The Nationals have precious little reason

to start Odie Perez when they’ve got a lot of young arms competing for spots. I doubt he’d command much at all at the deadline.

He had a surprising adequate season last year. Hooray.

Stathead, Zack Greinke fan, and Rock Band 2 singer extraordinaire.

wait, I thought this post was about Odalis Perez, not Ron Mahay

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.

Har har

Mahay did have some trade value, by the way.

and he wasn't traded

predicatably, the Phillies (led by Pat GIllick, one of the most overrated GMs of our time), are the ones that wanted him. Can’t believe the Astros weren’t in on that.

I gather that Bowden is now part of a criminal investigation

Something about payoffs to Latin American trainers or agents. Apparently his behavior is being looked at going all the way back to the mid-1990’s.

Being a Reds fan I’ve kept up with Bowden news over the years and this sounds entirely likely. His nickname among Reds fans, given to him by Marty Bennenman, is Leather Pants Vampire. He just has no concept of truthfulness, or honesty. His moral compass has two directions, “I can get away with this” vs. “I probably will get caught.”

I think if anyone wanted to write a book about the decline in the sense of personal responsibility in the U.S. over the last few generations they could write a case-study chapter on Bowden easily.

Someone on Baseball Think Factory had the great comment

I’m paraphrasing: “In the new Moneyball movie, Jim Bowden should have a small role and be played by Steve Carrell.”
