    I want to know how

the Rangers are in the same catcher boat as us:

The team is looking for a catcher as well. Durrett names Jason Kendall, Rod Barajas, Jose Molina, and Yorvit Torrealba as targets.

Have all of their supposed catching prospects crapped the bed?

    Salty keeps getting hurt

and they’ll seemingly do anything to avoid playing Taylor Teagarden. I know some people say his bat is incredibly slow, but he’s a catcher with a good defensive rep and is still relatively young. They should just sell low on him to the ROyals.

YOu'd have to ask someone else

HOlland and Feliz seems pretty kick-ass to me, and Andrus obviously is really good. The catchers… yeah, maybe. But its the Rangers themselves who are wasting Teagarden’s service time.

Also, interesting that the Yankees picked up the #1 spot in the Rule V Draft

First, it’s perplexing that a team needing talent like the Nats would do it, but I guess they didn’t see someone they liked.

But, secondly, it means someone is going to get picked in that spot because the Yankees wouldn’t have done it for nothing.

by sterlingice on Dec 9, 2009 8:59 AM EST reply actions

Brian Bruney is probably more valuable than a Rule 5 player to be honest

Sounds like they’re going to make him their closer, rack up some saves, and trade him for something a year or two from now.

But Mike MacDougal is the closer

This is a good move for them. The Rule V is a guessing game. Remember you have to keep that player on your MLB roster for the entire season.

The trade for the Yanks makes sense. You open a spot for a cheap guy on your roster. While it makes sense to trade a future star (according to everyone) like Jackson for a current star in Granderson when you are trying to pick up a Rule V to save money… that opens up a little salary but I guess for the Yanks, it doesn’t even matter.

    Here's what's sad

A smart organization would at least entertain the idea that Brayan Pena might improve enough to overcome whatever perceived deficiencies the Royals “braintrust” seems to think he has.

The Star article actually cites that they are looking for a placeholder, and that the minors are well stocked with catchers, but no long-term solution is expected to make it before late 2011.

Why not give B Pena the chance to be that placeholder? If he surprises you and improves defensively enough – then you have an asset to trade when Myers or somebody else emerges in 2012. If Kendall or Molina or Barajas surprise you with good performance, you have an OLD, WASHED UP catcher you CANT trade in 2011.

    Sigh.

    New topic

sounds like Baltimore said no to Pie for Callaspo, instead wanting Gordon or Butler.

I have to agree with Moore here, in that I would not trade Butler or Gordon for him.

    Question for d-f:

What is your take on that? I think Callaspo would have been a good deal for Pie, for both teams. I assume Baltimore was dubious about his ability to switch to third, as they apparently are looking for corner infield help.

    Another question:

Wouldn’t it have made a HELL OF A LOT more sense to trade Teahen to Baltimore for Pie, and keep Callaspo at 2B?

    That might be cool

I’d also consider Banny for Pie..

But I was tweeting with an Os fan last night, and he sees the Os as in a similar situation to the Royals — not ready to make a push for contention, with more young depth in pitching than in position players. If that’s the case, Meche doesn’t make much sense for them.

No way I do Meche for Pie straight up

I would want a decent prospect thrown in with Pie. Seeing you say that didn’t make me angry, d_f, but it did surprise me quite a bit. It isn’t just that Meche is (clearly) the better and more valuable player, I think you are overvaluing Pie and his potential quite a bit.

I would, however, like you, probably flip Bannister straight up for Pie.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 9, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Except Pie gives you about 2 WAR for $400,000

    and years of club control

Meche likely gives you 3 WAR this season (and I think that’s more than fair), less the next, and costs $24M over that time in which he may not even be worth that, given the current market.

if anything, the Os might need to ask for more back

by Matt Klaassen on Dec 9, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

it gets complicated, because of the money

Meche is better than Banny, but is also 11 times more expensive

I don’t know if I’d pull the trigger on Meche for Pie…

but Meche’s health is the x-factor here

by Freneau on Dec 9, 2009 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Frankly, I think the money makes it less complicated

Meche isn’t Miguel Cabrera, here. He’s a good pitcher on the decline getting paid at least market rate for two years.

