The Royals, no surprise, won’t part with first baseman Billy Butler or third baseman Alex Gordon. And the Orioles apparently aren’t interested in anyone else, including the idea of switching second baseman Alberto Callaspo to third. . . .

Unless the clubs rekindle talks, the Royals will likely continue their pursuit of free-agent outfielder Scott Podsednik.

Dutton

At least GMDM isn't giving up on Gordon. I can't believe the O's think they could get Butler for Pie. They may be very close in WAR, but Billy just showed the team that he's ready to soar while Pie isn't considered a full-time player by Baltimore.

Also, I never cared about Podsednik before, but I already hate him now.

No worries

Hey Coco is still available. Look, if you were Baltimore, who would you rather have? With the rumors of Podsednik, take it with a grain of salt. We have enough all grit, limited talent players like Wilie. Also even if we sign Podsednik for a good price, he is a significant upgrade over Josh Anderson. Anyway, until players like Jarrod Dyson and Derrick Robinson make their mark, what choice do you have as a Royal fan?

Disappointing

Callaspo for Pie actually seems like a reasonable trade that fits both teams well.

Really?

I don’t think it’s a good deal. It’s not a bad deal but I think we’d lose that one.

Pie is turning 25 in February. He is an average CFer. I don’t think he’s going to be anything more than he is now. He is Joey Gathright in his younger car jumping years. Would he help us defensively? Probably. But I think I’d rather have and OF of DJJ in LF, Anderson/Maier in CF, and someone in RF. I think that with Callaspo hitting makes our team better in the long run and the short term….

Um, no way

Pie is two years younger than Callaspo. He isn’t quite as good a hitter, but whereas Callaspo is a terrible defender int he infield, Pie is a pl us defender (better than anyone on the Royals) in CF. He also has slightly less service time than Callaspo. His power is increasing, and at 25, still has more developmental time than Callaspo.

That would be a fair deal for the Royals and the Os.

Boy, the Os sure are crazy to ask for Butler. What, do they think that Dayton Moore is so stupid? Why didn’t they just offer Yuniesky Betancourt for him?

but away from the bandbox that is Camden yards

Does Pie’s power improve?

Yes

Camden Yards park factors per stat corner

2B: 90.2
3B: 87.2
HR/FB: 101.6

Camden Yard suppresses doubles and triples and plays neutral for home runs.

He is an average CFer.

Average CF > Average 3B

Except

Unless Getz isn’t the starting 2B (he will be), Callaspo is going to play RF (he won’t) or Hillman had enough vision to use him as the primary DH (he doesn’t), Callaspo is not going to get everyday PAs—he essentially becomes a supersub on the 2010 Royals. A straight up trade for an everyday CF who still hasn’t had 600 ML plate appearances would be a good deal under the circumstances.

All of this is irrelevant if Baltimore won’t make the trade, which, if there is a lot of interest (which there seems to be), they shouldn’t sell low.

If you look closely, it really says "CentralChamps2012."

You guys are selling me on this... partially.

I’m still under the impression that we’ll be better with Callaspo’s bat in the lineup and someone else’s defense in the field.

What kind of OBP does Pie put up?

Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.

by 306008 on Dec 9, 2009 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

He has a career .326 OBP in 568 major-league plate appearances

Which, ordinarily, isn’t great, but (a) Pie is still improving and has some upside (his OBP and walk ratios have improved with each year he has been in the majors), and (b) it’s the Royals.

I, too, am disappointed the Orioles turned down Callaspo-for-Pie. I might have even been willing to offer the Orioles a low-level throw-in to get the deal done.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 9, 2009 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

wait, I stand corrected

.326 was his OBP last season. He has a career .305 OBP. Which is pretty bad, but he has a career .244 batting average, which seems more to be the cause of things.

Point being, Pie has exhibited a modicum of plate discipline. 24 BBs in 281 PAs last year isn’t too bad.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 9, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions

even in extremely lmiited PAs

his stats show what you’d expect from a guy his age: increasing walks, less Ks, more power

Callaspo alone doesn't seem enough

If there’s anything the Royals have a supply of, its pitching prospects with upside. How good a young arm would you throw in if that would make the deal happen? Hayenga? Sample? Lamb? Or do you go with Pods instead (cause that seems to be the only other option right now)?

If you look closely, it really says "CentralChamps2012."

by CentralChamps2009 on Dec 9, 2009 10:42 AM EST reply actions

That really depends on the deal.

How long do we need Podsednik for? How long until Robinson is ready?

The O's are looking at high priced pitchers like Millwood

I wonder if they’d take Meche and give us Pie and one of their many great young arms like Jake Arrieta?

No way they'd do it

Meche is good, but he’s paid to be as good as he is, that would be a terrible deal for Baltimore

should have drafted him then

Hosmer or Matusz. The stupidest part is Dayton is on a quest to get a left handed starter. Matusz is going to be a good left handed starter.

I think that's probably a fair trade

Except that I wonder if Scott’s OF defense has completely deteriorated, or whether the O’s are just so stocked with outfielders that they only needed to stick him at 1B/DH last year.

Plus, the fundamental problem here is that the O’s just don’t seem to be interested in Callaspo. At least not as their starting 3B.

Scott's been a good defensive outfielder

but, of course, the only place he really pays out there is LF… which is filled.

he's also like DDJ

in that he’ll only be cheap while the Royals are rebuilding, and he’s not young enough to keep around longer than that

I don't blame Baltimore if they don't want Callaspo.

That’s there preroggative. so i don’t think adding a small piece is going to get it done. We’d probably have to add a third team. maybe we can get Jeff Keppinger back from Houston to send their way.

by BrRoyal on Dec 9, 2009 1:11 PM EST reply actions

If I were Dayton

Zack, Soria, Butler, and Gordon would be untradeable. Callaspo, Meche, and DDJ would be available at the right price, which is more than Felix Pie. Everybody else I would be more than willing to deal. Or, in several cases, pay money to be rid of. Too bad Woody Harrelson’s dad is in jail for murdering a federal judge, or we could hire him to do a hit job on Guillén.

OT: It might not sound politically correct, but what about “Black Jack” Soria as a nickname? It sounds cool, there’s the high-roller gambling reference (of course, blackjack always wins), and there was a genuine Old West outlaw named Black Jack Ketchum, who was white.

Black Jack was not an especially successful outlaw, though he did ride with the Wild Bunch sometimes. They finally hanged him for train robbery in New Mexico in 1901, and his execution is notable because they’d never hanged anyone before in that county and weren’t real sure what they were doing. They set the drop way too long and it tore his head off. Photo postcards were made and widely sold, and I believe there’s one posted at Ketchum’s Wikipedia page.

We need some outlaw nicknames for the Royals. Gordon could be “The Nebraska Kid.” Butler could be “Baby Face.” Banny could be “Doc.” Callaspo could be “Machine Gun.” If DDJ is sporting a goatee, he could be “Blackbeard.” Or “Pretty Boy.” Farnsworth could be “Mad Dog.” Or “Wild Bill.”

It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
