OT Banter Game: Over, Under and Just Right.

Fun game to break up the monotony of discussing baseball when no baseball is being played:

1. Name something that is over rated.

2. Name something that is under rated.

3. Name something that is correctly rated.

Be bold.  No one is right or wrong.  People will disagree.  We’ll talk and pass the time.  I’ll go first...

Jack Nicholoson's career is over rated.  I think the last time he was actually required to act in a way not almost entirely consistant with his own personality was in 1980 (The Shining).  Of his early classics I think only Chinatown and One Flew Over the Cuckchoo's Nest have held up well.

Van Morrison is under rated.  I know, Van Morrison is much loved.  But until he is rated at least as high as The Doors and Bob Dylan he remains under rated.

Joe Posnanski is correctly rated.  Everyone likes to read Joe’s columns.  Everyone knows Joe pretty well knows what he is talking about.  No one pretends Joe is a baseball genius, or that he deserves a Pulitzer Prize.  Joe Po’s writing occasionally transcends the genre of sports writing, and the public recognizes he is good enough at his craft to get away with this.

OK, I pretty well strongly disagree with #1

I love fireplaces. I can’t imagine them being over rated.

Maybe because I haven’t had one in the last twenty years has led me to feel this way.

One of my favorite things. Renting a cabin in the woods when there is snow on the ground. Sitting by the fireplace. Reading. Drinking. Talking. Taking the dog for a walk. Heaven. Just heaven.

you mean fat/gay/nerd jokes aren’t really really awesome?

The silliness, the absurd silliness of the site amazes me: on the one hand using numbers to talk about baseball is a sign of all kinds of bad things most centrally a pathetic personal life, yet on the other, a blog devoted to attacking other bloggers/message-board posters is fine.

Presidents

Too soon to rate W. My Presidents:
Overrated: Kennedy – Bay of Pigs, Berlin Wall, and Cuba Missile Crisis all arouse because of his weakness in foreign policy
Underrated: Reagan – Economic policy mirrored Kennedy’s, got even greater results, but he is ranked 17 to Kennedy’s 6. Doesn’t compute with me.
Correct: Lincoln – ’nuff said.

by Chyladin on Feb 16, 2009 8:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with Kennedy being overrated.

Reagan is tricky. Great politician, but he came into office with the national debt at 500 billion, and left with it at 1.7 trillion. More damaging, he showed other politicians you could ignore national debt & get away with it. Did lots of fantastic stuff, but the current massive debt is his legacy.

by hunter s. royal on Feb 16, 2009 8:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ended anyways?

I will agree that communism is a doomed theory, but Reagan deserves credit. Communism expanded into new countries during every single Presidents term from 1945-81. During Reagan’s presidency communism was confronted in other countries, capitalism won, and communism contracted. It was the Reagan administrations ability to exploit the weakness of communism (including it’s leadership) by putting pressure on the USSR and undermining Soviet influence in the satellite states of the Eastern bloc, with the help of the Pope, that ended the USSR.

“The Presidents” series that is on the History Channel currently. Personally, I despised Reagan.

It doesn’t mean his happy-go-lucky schtick wasn’t effective in governing the country. He did take over in a depressed era and give it a pr boost. Was it mostly bs? Probably. Still, the country rolled along without ultimate destruction & that’s a positive. I did point out that his ultimate legacy is the current national debt.

by hunter s. royal on Feb 16, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Am I the only one

That thinks the economic growths that occurred during the Reagan & Clinton years (specifically) were due more to their time in office more than their time in office? By that I mean, if Carter/Mondale had beaten Reagan, and Bush/Dole had beaten Clinton, that the expansion of Wall Street in the 80’s & the coming of the internet in the 90’s would have grown the economy anyway?

That is why Reagan is overrated in my estimation. He started a bullshit ‘war on drugs’ that is still seeing wasteful spending, and the aforementioned debt. I feel Clinton’s intentions, of fair housing were more noble in nature, but they also helped lead us to our current situation.

BOOM! ROASTED!

by GoBabies!! on Feb 16, 2009 9:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, I do agree with you

I think that Presidents have more power to screw up an economy than to actually fix it. Reagan and Clinton get more credit than deserved on the economy, but at the same time they didn’t screw it up and should get credit for that.

On the flip-side, Carter and W. Bush screwed up the economy, each in their own way. That’s the fear I (and a lot of people much more qualified than me) have about all the spending that Obama is doing. It might cause more harm than good. Either way, the economy will eventually recover but it will be because of the people and business and not because of the government.

