baylor Football in that order, but the Royals are by far my favorite team
5. Movie tickets for my wife and I to go see Bruno
6. Probably “I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning” by Bright Eyes
1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most: Batting Ave
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course: Fenway if we’re talking ballparks, O’Rourke’s in Lincoln if we’re talking bars. O’Rourke’s is prob Lincoln’s best bar. Old school, not a sports bar, not too many d-bag Husker fanatics, or frat boys, etc….nice mix of regulars, aging hipsters, english professors, newspaper guys, the retired weatherman from 10/11, granola hotties with vintage dresses, maybe the only bar on O St where you’ll see a non-white, and plenty of gambling degenerates. Good jukebox too.
3. Favorite baseball cap: I’ve always liked the Bosox red lids with the black bills
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever): easily number 1, maybe seeing Middlesborough win promotion back into the Premiere League would be number 2
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased? The DaVinci Code, Dan Brown
What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20? Shamefully, probably Mean Streets by Van Halen.

This is fun
1. I also have to say batting average. For some crazy reason a 306 hitter seems way better than a 298 hitter.
2. I’d have to either say on my TV in the living room, or the poker room at Harrahs. They will always put the Royals on for you, get to watch when I fold my hand, get half decent conversation about it with guys I try to take money from.
3. Besides the Royals hat, I’d say the old Brewers hat with the glove on it. I bought one when Seitzer went there.
4. Royals winning the WS would rank right after being present for my older son’s birth and right before Christmas morning in 5th grade when I got my Nintendo. In other words, I can’t think of any other sporting event being as good, maybe ME winning the WS of Poker.
5. My first car purchase was brutal. I was 23, just married, guy at O’Neill Honda in Overland Park totally sold me 400 extras for a CRV where I was making $450 payments on a used vehicle. I’m still pissed and would never shop there again.
6. For me, this was ‘92 – ’96. I’m pretty sure I listened to House of Pain – Fine Malt Lyrics the most. Still one of my top 10 CD’s.
at least you didn't also involve leasing a car in that purchase
that seems to be a huge scam
never heard of someone who had a good experience doing that
really a lot of love for batting average...
I have a lame seinfeld esque post on batting average coming up at some point
This IS fun!
While we dream of Jordan Parraz…
hit pretty close to my little heart there, Will. (I <3 Parraz. Like, a lot.)
1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
Probably ERA. My eyes still gravitate right to it when I’m checking out a pitcher’s stat page.
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
Rosenblatt! When I’m not working, I’m in the stands, and it’s paradise.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
Someone mentioned the white Monarchs caps with the red bill – I’ll second that. Those are gorgeous.
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities?
Oh, man. Number one.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
I’ve never made one, hugely stupid purchase. Just a lot of random crap throughout the years that turned out to be totally lame and/or unnecessary.
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
Rancid – …And Out Come the Wolves.
WTF, self?
Yow
I actually listened to quite a bit of Rancid too in HS. Black coat, white shoes, black hat, Cadillac, yea, the boy’s a time bomb.

1. SB – not that I think they’re important, but I think it’s an actual “real” number which tells you something relevant about the player. Of course, I still prefer to look at SB%…
2. In other words, “best stadium you’ve been to other than the K”: I hate to say it, but Camden Yards. Although Minute Maid is perversely charming in a lot of ways.
3. Well, really, doesn’t it have to be the old-style Pirates caps with the hoops?
4. Number 1.1. I’ve witnessed a Royals world series win. K-State hasn’t reached the final four in my lifetime, nor won a national championship in football, and one of those has got to happen before I croak.
5. Golf clubs. No, seriously… Hmm. I bought a Playstation two weeks before they announced the PS2…
6. I always had too many albums to listen to one of them enough to answer this question. I mean, it could have been Rush – Signals, or it could have been Ultravox – Rage in Eden, or Iron Maiden – Piece of Mind, or Japan – Tin Drum, or Yes – 90125, or the Police – Synchronicity, or U2 – The Unforgettable Fire, or Genesis – Abacab… really, there’s no way of knowing.

