Once the major free agents sign, the Royals expect left fielder David DeJesus and possibly right-hander Gil Meche to draw significant trade interest....
For the Royals, the idea of trading either or both players would be to reduce payroll and increase their inventory of young talent....
The Royals, lacking payroll flexibility, do not expect to be active in free agency. Outfielder Scott Podsednik, however, is one player in whom the Royals are showing interest....

What could we get back?
It doesn’t make sense to me to trade those two.
If I was confident in our GM getting real talent, I’d probably be all for it. But he won’t. He’ll trade Meche for toolsy CF who just flat out cannot play ball or a corner guy with no pitch recognition skills. And he’ll probably trade DDJ for another 2B and 1B.
I don’t like being negative, but Moore needs to stick to the one area he hasn’t screwed up (yet): the draft. Make marginal progress, spend your money correctly and wait for the system to recover. In the meantime, keep the legitimate big leaguers you have so some of the average fans have a reason to come to the park.
Man!
If GMs out there are getting smarter
they’d realize that David DeJesus is almost as valuable as Jason Bay, at a fraction of the cost. So, hypothetically, he’s worth a good prospect.
Having said that, I agree that this depends a lot on other GMs and (especially) Dayton Moore realizing this… um, yeah.
As for Meche, he’s much less valuable in trade than he was a year ago, and not just because of his performance, age, and injury concerns. He’s owed $12M each of the next two seasons, and while he’s got a decent chance of being worth about that, there’s likely little or no surplus there; in other words, teams could probably get about the same value on the open market. So smart teams aren’t going to be trading much of value for Meche at this point.
As for Podsednik… such a bad idea that it’s not worth discussing until it’s actually confirmed the Royals are going after him. I have him as a -10 hitter, so does CHONE, and he’s basically played average LF defense lately.. he’s a poor man’s Mitch Maier, only older.

Thought the same thing about Podsednik...
Who has the picture of the dog running through the yard and trying to stop titled “Do Not Want”? That was my reaction to Podsednik.

but also more expensive
thank God we’ll be shedding DDJ’s crippling salary

Why is it almost every time there's a rumor,
It is completely soul crushing/mind numbingly dumb? If we put Scotty Pods on this team, I will not go to any games this year. It’s tough enough with a 2 year old and a 5 month old. Why bother?
feel the same way
when was the last cool/intriguing Royal rumor? maybe Dayton’s first year?
by Will McDonald on Dec 4, 2009 11:27 AM EST up reply actions
Please God let there be some truth to that
Especially if it’s Guillen for Pagan…even if Dayton has to eat $8M+ of the contract. Pagan will probably make, what, around $2M in arbitration for the 2010 season? So…$10M for Pagan, or $12M for Guillen. Pagan please.

Would you classify the Meche-for-Larson/Carrasco as negative?
I thought it was ok but we should’ve gotten a third piece.
DIdn't hear that one.
I’d be happy to dump Meche for anything as I don’t think we’ll compete this year or next year without significant changes. So why not get rid of the good stuff we have that we don’t expect to be around in 2-3 years? I like the players in that trade though, means it won’t happen.
tend to agree
If I was confident in our GM getting real talent, I’d probably be all for it. But he won’t. He’ll trade Meche for toolsy CF who just flat out cannot play ball or a corner guy with no pitch recognition skills. And he’ll probably trade DDJ for another 2B and 1B.

Opps sorry
I posted the link to mlbtrade rumors before I saw you already had this posted. Sorry
I don't see this happening
at least not for Meche. He is much more valuable to us than to others. We have no #2 guy in the rotation to replace him.
DeJesus I can see, but I think it is unlikely. I think the Royals, much like the fans, actually value DeJesus. Teams looking for a trade will be bargain hunting. Some teams will have interest, but will not put a real package together to get it done. He’ll have more value at the trade deadline (due to injuries).
Trading him for prospects does make sense, just needs to be the right prospects.
What would Podsednik cost, is he cheaper than DDJ these days?
I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

I love DJ
But I’d be for trading him IF Dayton was just cleaning house and starting over. DJ will net us decent return, so if we’re taking the Pittsburgh route, it makes sense.
But if we’re just retooling for a run in 2011 or so with the same players – it makes no sense. DJ is one of our best position players and we have no in-house replacement.
I can’t see Meche getting dealt. We’d either have to eat a bunch of money or he’d have to re-establish his trade value with a good start in 2010.
Scott Podsednik. Wow. It reeks of a Dayton Moore acquisition. Player who was once speedy, now past his prime, has a fluke year, plays terrible defense according to the “defensive metrics” he knows nothing about, but the scouts, relying on reports from several years ago probably think he still has great “lateral movement”. It will be great seeing him stumble around CF on opening day.

do you really trust moore to get a decent return for him?

He is not the train wreck that he used to be.
Let's hope Dayton can do the same
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a GM that didn’t have so many mistakes to learn from?