Inflation was already rampant during the Nixon years

Carter bore the brunt, and then the Reagan administration inherited the recovery,a s well as Volker (sp?), Carter’s guy, who implemented the anti-inflationary measures they had already planed on with Carter under Reagan.

Jimmy Carter may have been a bumbler, but:

He let Paul Volker run the fed without interference. It was painful, and probably cost him re-election but it let the economy take off and contributed to Reagan’s reputation.

and completely planned economies also fail

also problems:

labor theory of value (Marx himself saw this in Grundrisse’s “Fragment on Machines,”

The non-homogeneity of labor (also assumed by classical Marxist economics)

The problem of history (Asiatic Mode of Production — the reason Marx abandoned the ontogenetic reconstruction in the early drafts of Capital (the Grundrisse), and started over with a logical reconstruction of the system.

And, of course, the Soviet Union (and, as Cornelious Castoriadis noted, by 1921, the only “Soviet” in the Soviet Union was in the name), was based on a pathetic parody of Marx himself (if not completely divorced from the tradition) — the embarrassingly incomptent revision of Engel’s revision found in Lenin, which was then somehow made even worse by Stalin…

Reagan Ranking

17 was his ranking in the Economic Management section. I agree with the national debt thing except he used deficit spending to challenge and eliminate the Soviet Union. Nice result and 1.7 trillion is manageable. He even fix social security by creating a surplus account to deposit what was a surplus in Social Security tax receipts to pay for the baby boomers once they retired. HW. Bush didn’t do anything to balance the budget after the fall of the Soviets. Clinton raided the surplus account to “balance” the budget and left my generation (27 years old) with the problem of paying for baby boomers. w. Bush expanded government spending more than anyone but FDR with huge increases in education spending, the prescription drug plan, etc. Reagan increased the deficit to 1.7 trillion over 8 years. It took a lot of neglect of 5 different Presidential terms over 20 years to grow it to were it is now.

Was given tremendous momentum by Andrew Jackson and kinda fumbled it away. I think he could have been better but he was a better behind the scenes guy than he was President. Would made a great Chief of Staff. Not so good President.

I'm a big fan of Dane Cook standup

acting, well I don’t even need to explain how awful that is.

But like a few have said, it is a lot of observational shit, but why does that matter? He conveys it in an over-the-top way and it’s really funny. And it is not alll observational, a lot of the stuff he says is way out there and it appeals to a lot of poeople. I mean, Jerry Seinfeld did it and it was ok. Dane Cook did it for a younger generation.

One of my favorite sets is when he talks about when there is an accident or something outside your house, everyone has to come outside and watch as the paramedics and police come and he puts a lot of funny shit into it. Did I realize that people did that? Well yes, I guess subconsciously I realized that but until he made the jokes about it, I didn’t really think about how weird that is as a society we do that. I guess all I’m saying is that just because it’s not your kind of humor doesn’t mean he’s not a great stand-up comedian. Horrrrible actor.

Overrated: Baseball Prospectus. Despite its rep with both adherents and opponents, it’s lost too much ground to be of much use to the sabermetrically informed (WARP is useless, VORP is broken, most everything it has [except for the still-awesome PECOTA and also {a bit oddly) its baserunning numbers] can be found somewhere else done better and/or free, and now there’s really only one real “analyst” on staff (Nate Silver, who isn’t around that much, I guess Clay Davenport kind of counts, but he’s more of a number cruncher…), and the rest of the people are good riers, but come close to being Buster Olney with the BP imprimatuer. I won’t name names.

Underrated: Beyond the Box Score. Doesn’t carry stats, but the analysis is plentiful and impressive, from number crunching, reviewing contracts, going over the season, pithc- f/x stuff… A group of people of a variety of ages who have too much time on their hands, but I love it. Not to rub it in, but BP probably has 1 piece a week as good as your average BtBS post.

Correctly rated: Fangraphs. It kicks ass, and everyone knows it. It’s the best baseball analysys site out there (THT might be underrated now). It destroys Baseball Prospectus in every fashion — the analysis and analysts are consistently better and plentiful, the stats are more helpful. Oh, and it’s free. Yes, BP has PECOTA, but Fangraphs hosts ZiPS, CHONE, and more. Frankly, if BP didn’t do fantasy, it wouldn’t be worth subscribing to with Fangraphs around. I’m still not sure it is.

BP has moved into the next phase

but i think part of the problem is that they’ve lost so many guys to the industry

by Will McDonald on Feb 17, 2009 12:07 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

then replace then

Sky, Dave Cameron, and others are doing it for basically nothing at this point.