1.What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
Batting Average. Hitting .300 or better still means a lot – especially over a large sample size – like 10 or 15 or 20 years. George Brett’s .305 lifetime average is meaningful.
2.Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
Camden Yards. If any of you have not been and happen to find yourselves in the D.C. area – the 50 minute/1 hour drive to Baltimore is worth it.
3.Favorite baseball cap.
The Original. The Perfect in its Simplicity. Royals home cap. Royals Blue is the best color.
4.Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)

Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!
Dont' have time to read everyone else's... will do later
But I have a couple of minutes so here we go:
1. Earned Run Average
2. Wrigley. Not a Cubs fan by any stretch (at least they’re not the Sox) but that place is great for a ballgame. Old Style beers. Are you kidding me? Just awesome
3. Burlington Bees
4. #1 by a long shot. #2 has to be a Mizzou national chapionship of some kind (cold day in hell, I know) and not far behind would be a Chiefs Superbowl. I’d lose my mind at any of them. I was 10 months old when the Royals won in ’85.
5. An $8 guitar pick. I was made out of coconut.
6. Green Day, Blink 182, MXPX, Alkaline Trio, Unwritten Law, etc. etc etc.
The $8 dollar guitar pick made me laugh way more than it should...

Here we go....
1. I still like looking at ERA, but I am starting to think that FIP might be getting archaic so I’ll go with that!
2. Safeco Field, love the view, the train sound in the back ground and the breeze coming of the sound. (oh yeah, and the clam strips and chowda!!)
3. Mizzou hat, it used to be white and black with yellow writing, now it’s tan/yellow and black with yellow writing. It has also usurped my super old Miami hat as “The Lucky Fishing Hat”. (Fly fishing story)
4. 2nd to Mizzou getting a national championship in one of the 2 big sports.
5. A wolf pelt from Alaska, don’t ask me why, but suffice to say I was about 13 and have had to hide it ever since. I kinda feel bad about it now, man talk about buyers guilt.
6. Tool: Anemia, and Undertow pretty much in a constant rotation. There were others, like Led Zepplin, and some classics but…

OK, I'll play, without reading any previous answers
1. ERA.
2. I don’t think I’ve seen a ballgame in any other stadium but the K that is still being used. I’ve seen games at Riverfront, Shea, the Astrodome, and the old stadium in Arlington. I see a good few soccer games at the Camp Nou, though.
3. I don’t wear baseball caps because I look even dorkier with one on, and I’m not bald, so I have nothing to cover up. I think the Yankees’ looks the coolest. And I hate the Yankees.
4. Second. Right now my number one sports priority is FC Barcelona’s quest for a repeat triple-win of the Spanish League, Spanish Cup, and Euro Champions League. They did it last year and they look good to go so far this season. In modern times the only other club to win the triple (its country’s League and Cup and the Champions) was Man U in ‘99. If Barça can repeat, it’ll be the highest peak of sustained performance any European club’s ever reached. A KU national basketball championship would be third.
5. At the top of the stock market I bought $2500 worth of shares in the Spanish food processing company Pescanova. I’m still waiting for them to come back to two-thirds what I paid for them before I dump them. I wish I could say something cool like “I paid $150 for a dose of chlamydia in Vegas,” but I can’t.
6. That would be ‘82-’86. Probably “Blonde on Blonde.” I was really into Dylan and the 1968-1973 Stones. The semi-contemporary stuff I was listening to included “Stop Making Sense,” “London Calling,”, Springsteen’s “Nebraska” and “Born in the USA,” and “Live Rust” by Neil Young. I also liked Johnny Cash, REM, U2, Dire Straits, AC/DC, and the Blasters. Not to mention the Ramones’ first four albums. I absolutely hated all the crap they were playing on KY102, Journey followed by REO followed by Van Halen. Yecch.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
After reading all the previous answers
Yeah, at home with a beer is the best place to watch a ballgame.
I really, really, really want Barça to triple-repeat. They have such a good team and an excellent coach, and this town is behind them. All the folks are Barça-crazy. To give the fans credit, they’re Barça-crazy when the team is losing, as well. The problem is they turn into a lynch mob if that happens, and woe betide the player they decide to pick on.
I think probably too many people went to law school. On the other hand, here I am with a master’s in linguistics, and boy, am I making a fortune. At least it was at KU and I didn’t have to borrow a bunch of money. Private college education is one of the biggest scams there is.
My music answer really did sound like “Record Store Guy,” didn’t it? I’m no Johnny Cash-come-lately, though, he’s been a favorite of mine ever since he was on TV when I was about five.
I do the occasional small investment. The dumbest thing I ever buy might be a €3000 share in a microbrewery they’re setting up near my wife’s hometown. It’s run by a barley farmers’ co-op, so I think it’s legit, since they make an annual profit (mostly thanks to European Union subsidies.) And I figure it’s hard to go broke selling beer. Their idea is to make a very high-quality product sold at a high price through the restaurant and bar trade and not try to get into the supermarkets at all.
I look so dumb with a ball cap on that you wouldn’t believe it.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
i actually look horrible in caps too
and I love them
but I dont’ wear them anymore..
now that I wear glasses, it just doesn’t work with a cap

