Winter Meetings Day One Open Thread

It's funny, but I didn't know the Winter Meetings existed until about 2006. Now, I can't wait for them each December. Longtime readers know the drill: if you see something posted by one of the usual suspects, post it here.

Dayton Moore has been active at the Meetings in the past, and he's already off to a fast start this off-season. Expect the unexpected. Which may be better than the insane (aka the least well-recieved post in RR history).

They should have had it in Pawnee

Then Leslie Knope could have tried to build a stadium on the empty lot and lure a team to make its home there.

supposedly the Mets are interested in Gil...

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/mets-looking-at-meche.html

I’d be open packaging his 2/24M with Guillen’s 12M to pick up Castillo’s 2/12M. Other than that, I think we’re losing more by dealing Meche than we’d get elsewhere.

I also like dealing with Minaya whenever possible. It’s worked out well for us before…

no way we bring in Castillo.

Wouldn't mind seeing Meche moved

I’d rather have Angel Pagan though, and a prospect.

by AxDxMx on Dec 7, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

I think the money is the more relevant issue here

I’d rather dump guillen and meche’s deals and have 18M in free salary than Pagan and 10M free.

Castillo put up a solid .387 OBP last year, granted his SLG was .346… Not a horrible guy to have around though.

Castillo

I don’t get a Castillo deal, with Getz in the fold as well as Callaspo, at this point. Maybe a month ago, but not now… From the rumors, KC’d probably get Pagan back, but I don’t know what else? Metsies seem to be loath to trade pitching, so I don;t really see a match anywhere. Unless it’s a precursor to another deal… dump Guillen and Meche for Pagan and Castillo, then do Castillo for Bradley? Just spitballing… not in favor of it…

by davepond88 on Dec 7, 2009 10:09 AM EST reply actions

I agree

Doesn’t seem like a good match unless the Mets are willing to take on Meche’s salary without dumping Castillo on us.

by RoyalsRetro on Dec 7, 2009 10:26 AM EST up reply actions

I think we have at least a shot to get a decent match here

I do NOT want Castillo brought in. But the Mets need pitching and it might be a good time to sell on Gil. I like Gil and he’s done some good things for us, but with his injury history and with the Royals trying to up his durability (with Hillman in charge of that), he’s going to be done by June.

I haven’t looked through their system, but I say Gil nets us a few decent prospects. And at least a “throw-in” that GMDM does so well with.

This guy showed up on Baseball America's Hot Sheet in September

KIRK NIEUWENHUIS, CF

        METS

Team: high Class A St. Luice (Florida State)/Double-A Binghamton (Eastern)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .452/.514/.774 (14-for-31), 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 4 BB, 10 SO, 1-for-1 SB
The Scoop: Nieuwenhuis has to be upset that the season is ending, because at this rate of improvement, he’d be flirting with hitting .400 by mid-November. He was plugging along with a solid but unspectacular season until August arrived. Since then, he’s hit .363 with 15 doubles, three triples and eight home runs-he had 10 home runs heading into August.

*You think I'm good* "You know, that Farnsworth is pretty good." *You will give me 9 million dollars* "So, Farnsy, how does $9 million sound?"

I'd still love to have Pudge back there

receiving ZG and teaching our youngsters within the system. They could learn so much from him. Not to mention with him behind our plate calling pitches, ZG would be even more dominate.

Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.

by 306008 on Dec 7, 2009 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

If Pudge was still good defensively

I might agree with you. I might even be willing to tolerate how severely his bat has deteriorated.

But Buck has plenty of big-league experience and really, aside from throwing out basestealers, he is better than Pudge right now both offensively and defensively. Both Meche and Greinke have raved in the past about Buck’s game-calling smarts. He has plenty to teach younger pitchers too, I would imagine.

In short, if all Pudge has going for him at this point is intangibles, no thanks. Buck and B. Pena would be preferable.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 7, 2009 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Buck had an OPS+ of 103 last year, same as Olivo

And he’s better defensively (except for CS%, which Olivo was terrible at last year). I’m not against keeping him. Especially if someone else’s backup will cost $1.5M or more.

by AxDxMx on Dec 7, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

What will Buck get in arbitration?

Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.

by 306008 on Dec 7, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

$3-$4 million

On the market, he is not worth that. He would be worth non-tendering and trying to re-sign around $1-$2 million (although I bet there is a fair amount of competition for him if he is non-tendered).

by Gopherballs on Dec 7, 2009 12:40 PM EST up reply actions

He made $2.9 million last year

and arbitration consider both service time and how much a player made last year in addition to actual performance.

by Gopherballs on Dec 7, 2009 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

Pudge is a bit above average defensively

but he can’t even hit as well as Yuniesky Betancourt. Oh, and he’s in this late 30s. What’s the point other than a pointless Dayton Moore nostalagia trip? What’s next, bringing a crappy CF who’s worse than MITCH to take his place? Let’s see, Scott Podsednik? Just kiddin’. Oh, wait…

have a lot more to do with their agents trying to pump up interest for clients that are facing a bad market than it does with the Royals really being interested in signing either of them. Who knows, though? With Dayton I’ve learned to hope for the best, but expect the worst when it comes to free agent acquisitions.

