Favorite Music from 2008
Since the super bowl thread got some of us talking about Springsteen and his music. I got curious as to what kind of music RR users listens to. For starters, if you have to go to a deserted island with an album released in 2008, which one would it be? 2008 can be considered a down year for music, but there has been a few excellent new bands coming out as well as Lil Wayne of the world releasing some nice materials.

90s, and the pass word we are looking for is
Triphop
Triphop
Good try though.

That Portishead was my #1 of 2008.
It’s a pretty challenging evolution from trip-hop, ditching the dinner-party, DJ-scratch vibe of the ’90s version.

I don't have favorite albums
I have favorite songs…
And so last year the songs I had no problem listening to on repeat were:
Nicola Fasano – 75 Brazil Street
David Guetta – Love is Gone
MIA – Paper Planes
Kanye West, Jay-Z, The Fratellis, and Coldplay also entertained me but I don’t feel like listing what song it was exactly I liked, i just know I listened to them alot.

I'd agree with you, but
it was a 2007 album.
Great album despite being way too short.

oh and I'd suggest
at least giving the new Girl Talk album a try. If just for the sheer fun of finding old songs you remember.
Official site where you can get the album with the price of your choice is below.

This will appear ridiculously detailed. And it is.
I compile weekly personal charts over at my website and another Proboards website. I compiled my third annual yearly personal music chart, as well, back in late December.
As for current music, I listen to primarily alternative/rock, but also occasionally some hip-hop. I also occasionally like awful ’80s hair metal/flare and classic country.
Here are my top 100 songs of 2008:

Alkaline Trio score their first career yearly #1, “Help Me.”

(Finally getting around to responding....sorry for the delay)
Yes, I love A7X. the intro. to “Afterlife” is amazing. I was a little slow to catch onto them. “Bat Country” peaked in the lower 20’s, and then each release became more and more prominent until “Almost Easy” and “Afterlife” were released. (“Dear God” dented my top 40, and “Scream” made its way to the mid-20’s).

In retrospect, I shouldn’t have charted it nearly as high. It was just a catchy, disposable pop-rock song. Sometimes, they make my list. (“Addicted” by Saving Abel comes to mind).

how good would coldplay be if...
Freddie Mercury came back from the dead and was their lead singer instead of nancy pants
BTW I have thought about my alltime favorite band dead or alive and instead of making an OT post I will just lay it out ((not just favorite by position, but band would actually have to sound good (in your head)))…
Freddie Mercury…lead vocals
Jimi Hendrix…lead geetar
Flea…bass
Danny Carey…percussion (or Peart/Moon/Bonham…hell even underrated Ringo)
how badass would that be…
bonus…John Lennon on backing vocals/rhythm guitar
and Macca on vocals/keyboard

Dream bands from real life that didn't work out:
Audioslave: Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) with the band of Rage Against the Machine. Lots of hype, no good songs.
Velvet Revolver: Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) and the band of Guns’N’Roses. Had promise, but hasn’t done much. Is Scott back on the drugs?

I watched Stephen from SURS interview Weiland
….He definitely seemed normal….no drug-influences. He looks surprisingly good, too, which was odd considering all the rehab/drug treatment he underwent during the late 90’s and early 00’s (manifesting in a skeleton/ghostly appearance in those Velvet Revolver videos).
I attended Rockfest ’08, where STP headlined. Weiland definitely seemed high on something during that concert.

So many supergroups, so little time
The Raconteurs (technically)
Angels & Airwaves
Army of Anyone
Satellite Party
A Perfect Circle (technically?)
+44
Box Car Racer
Transplants
Foo Fighters (sorta)
…Some are admittedly less “impressive” than others.