Hell, they could fix most of the problems internally. I’m working on an article on VORP now. All they have to do is switch to EqR from MLV and use SImple Fielding Runs (if they still can with Fox working for the Pirates). That would fix a lot.

But what is the next phase? Basically, they’re just another “insider site” if you take away the stats. And most of the stats are broken and/or superceded. It’s just PECOTA now.

Not to beat it to death, but they’re like a once-great baseball team that didn’t bother having a farm system. Do we give them props for that?

undervalues walks by half

no shit. And people have been telling them this for years now.

There are other problems, but that’s the biggest one. My article compares VORPs numbers with some of Justin Inaz’s (who uses custom linear weights). VORP gets some guys wrong by 20 runs (although that’s not all the walks). Their way of estimating replacement level from yearly averages also presents problems, as does their non-adjustment for AL/NL levels of difficulty. I also find that relative to Justin (and probably FanGraphs, too), VORP seems to overvalue 1Bs.

Hmmm… undervalues walks, overvalues 1Bs and DHs… Maybe the “Bravest Way” guy was wrong: Dayton does know what VORP is.

funny how I actually listened to him play

notice I didn’t say he sucked, either, “buddy.” But he’s not close to the top 10. He’s a good player, yeah. And that might put him into the top 10 given that if most current guitarists can “play,” I can’t tell because most of their stuff is buried in three miles of Mesa Boogie preamp fuzz.

But just being “good” doesn’t make him one of the “greats,” no matter how many old Strats he owns and entertaining interviews he gives.

I have not problem with Frusciante. He’s by far the best musician in that band, from what I’ve heard. I just don’t dig their shtick.

Even though he's "the great"

he’s still underrated. Especially among German historians, since he didn’t really advance an idea of a papal monarchy. He wasn’t political enough in the minds of a lot of old-school Germans. They see Leo the Great, Gelasius, and Nicholas I as being more “important popes” of the early medieval period. Also, his name has “Great” in it, but most people don’t really know what he did (Gregorian chant wasn’t really his idea). His legacy was also tarnished for about 100 years or so after he died (because he was the first monk to become pope, most priests didn’t like him), so it took a long time for him to be seen as important. Also, he’s a big figure in my dissertation, so I had to give him some props.

Hemingway,

I think he might be over rated in terms of message. But I think it would be hard to over rate his writing. Hemmingway and Saul Bellow have added a lot to my life. Tom Robbins is a lot of fun. I think his weirdness pushes a lot of people away from his books. They see what the book is about and just cannot imagine they would enjoy reading it.

definitely agree

about now just getting noticed and that does get annoying sometimes.

I put “Because of the times” first on my list, but I would say it’s a toss up between “Aha Shake Heartbreak” and their newest “Only by Night”, for me it just depends on the mood I’m in.

by I need more Esteban on Feb 17, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The live tour after Youth and Young Manhood was their peak in our opinion

Live versions of California Waiting, Wicker Chair and Joe’s Head were all the best I’d ever hear/heard out of them.

Aha Shake Heartbreak was a great album, but the tour was kinda lame, too concern about designer tank tops and fingernail painting we figure.

Because of the Times was underrated, maybe it was cool to see in the UK, no one seemed to give a shit here.

Only by Night is okay, not bad, but definitely is over ‘produced’/marketed, the springsteen-type ripoff thing is cool, but “sex on fire” could be the most lame ass, bullshit song title ever.

Tuesday's list

Over rated – Prince. For decades I have been hearing about how Prince is a musical genius. Where are all those secretly great Prince songs that show his genius? Prince is unique, and not bad at all, but that won’t get you to "genius."

Under rated – Champaign. Every single person in the world loves Champaign. That is not in dispute. What makes Champaign under rated is that we think we can only drink it once or twice a year. A good bottle of Champaign can easily be found for under fifteen dollars. We should stop the insanity. Life is too short.

Properly rated – Boston. Not as good as New York. Much better than Atlanta. Not as cool as Toronto but much closer. More interesting and less nasty than Chicago. Kicks the crap out of Dallas. These things are generally accepted for the truisms they are.

Having lived in the Greater Toronto Area for more than 6 years… well, it’s nice, but it’s not Boston. I’m not even that big of a Boston fan. Toronto has enough culture and “diversity” to make its residents feel cool, but compared to a Chicago or Boston, it doesn’t, and certainlly isn’ t anywhere close to the same league as New York, Paris, London, Berlin, etc. There’s more good art/music in one week in New York City than there is in a year in Toronto. Maybe a slightly exaggeration. Frankly, Montreal, Vancouver, and maybe also Ottawa are all superior Canadian cities.