The Dayton Press Conference and Notes from the Last Week
Suggest that both Fields and Callaspo can play left field, according to him. He emphasizes it when talking.
Whether that is a real answer…dunno. But that is Dayton Moore’s answer.
Clarification
The press conference did not happen in the last week; it was for the Teahen trade.
Watch us trade DDJ
then sign Bedard and Podsednik on 1 year deals

Felix Pie never played for the Braves or Mariners
So why would we get him?
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Felix Pie is so overrated
What does he do? Get on base at a poor rate, not hit for much power and have a good but hardly great glove.
DDJ is so far above Pie I think I would slit my wrists if that was a 1-1 trade.
Pie is underrated at this point
He’s not as good a hitter as DDJ, but he came around this season. He’s five years younger. Not sure on service time. HE’s a very good defender.
Not sure he’s exactly what I’d want back for DDJ, but he’s a decent player with some upside, and the kind the Royals should be trying to acquire. I did a write-up on him earlier this season.

by Matt Klaassen on Dec 4, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions
Pie has only two years of service time
In his age 24 season, he hit for good power with a .176 isolated slugging percentage (266/326/437), while increasing his walk rate to 8.7% and reducing his strikeout rate to 23.0%. His batting average was about 15-20 points lower than it should have been, given a good 21% line drive rate but only a .314 BABIP. He still has trouble swinging at pitches out of the zone, but despite that, his contact rate was right around league average. For projections, minor league performance is a good indicator too, and he hit well in the high minors as someone just old enough to buy a beer. And he will only be 25 next year.
There seems to be a lot of unwarranted backlash against Pie because he likely will never be the superstar that some hyped him to be and took a bit longer to develop than expected. Given his defense at a premium position and solid hitting skills, however, he is a pretty safe bet to be at least an average major league player going forward, with a decent chance of being better than that.
Would you rather have Pie for DDJ or Scotty Pods?
That’s what I thought. We’re totally getting Scotty Pods.

they have a ton of OFers
then why trade one for another….makes little sense.
Greinke
wouldn’t have to worry about Podsednik killing him anymore……talk about fluky stats. Podsednik has no business being on our roster. Been there done that with that type of player.
so Pods for 2 years 5 million in a week is what you're sayin'

gotta sign him quick
before Randy Winn sets the market at 2/10 and we have to double it to snag the highly coveted pods.

i hope not. That would not be nearly enough money to waste….lmao.
so our starting outfield could be
Pods in LF, Anderson in CF, and Bloomers in RF.
that would be awesome

Well this is encouraging
General manager Dayton Moore declined to comment directly on Podsednik while again emphasizing the club’s preference to seek trade possibilities over free-agent acquisitions next week at the industry’s annual winter meetings in Indianapolis.
"You know what we need and what we’re looking for," Moore said. "But our focus right now, as I’ve said before, is really not on free agents. Sometimes, they recruit us. That’s what is happening right now.
"

So Scotty Pods hired a publicist
to link him to the Royals?
Well
If there is another team out there that’s actually wants you, and that team has very reasonably only offered a 1 year deal worth around $1M, wouldn’t YOU want to sell that team on the fact that Dayton is interested in you? Meaning that the Royals have a competing 2 year, $3M deal on the table. What other team would be better to use as a ridiculous straw man with a track record of overpaying/overextending mediocre (or bad) players to pump up interest?

And makes me much happier
A Scotty P acquisition means DM has learned nothing. So this might show some growth!
Don't know if the DDJ rumor is true or not,
but I have to say Moore at least has given the APPEARANCE of being unsatisfied with him, time after time. First, their was the whole “he’s not good enough defensively to play in CF, so let me acquire three kajillion CF projects via the draft, trades, or free agency” period, followed by comments about corner outfielders have to have a big bat, now followed by this.
Don’t misunderstand – I can see the logic in trading DDJ if (AND ONLY IF) it means he is truly committed to a REAL rebuilding job aimed at competitiveness in the 2012-2015 range.
That being said, how sad is it that the NEARLY UNANIMOUS CONSENSUS of the readers of this site trust Moore to get equal value for DDJ about as much as they would trust Mark Mangino in a candy shop.
Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!
mangino seems like more of a carbo loader than a candy guy yo me

Yeah, it does seem like I stole it from somewhere, but if I did it wasn't a conscious choice.
Probably a mix of Kids in the Hall, Simpsons/Futurama, Monty Python, and/or Saturday Night Live.
The nearly unanimous consensus here would be ...
that if Tony Reagins called every GM in baseball to gauge interest in Gary Matthews Jr., Moore is the only GM that would say “Tell me more!”. Every other GM would be madly stabbing at the phone, trying desperately to hit the “mute” button before they were no longer able to stifle their laughter.
Just curious, but...
is there any indication that Meche would waive his no-trade clause? I don’t know if he is at a partial no-trade clause yet, but I know it doesn’t dissolve fully until after next year. I don’t know the guy personally or anything, but I imagine he’d be open to waiving it in order to be traded to a contender.
DDJ, on the other hand, I wouldn’t want to trade unless we got one elite prospect plus one solid prospect in return, minimum (I am thinking maybe an A- and a B/B+ prospect on the SIckels scale). DDJ is a reliable, known quantity who plays solid LF defense and adequate CF defense. Which naturally means that Moore will get robbed if/when he flips him.
That's asking a lot for DDJ
he’s good, but not that good.
I’m sure all “we should trade him” talk assumes that he would be traded for the right thing. Cliff Didn’t get back a whole lot more than that, and the Phillies are probably going to end up getting 8 wins out of him, at least.

But if a team buys the "as good as Jason Bay" line
we should be able to get something damn good for him.
GIven that Bay and his agent (supposedly) felt comfortable turning down 4/$60 from the Sox
I’m guessing teams aren’t buying it
I really don’t hate Jason Bay or anything, but 4/$60 itself seems fairly over the top for him… Even with an optimistic take on his defense, I would think teams shouldn’t go over 4/$45 for him.
Then again, i thought Billy Sims was going to break every NFL rushing record there was, so what do I know.

That was kind of my line of reasoning behind what I asked for DDJ
And DDJ is on a far more club-friendly contract than Bay will be anytime soon.
according to mellinger
he nowe only has a partial no trade

Anyone will waive their no-trade clause
So long as they get paid more money. Its simply a negotiating tool.