Just to break it down further:
Raconteurs = White Stripes + Greenhornes + Brendan Benson
Angels & Airwaves = Blink 182 + Offspring + Distillers
Army of Anyone = Filter + Stone Temple Pilots
Satellite Party = Well, I think this is just Perry Farrell….it includes members from other bands though…not sure how prominent they were
A Perfect Circle = Tool + James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins
+44 = Blink 182, two members
Box Car Racer = Blink 182, two members
Transplants = Rancid + Blink 182
Foo Fighters = Nirvana + Sunny Day Real Estate

It’s a weak excuse, but I am operating a notoriously slow laptop…have been for the last 1 1/2 months, which may explain the brief post drop. Most of my posts on this site originate from a non-dinosaur-era laptop source.
So many people consider Coldplay ‘emo’, but isn’t that term more or less reserved for the bands of more punk origin? Like Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights etc. etc. etc.?
As with funk….Did somebody say Red Hot Chili Peppers?

I looked through my collection
The only thing I have from 2008 is a couple of Japanese pop singles, an indie band’s decent-but-not-great sophomore effort, and We Are Scientist’s Brain Thrust Mastery, which wins by default.
Otherwise I spent 2008 exploring the world of 80s Japanese punk and 70s Japanese pop idols.
I had a weird year.

It was Ben Folds. It was okay. I downloaded MGMT’s “Time to Pretend’, that MIA song that played in "Pineapple Express” and that catchy Vampire Weekend song. I think that’s it. I’m old.

I bought
a pair of CDs. Like RoyalsRetro, I bought the Ben Folds CD as I am a Ben Folds “Will buy anything he puts out” fan. I agree: Okay. Not great. Just okay. I also bought the new Killers CD. I liked Sam’s Town a lot, Hot Fuss just a slight bit less, then the new one. But the again, I have only heard the whole thing like, once, because my car’s speakers decided they were giving up.
There were a host of songs I liked (not enough time to list them all), but I only bought the two CDs.

As a Ben Folds "will buy anything he puts out" fan, did you hear the Amanda Palmer CD?
He was pretty much an equal collaborator on “Amanda Palmer Must Die.” (She’s the Dresden Dolls singer.) I still haven’t heard it, but I read a lot of good reviews.

Awesome list above
My favorites albums were from Okkervil River, Vampire Weekend, Airborne Toxic Express, Adele, Carolina Liar, Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip, MGMT, and the Old 97’s. I just got the Alkaline Trio album and The Killers album is strange to say the least. I also preferred Sam’s Town, but this one is growing on me.
On the Meego song, is this the year that synth rock and disco came back? Just seemed to me like that was the case, especially MGMT. That and it’ll be the year that hip hop jumped off the diving board into a pool without water, with everyone fighting over whose Auto-Tune voice is better.
But I still have my british rap from Pip.

No idea if these are ‘08 releases, but also liked Les Savy Fav’s: Lets Stay Friends, Giant Sand’s : ProVisions, Stephen Malkmus’ : Real Emotional Trash, the new TV on the Radio, a 2008 live performance by Tom Waits in Atlanta that I dug up on NPRs website, Bug’s The London Zoo, and GZA’s Pro Tools.

I'm a tired old man.....
But Nick Cave is one of the few bands from my ute who doesn’t sound dated…..it was his seminal work with The Birthday Party that helped me transition from the Doors, the Scorpions, and Van Halen and into the Velvet Underground, the Clash, and Public Image Lmtd. He’s a pretentious ass, but he takes his schtick seriously……I saw him absolutely blow away some younger “who cares ain’t we cool” bands at a festival in NY last Spring. He still above league average in rocking, and has a plus wit.

i must admit
i havent spent much time w/his early career. i really need to.
yeahs he’s got that cocksure rock swagger thing down for sure, its pretty cool. like the video from dig lazarus dig just makes me laugh ( the look on his face )
he’s just a legit weird fucking rock and roller. i’d love to see him play sometime if he ever tours near kc ( chicago?).

True dat
He’s one of my all time faves…..unfortunately, he rarely gets close to KC, he was in Chicago in September….check out “Your Funeral My Trial” or “Henry’s Dream” if you want to explore the back catalog…….he’s got a “greatest hits” CD that would be a good primer too. Birthday Party stuff is good too if you like hard/aggressive/experimental stuff.

Sigur Ros
I think their new album was in 2008. http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/
All their music is in Icelandic, so you can make the lyrics whatever you want. Also, the new Radiohead album In Rainbows was brilliant.