RUMOR!

ESPN Chicago’s Bruce Levine says sources have told him that reports that the Cubs traded for Tampa Bay’s Pat Burrell then shipped him to the Mets is completely erroneous.

From ESPN’s Winter meetings live thingy.

by kcbottom9th on Dec 7, 2009 12:51 PM EST reply actions

oops, this

Also, Levine says the Cubs and Royals have had discussions about finding possible salary matches for Milton Bradley.

by kcbottom9th on Dec 7, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Meche? are you kidding?

Bradley for Guillen? Yes— the Cubs unload a headache and free up $8mm (2/20 vs. 1/12). The Royals need to think outside the box; accepting Bradley’s temperament to get his underpriced production is the kind of move the Royals can make that most teams would not. If you assume Guillen is worthless (and you should), it’s likely that Bradley will be worth more than the 2-3 incremental wins needed to justify the extra $8mm spend.

Adding Meche to the deal makes no sense for KC, and assuming the Cubs are hell-bent on not bringing Bradley back in 2010, there’s no need for the Royals to be so generous.

by aquaman213 on Dec 7, 2009 2:05 PM EST reply actions

All these links between Colletti-, Moore-, and Hendry-run clubs are perfect

Love the Dutton WM preview article, too:

Moore is looking to maybe trade cost-controlled guys like Callaspo and DeJesus, Bannister and Davies, but is ’disinclined" to trade Gl Mche.

He wants to bring in Ivan Rodriguez, who I think was last good when my grandparents were alive.

Apparently, Mitch Maier isn’t good enough for CF, but mid-30s Scott Podsednik, who hasn’t regularly played Center Field in years and can’t hit better than Mitch, is a consideration.

If that article isn’t enough to push anyone onto the “Fire Dayton” side of things, I don’t know what will, other than finding out that he slept with Tiger Woods.

its amazing how quickly this thing ran off the tracks

2006-7: moore sorta cleans house, makes a bazillion moves, gets Glass to spend more on amateur talent

2008: gil meche contract working out convinces moore he can build a winning big league club through FA… drafting expensively continues, but nearly everything else related to the rebuild stops

we’re basically the red sox or yankees in how we’re approaching things now (with 30% of the budget)

Podsednik makes zero sense

First, Moore says he wants to obtain as many cost controlled players as he can. Then, he wants to get Podsednick?

Now, granted Mitch is no great shakes – but he IS cost controlled, he COULD get a little better, and, I’ll say it – he wasn’t that bad last year in the first place.

Certainly not a part of a contending team in some distant future year we can all only dream we will live to see – but DEFINETLY a viable placeholder until the farm system develops another Beltran.

same as the bedard deal, 4th place teams don’t need to spend money to get to 3rd

by Will McDonald on Dec 7, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

Soo

we should not spend money and hope that the same players we have will suddenly get us to 3rd? Or do you believe that we have the ability to just skip 3rd and go straight to the top? I’m of the thinking that getting to 3rd would open a lot more doors for this team for the following year.

FKA "MileHighKCfan"

I’m curious what these doors you speak of hold

Tangled up in Plaid

by McClure 'stache on Dec 7, 2009 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I’m no expert at this sort of thing. But I would think an improved team, even if only to 3rd place, would increase attendance and revenue at the stadium. Which in turn SHOULD mean that Glass will continue to spend money, especially if the product on the field is improving. And winning makes KC more desirable, whether it is in the free agent market or internationally. My point being, we always complain that we can’t compete for bigger names or even mid-level guys because nobody wants to come here. Well, make it more appealing and then they will. And in most cases, 3rd is more appealing than 4th. Climb one rung and then use what you gained to your advantage to continue climbing.

It's actually been confirmed

that you are not pretending any more, you are actually staying late.

I will neither confirm nor deny constantly checking Royals Review in order to ‘be there’ with the rest of you on the very second we all become aware of the next glorious piece of The Process.

Not a bad move from his perspective

He likely could have found a job in majors as a bench player (and is good enough to start for some teams), but he would make the major league minimum. In Japan, he can make enough in one year (U.S. hitters often get at least $1-2 million) that he does not have to worry about retirement. And he can come back in a year or two and try the majors again.

$7.5 guaranteed? Incentives to $9? I didn’t think he’d get more than $5 for a year.

Any word on what Carl Crawford is going to do yet?

And besides Guillen, who will be available next year…

Too early to extend Guillen?

Never too early grasshopper

The process demands we lock up our premium talent early.

Like we did with Teahen.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

My guess

the Rays are gong to hang onto him, since they should contend again next year. If they feel like they’re out of it at the deadline, they’ll move him.

The re-signing of Julio Pimentel did not get its own thread?

He went from Top 10 prospect to future reliever to hurt to minor league free agent to reclamation project in two years.