Toronto is high on one list though: things white people like (although that goes for most of Canada).

I haven't been to Toronto in about 15 years,

but I loved it when I was there. I’ll defer to you here. I only knew it as a visitor.

My three favorite mid-sized North American cities that I either lived in or spent a good amount of time visiting are Portland, Quebec City & Louisville. I’d be happy to settle down in any of these cities. Unfortunately my wife would veto Quebec (“It’s too cold!”) and Louisville (“It too southern!”). I liked Nashville a lot also, but I was only there for two days. Cleveland and Columbus were both nicer than I expected them to be.

Paris is clearly the best city in the world. No need to debate the point. If I had the money and opportunity I’d pack my bags today. Lyon and Strasbourg would punch my ticket also.

The only place I have lived that I absolutely hated was Lexington, KY.

She’s alright, but her performance in Phantom Menace really blew it for me. What terrible acting.

And yes, Emmanuelle Chrique is in fact, smokin’.

Among general Royals fanbase

Current Royals on the 40-man roster.

Over – Ross Gload, Mike Jacobs, Willie Bloomquist, Kyle Farnsworth, Joakim Soria (I like him, but the glorification of the 1-inning role is almost exactly that), Horacio Ramirez, Miguel Olivo, Tony Pena (by a bit), Coco Crisp, Mark Teahen (by a HUUUUGE margin)
Under – Kila Ka’ahue, Alberto Callaspo (slightly), Mike Aviles (based on last year), Esteban German, David DeJesus, Kyle Davies, John Bale, Ron Mahay, Henry Barrera (most people don’t know who he is….that qualifies as completely underrated), Jimmy Gobble, Devon Lowery, Julio Pimentel, Robinson Tejeda, Doug Waechter, Brayan Pena, Mario Lisson (again, most don’t know), Mitch Maier
Correct – John Buck, Alex Gordon (could shift to over or under very soon – underrated based on last season alone), Ryan Shealy, Gil Meche, Brian Bannister, Neal Musser, Joel Peralta, Shane Costa, Billy Butler, Luke Hochevar, Zack Greinke

….Most players begin the season underrated, I think, because of the relatively high # of Rule 5 protections, Minor League guys, and low-key acquisitions (like Waechter) with some upside.

Gload and Pena….How could anyone think Pena is good?

by I need more Esteban on Feb 17, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Some fans haven’t completely comprehended how truly awful his 2008 was, even in those 200-something PA’s. Some people still think he deserves to be a backup MIF, and if he could revert to his (paltry) 2007 form, all would be fine and dandy. His Minor League numbers are awful. He’s a good defender, yes, but there’s no offensive upside there. Only embarrassment. 2007 was a statistical outlier based on luck and the fact that he “beat the book.” It’s an anomaly that won’t happen again. Batting average isn’t everything, as well.

As for Gload….another message board-ite told me that, at a game, he overheard someone refer to him as the next George Brett. Some fans still value his grit-tasticness and think that the empty .300 batting average is an asset.

It was rerun on 29 in KC

At least that’s where I first watched it, I don’t remember if it was over yet, but it was definitely the 90s. It wasn’t the same without Phil, but it did have Putty in season 5. Currently, it is the only show I have on DVD, but that’s mainly because all episodes of Arrested Development and Firefly are on Hulu. Scrubs and Seinfeld run four or five episodes a day on numerous channels.

30 Rock is like NewsRadio in a lot of ways...

but less constrained since it isn’t a stationary camera show. Also a lot like Mary Tyler Moore in that it leaves the workplace to go to Liz’s apartment quite a bit (especially this season).

Jack Donaghy is Jimmy James, Kenneth is Matthew, Tracy and Jenna are sort of like Bill McNeill, Liz Lemon is Dave with a little Lisa…

I'd say 30 Rock is less sitcomy than NR was

and better written…

also, the Foley guy (dude from Kids in the Hall) wasn’t really that funny as a straight man

different era

30 Rock is easy to get behind, but I figured you of all people would go against he pop choice

the cast of NR was way underrated realtive to 30 Rock. I like Tina Fey alright, but she is one of the most overrated actresses/writers of our period. I like 30 Rock because it rachets down her pretentions, though.

Foley was a talented guy, and right for the cast with too many other “overractors,” Jimmy, Bill, and Matthew (remember when Andy Dick didn’t make you renounce God on sight?)