Favorite Albums
In no particular order:
Bon Iver: For Emma, Forever Ago
Vampire Weekend: self-titled
Death Cab For Cutie: Narrow Stairs
My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges
Lucinda Williams: Little Honey
David Byrne and Brian Eno: Everything That Happens will Happen Today
Kanye West: 808’s and Heartbreak
Ra Ra Riot: The Rhumb Line
Tokyo Police Club: Elephant Shell
Coldplay: Viva La Vida
Kings of Leon: Only By the Night
I’d have a hard time picking a favorite amont these. It would be a toss up between the new Death Cab, My Morning Jacket or Bon Iver, but these are the albums I keep coming back too. They are also the ones I tend to find my way back to, when I can’t decide what to listen to.

I love kanye, but 808's
by my opinion is really no good…it sounds produced in an 80s new york basement, which is kind of cool, but kanye extends himself so far in the I-wanna-be-prince-but-can’t-because-there-is-only-one-prince direction that is seems innovative at first but is not very talented and I liked at first, but it just doesn’t hold up after a couple listens

NIN, Serj & White Sripes
are the only ones from the list I spent much time at all listening to. Really enjoyed all 3. By far the best show I saw was Down. 311 in Springfield was awful, the P-nut kept cutting out and had to dick with his amp cord the whole time, the Shrine Mosque has terrible acoustics, and was not their best set list IMO.

Summoned by PhattStairs! The Best/Worst of 2008
I spent most of November and December listening to great music in order to compose my Best of 2008 Top 10s and recommendations. But with new releases scarce in January, I spent that whole month listening to everything terrible last year had to offer. Per tradition, I’ll deliver the bad news first. Here are 2008’s worst, #46-5. (#4-1 appears this Friday). Fortunately, and understandably, there seems to be very little overlap between the albums suggested above and this list.

Recommended if you like... The Best of 2008
I’ll start with a few selections that complement bands that have already been mentioned:
Recommended if you like DOWN:
Deadbird, “Twilight Ritual”: Sludgy blues-riff metal from Arkansas
http://www.myspace.com/deadbird
Burst, “Lazarus Bird”: Some sludge, some pretty prog-stuff with fancy guitar harmonies, really nicely composed 7+ songs, nice mix of clean/brutal vocals, from Sweden
www.myspace.com/burstrelapse
Cult of Luna, “Eternal Kingdom”: A nice companion to Burst, see above description, really; also from Sweden. A concept album based on a diary found in an old asylum.
www.myspace.com/cultofluna
Recommended if you like SIGUR ROS:
Actually, the new MONO album doesn’t come out until 2009, but I can’t recommend this band highly enough to anyone who enjoys epic, cinematic instrumental music.
www.myspace.com/monojp
The next couple groups are a little louder, for people who love the basic Sigur Ros soft/loud dynamic but wish the “loud” part would include a few metal riffs:
Russian Circles
www.myspace.com/russiancircles
Daturah (from Germany)
http://www.myspace.com/daturah
And this one is a little subtler take on the formula, a bit jazzier perhaps:
Guapo (from London)
www.myspace.com/guapoband
Recommended if you like: JUNO Soundtrack kinda stuff, catchy, charming indie pop
Noah and the Whale
www.myspace.com/noahandthewhale
The Whitsundays (from Canada)
www.myspace.com/thewhitsundays
Recommended if you like: METAL and you’re not afraid to be a bit adventurous about it.
Nachtmystium: Psychedelic black metal, like a really spooky version of Pink Floyd.
www.myspace.com/nachtmystium
Kivimetsan Druidi (from Finland): Self-described rock ‘n’ troll, it’s speed metal + medieval folk with female operatic vocals
www.myspace.com/kivimetsandruidi

Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, She & Him, all good.
Other new albums in 2008 by older artists that I thought were very very good: Al Green Lay It Down, Elvis Costello & The Imposters Momofuku, Brian Wilson That Lucky Old Sun, Randy Newman Harps and Angels, and Fireman Electric Arguments.