It doesn’t fit the “fan” mindset, but, yes, the money saved on Meche could be useful ijn 2011 when the FA market is better. And Pie will give value after Meche is gone.

Oh, and that’s even assuming Meche is healthy enough to hit 3 WAR next year. He’s at least as likely NOT to as he to exceed it.

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs.

by Matt Klaassen on Dec 9, 2009 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

    so from that perspective...

why would the Orioles make the deal?

by Freneau on Dec 9, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

    I don't think they would

I’m just saying I’d jump on it

THe Millwood deal also illustrates my point — Millwood isn’t as good as Meche, but he’s about a league average pitcher. He just Got traded for Chris Ray, a mediocre middle reliever (0.5 WAR, tops), and the Rangers are sending money, too. There’s probably greater distance in expected WAR value between Millwood and Ray as between Meche and Pie.

I doubt Baltimore would have taken Teahen for Pie

I like Teahen and wish him the best, but he’s a terrible 3B defender, and his bat just hasn’t come along. I don’t know what the White Sox are thinking.

Callaspo-for-Pie seems fair to me, but maybe the Os don’t see his defense playing any better at 3Bg than at 2B. It still seems fair, as the Os have a bit of a jam in their OF, and Callaspo is a good hitter. On the other hand, Pie is two years younger, a plus CF defender, and so still has some upside, whereas Callaspo is probably as good as he’ll ever be, which is decent. Not that Pie’s a future superstar…

ON other words, I think it was a good idea by Dayton, if it’s what happened, a fair offer, but I can see where the Os are coming from. MacPhail was also running the Cubs when Pie was discovered, I believe, so he might be attachecd.

Another possibility MacPhail maybe have gotten spoiled by boning over guys like Bill Bavasi and Jim Hendry the last couple of years, and doesn’t want to hurt his (justified) badass rep by doing a fair trade with the likes of Dayton Moore.

    You really think so?

I see Bert as a short stroke, compact quick swing… the type of contact hitter that ends up around .285 for a career and he’s already shown he can hit .300 over 500+ ABs.

Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.

by 306008 on Dec 9, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Callaspo should have a nice long steady career with his swing

but he has effectively reached the ceiling for his type of hitter. With his size and swing, he is never going to add much more power, and he lacks the speed to take the extra base on close plays. I would not be surprised his 156 ISO from 2009 ends up being close to his career high. His defense may not be as bad as it was last year, but while cutting down on the misplays and bad throws are certainly within his control, his range is only going to get worse as he ages. There just is not much upside remaining from what he did in 2009.

Pie already has shown more power with a lot more room to grow — he has the frame to add power without significantly cutting into his speed. Pie actually had a better walk rate than Callaspo last year. He will always strikeout more and make less contact than Callaspo, but he can make up for it with his power and speed. I might not go as far as Mr. Fingers and say that Pie will be a better hitter than Callaspo in two years, but I would say that Pie likely would be as good as hitter as Callaspo (in terms of value from hitting). With the significantly better defense, Pie would be the more valuable player overall.

by Gopherballs on Dec 9, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

I just don't think that the power would be there when he plays at the K.

Not sure what you are citing, but if it does, it is not by much

The K also decreases strikeouts by almost 10%. Overall, the K has played just slightly above neutral in favor of hitters, while Camden has played almost exactly the opposite. Pie moving from Baltimore to KC is not going to affect his performance much, if at all. In fact, not facing the Boston, New York, Tampa Bay, and Toronto pitching staffs so frequently may actually help him.

by Gopherballs on Dec 9, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

The K decreases K's because the Royals pitchers suck..

