Sweeney has apparently forgotten...
…that he pretty much definitely used steroids, HGH and various horse amphetamines.

Sweeney is 35?
I thought he was much older. At 35 he should have like 12 more years in him.
Pecota, watch over us.
I don't like Sweeney
Always seemed like a Steve Garvey-type hypocrite to me.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
At least Sweeney gave us a good barometer by which to judge these guys.
Steroids is a 6mph difference and worth 20 HR per season according to him.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
If he denied it, he must have used
The only thing which could have been more damning is if he hadn’t spoken about it at all.

One day he will take his head out of his ass
I’m a natural born Cynic, but he has always seemed a little fake to me. Can’t put my finger on it.

No idea where this stuff comes from
Sweeney is basically one of the nicest guys in professional sports and has been his entire career. He’s a devout Christian who really takes the love and kindness message of that religion to heart (and I’m an agnostic). He’s a squeaky clean, good clubhouse guy who even learned Spanish so he could talk to all of his teammates. He’s a genuine good guy who doesn’t deserve any of the shit that some Royals fans randomly and bizarrely throw at him.
And I’m not saying this because I’m some kind of fawning fanboy. Sweeney was never my favorite Royal. He was a good player and a nice guy, that’s it. And then he fell victim to a chronic back injury, which essentially ended his career. He was not a great player. But he’s always been a very good person. I think you cynicism is misplaced here. I’m a cynic too, but my cynicism is usually based in something, not just pulled out of my arse.

Fair enough
Like i say, i have no real basis for it. And its not even that i dislike the guy, because i don’t. I guess i am always suspicous of those guys who are whiter than white and squeaky clean, and more importantly, know it and don’t mind saying so.
He’s a nice guy, he has a strong faith. All power to him, it just tires when it is rammed down your throat constantly by people, himself included.

I think he has a right to talk about his faith
I don’t think that’s ramming it down your throat. Now, if he’s frequently telling you how your only path to happiness or a good life is to give yourself to Jesus Christ, then that’s too much. Sure, I find lots of God references to be annoying, but I don’t think it’s forceful unless he’s proselytizing.
And none of us knows Sweeney. It could all be an act and he’s really a mean spirited prick in private. But when all of the evidence points to him being a genuine nice guy, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.

Naivety, thy name is NYRoyal
don’t you know that all us Christians are all a bunch of science-denying, homophobic, racist, Republican hypocrites? Many of us don’t even live near large cities.
The only real hard decision we ever face is whether to go a KKK meeting or the local planning session for the Great Patriarcal Conspiracy.

If one is looking for reasons to dislike Sweeney
You have to look hard. The only thing I could find was his anti-stem cell research commercials. I haven’t asked him about his feelings on evolution; I don’t want to know.
Everyone has their quirks. George Brett is a good friend (or at least was a good friend) of Rush Limbaugh. Nobody’s perfect.

He did
Have quite an increase in performance in 1999, and according to Rick Reilly, that’s all the evidence we need to convict him. I await Sweeney’s apology.

But did he mean it? Did he pause and take a drink of water while he tried to choke out a tear
or refrain a smirk? Only then will we know if he was truthful and honest.

Wow, where's all the hate coming from?
I guess we’ve all grown cynical. Too nice? You must be faking it…

"Beginning when his neck and back began bothering him in 2002, Sweeney said teammates would tell him he should take a certain illegal substance,"

I've always been suspicious
of people who wear their faith on their sleeve. (I don’t mean Christians in general, just the few that overdo it in public to the point that they doth protest too much.) I don’t know Sweeney personally, of course, and I don’t know whether he did roids or not. But there’s something about the guy (or at least the public image that he shows) that always rubbed me as phony, like Puckett and Garvey turned out to be.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.
I don't believe Sweeney is a fake at all.
He seems very sincere in his religion, and almost everyone that comes into personal contact with him seems to hold him with high regard.
I just think he’s not the brightest tool in the shed, and takes his fundamental religious beliefs to an over-bearing level.

I am one of those people
who does not believe that Sweeney is a fake.
He’s kind of in a tricky position, though. In general, Catholics are criticized for not evangelizing enough – especially compared to many Protestant groups. But because of Sweeney’s fame, his efforts to evangelize more are taken as “shoving his Catholicism down people’s throats.” If he was just some dude working in a college parish, he’d be seen as a really great, enthusiastic man of fiery faith and conviction. But since he’s a baseball player, those qualities are seen as a bad thing.
Personally, I hope he continues his public ministry after he’s out of baseball. He has had a pretty huge impact on my own faith life, so it hurts a little to see people bashing him all the time.
WTF, self?
