Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Mellinger is on the right track here. I concur with his observation that McClure might be the guy to help. I mean, this is the kind of stuff Dave Duncan and the Cards take advantage of. Normally the Cubs take advantage with Rothschild being their pitching guru. But one man's guru is another man's bad fit. What's the downside for KC? - TL

Rich Hill has been a disaster

Not just during the season but during winter ball as well.
I wouldn’t mind a trade for him and would probably actually like it but jeeze. I wouldn’t expect him to miraculously pitch like its 2007

by Royal from Queens on Feb 1, 2009 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Nobody's expecting...

…a miracle. It’s rather a risk that has great upside and little cost. – TL

by timlacy on Feb 1, 2009 5:16 PM EST up reply actions

you're right

I’d rather have him pitching than Horacio Ramirez.
But I guess it’s all moot point now…

There is always filler type players

I don’t care how good your farm team is everyone has some filler players. I agree Dayton has been good but not that good.

by TXroyal on Feb 1, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

Guys that could be traded?

Mitch Maier, John Buck, Miguel Olivo, ehh that’s pretty much it, other than minor leaguers.
I personally don’t think either of those guys gets it done for Hill. But who knows…

Guys

I think RR forgot to say:

No risk no reward

Besides Hill cant be any worse that Jimmy Gobble was last year.

by ezstreat on Feb 1, 2009 1:33 PM EST reply actions

Did you...

…read the article? Hill has had some great moments in the Bigs. There’s no question that there’s a potential reward here. – TL

by timlacy on Feb 1, 2009 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

he doesn't have any options left...

we’d never be able to send him down!

That's why we play the season on paper.

by 306008 on Feb 1, 2009 2:11 PM EST reply actions

Precisely.

That’s the risk part. – TL

Good players with psychological issues...

the new market inefficiency?

I'm puffing away, Hal.

+100

That’s pretty much right on target. We did it with one; can we handle another? – TL

nope

by doublestix on Feb 1, 2009 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, what?

I thought Quentin’s “problem” in ARI was that he kept getting hirt. That and their usually-savvy GM decided Eric Byrynes was a better investement..

yep

it was all about injuries for him. nothing psychological about it.

Amen brother

I saw something that said they were counting on HoRam to make the rotation just because he’s a lefty. Hill would be a much better choice.

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

Again, the upside is way high here. The guy needs out of the pressure cooker that is Chicago. And we did this at least once before (e.g. Knoblauch). – TL

by timlacy on Feb 1, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

ummm

Knoblauch was terrible and did not switch back to 2B in KC. However, I do like the idea of trying with Rich Hill because he’s still young.

by BrRoyal on Feb 1, 2009 5:52 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like the Orioles are gonna lock Hill down tomorrow

according MLTR.com

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Feb 2, 2009 12:11 AM EST reply actions

Trade him for a PTBNL

If he never turns it around, the Cubs get a fringe prospect. If he becomes an okay reliever, they get a decent prospect. If he becomes genuinely good, they get a good prospect.

Hill for Haltiwanger, straight up

It would hurt, but I’d do it.

Mantranga is a deal-breaker, though

Thinks the Royals are interested if a deal falls apart for Baltimore.

Grrrr

Cubs giveaway reliever Michael Wuertz to Oakland for two nothing minor leaguers (IMO the equivalent of Chris McConnell and lets say Brian McFall)

I’m quite confident Wuertz will have a better season than Farnsy, and for about $3 million less.

seems like the As are picking up cheap, decent relievers left and right

didn’t they pick up Russ Springer, too?

by Matt Klaassen on Feb 2, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yes

Amazing how they figured out how to acquire cheap decent relievers. We used to have a GM like that. What happened to him anyway?

I think he made one good signing, then Glass opened the checkbook, and he lost his mind when he saw all those zeroes