    I made this reply elsewhere

But Callaspo will regress next year simply because the odds are he will not play everyday. Getz starts at 2B, Guillen (sorry, but its true) starts in RF, and Hillman will not use Callaspo as a DH because he doesn’t have enough “slug.” Callaspo’s value has never been higher, and Pie, who was a big prospect, still has upside. Not only would I make the trade, I’d throw in a young arm to make it happen if it would (although I understand Baltimore also has a lot of young pitching talent and may not want that).

    Pie, Teahen

The O’s don’t want Callaspo apparently because they want a power hitter at a corner. Like I said above, the Royals should get a third team involved. As far as what the White Sox are thinking on Teahen, I think Kenny Williams thinks the Royals screwed with Teahen by moving him around so much and that he will be better in all respects of the game if he just sticks at one position (although it’s hard to tell if the sox will actually stick with that).

    Callaspo

(Sorry, the “reply” button isn’t working for me.) It just dawned on me that Callaspo could have some real value to the royals batting right-handed, considering his splits and that both Getz and Gordon bat lefty (I haven’t looked that their splits, but I know Gordon struggled last year against lefties). In other words, if Bert stays on the team (which I pray every day he does not), I’d expect him to play at least every time the Royals face a lefty on the mound (but that’s assuming we have a manager with half a brain).

by AJaha25 on Dec 9, 2009 11:09 AM EST reply actions

    Gordon has struggled with lefties

but it’s still too early to platoon him regularly. If he needs rest, make it against a LHP if you can, but don’t protect him.

Callaspo as a super-utility who plays every day makes sense, but again, that downs his value a bit.

I admittedly know next to nothing about advanced defensive metrics

But I’d have to agree with Warden, the playing time of the various combos you’ve thrown out is still so small that there’s no way significant sample sizes exist to draw any real conclusions.

Ironically, by Dayton’s own preferred “metric” the super-reliable and valuable stat known as the “Error.” Yuni was actually a worse fielder than Callaspo last year. In 161 games, Bert had 17 errors, with Yuni flubbing 7 plays in only 71 games (for the Royals). Project that out over a full season, and even under Dayton’s 1970 statistical analysis, that’s one putrid middle infield defense. It’s amazing that he’s so quick to excuse Yuni and his terrible bat, but apparently trying to move Bert off 2B (or the entire team) even with his comparatively incredible offensive performance.

I’d guess he’s DFAed when he comes off the DL. If we can’t deal Callaspo, there will be too many infielders on the team already (Butler, Getz, Yuni, Gordon, Bert, Fields, and Spork). That only allows for four outfielders and two catchers (with one of that group DHing), because we all know there will be a 12 man pitching staff.

Oakland may only be a year away

Brett Anderson is a monster (high K rate + low BB rate + groundballs = the Felix Hernandez skill set). Trevor Cahill should be really good too, plus the A’s have lots of interesting major league ready (or near ready) pitchers and only need a couple of them to step foward. And Beane has collected lots of interesting near ready prospects and young hitters under club control.

Lefty pitcher % post on A'sNation was pretty interesting

i registered with them to post a comment, but i can’t comment etc until 1 day from registering. My comment would have been something like this:
If you remove the bottom-quarter (or so) of the lefty pitchers, you have to replace them with righties—righties who are worse than the current set of MLB righties, which seems to mean that you have to get to the balance where you could add/subtract a lefty or add/subtract a righty and they would have the same FIP (and have the same number of pitchers overall that you started with). And I imagine this affects the 22% number by a decent amount, though of course the well-thought-out and -researched point is still plenty valid and interesting.

    here's the plan

Instead of a centerfielder, since obviously no body is fast enough, we bring olivo back. Then we move callaspo to short since he has more range than yuni. We take yuni and put him about 10 steps behind olivo to handle passed balls.

We politely ask the opposing hitter not to hit the ball towards the centerfield area.

    problem solved!