These threads are always fun
1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
ERA
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
Fenway Park. I visited Boston about five or six years ago, and out of all the ballparks I have been to, Fenway has been the most exciting, storied atmosphere to watch a game at.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
I have a UC-Berkeley baseball cap I wear all the time. I guess that counts. The old-school Monarchs caps are also pretty freaking sweet.
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
Probably just behind the U.S. National team winning the World Cup, and maybe the Jayhawks winning another NCAA tournament. But definitely in the top three. I would second Minda and say me winning the World Series of Poker, but I don’t think poker counts as a sport…

Agreed
It’s maybe a little heavy on the pop-punk, but I guess that goes with the age in question.
Darth Yoshi’s response reminds me of a time when I was working at Spider House (a horrible hipster coffee shop in Austin, Texas, that I unfortunately worked at for two-and-a-half years) and a guy came up to me while on break on a very slow day to see if I would play a CD of his. Now I normally wouldn’t do that anyway, but he came up to me, album in hand, and asked if I would play Liberace. I looked at him and despite my general hesitancy to be a dick to someone about music I dismissively told him that I don’t play other people’s music because it sets an ugly precedent.
Then he asked, “What about Dio?”
How weird was that guy?

Man, sports still aren't a place to reveal one's love of musical theater...
I think South Park’s episode satirizing High School Musical gave musicals a bad rap. :) (So did High School Musical, for that matter…)
PS: Duggan—Liberace = Les Mis? Really, dude, really? C’mon.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go add sequins to some costumes…
More on Musicals
Musicals had a bad rap waaaayy before “South Park.” I had to sing that stuff in choir back in the 90s before “South Park” and “High School Musical” existed, and it was not cool.
My main problem with musicals isn’t that singing is ‘gay’ or something like that. It is that I hate when characters break into song and dance while doing some every day activity. I cannot suspend that much disbelief. If a musical is about making music in some form, then I’m all for it in theory. I’ll even make exceptions for works as transcendent as Hedwig and the Angry Inch. For the most part, musicals do not operate within the confines of reality and are not so much better/different than the standard fare, therefore this guy is not a fan.
Also, as someone fairly familiar (reluctantly) with the music, I can say that more often than not the music in musicals is underwhelming and does not stand strongly on its own.

Yeah, there are certain songs that stand out, but most of them are complete turds.
I’ve been forced to watch my fair share. There are only a few I can stomach. South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut is a great musical for the people that don’t like musicals. The HSM episode of SP was terrible though.
All of the Trey Parker flicks have at least one cheesy musical number...

1. What traditional stat do you find yourself still clinging to the most?
Home runs. Nice, decisive number. I’m not so silly as to think that twenty-three home runs made Miguel Olivo the Royals’ best player this past season, but they still catch my attention.
2. Favorite place to watch a baseball game, other than the K of course:
Roger Dean Stadium, Jupiter, FL. Spring training home of the Marlins and Cardinals, and their respective Florida State League teams. There’s a certain zen to watching an A-ball game with about 100 people in the stands in a park built for spring training crowds of 8,000 or so.
3. Favorite baseball cap.
Not really a baseball cap, but I wear to death a cap with the old ABC Sports logo. It confuses people. As for an actual baseball cap, I have both Marlins and Royals spring training site caps which were once white, but have been worn well beyond recognition.
4. Where does the Royals winning a WS rank on your list of sports priorities? (i.e. compared to the Chiefs winning the Superbowl or whatever)
It’s the one remaining unfulfilled, since KU won a basketball championship a couple of years ago and my alma mater (FSU) won two football championships while I studied and then worked there.
5. What is the dumbest thing you ever purchased?
Any number of books which got tossed aside in disgust somewhere in Chapter 2.
6. What album did you listen to the most between ages 16-20?
The "Ol’ " part of my board name is legit; I have blocked out most of ages 16-20 for many reasons.

Great answer on #5, I could have put any book I bought for a college class.

I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
Since they were screwing me on buying and selling books for college
I kept those I couldn’t sell. At least they’ll be useless reference material should I ever need to remind myself or teach my children about Abstract Algebra, Econometrics, Multivariable Calculus, Macro/Micro Economics, Linear Algebra, HTML, Java, C++, or Applied Operating System Concepts!
Uhhhh...
I actually used my C++ book as kindling for a fire one camping trip… Fuck that class.
