Spring Training Game Three Open Thread

The Royals take on the hated Giants today, "at" the Giants. Have any of you ever been to SF? I never have... closest I've ever got is... Yosemite I guess.

It's probably the most major US city I've never visited. Really, only Philly comes close.

What's the most major US city that you've never visited?

that;s an odd one to have missed

i didn’t really like it the first ten or so times I was there, but then again, they were all mainly drives to an airport

now, I miss random trips to it

One of the best walking towns in the country

So many little hidden gems that are walkable or are easily connected by public transportation. Wrigleyville, Fullerton/Depaul area, Northwestern area, different slices of the loop, lakewall area south of downtown, and on and on.

Different types of cities

Boston and Phiily are closer related than Miami and New Orleans. Boston and Philly seem to have pulses to their old town areas, somewhat due to the historical significance, but of course New Orleans has the staccato of the Quarter. Miami is hard to concentrate on, so much to focus on below the shoulders.

In both Philly and Boston I purposely got myself “lost” on foot just so I could wander without any real purpose other to get a feel for the city. Great experiences.

I don't travel...yet.

Someday, I’ll add more cities to this list:
Chicago
DC
Dallas
Pittsburgh (twice, but only for a few hours both times)
Minneapolis, if that counts as major.
Denver
…does KC count?

Hm. I think that’s all of ‘em. I think I’ve been to almost as many National Parks as I have been to major cities…that’s not a bad thing though.

Royals all-time record against the Giants

6 wins, 3 losses.

Memorable games:

Sweeney singles to cap comeback, bad back slapped in celebration. June 15, 2003.

Carrasco tosses a CG five-hitter. June 7, 2005. I was at this one, surrounded by people in the bleachers asking, “Who is this guy?”

DDJ makes little Cy fly, Royals come back from 7-run deficit. June 22, 2008.

Cactus league record

8 wins, 5 losses, 1 tie.

This picture

is from a bloop double down the right field line by Angel Berroa, which started the rally, as I recall. Aaron Guiel reached with 2 outs, and then Sweeney lined a 3-2 pitch on a trolley over the second baseman’s head, scoring Guiel from first with a single. (Guiel was running with the pitch, which helped).

The game was played on Father’s Day, as I recall. Remember it like it was yesterday…

Will, I’ve been to SanFran once – when I was 8 or 9 with my family. We went to Candlestick and watched a Giants/Reds game. Pete Rose was the Reds manager – he got ejected from the game. The most memorable part of the game – it was Dave Dreveckey’s 1st come-back game from his major arm surgery/injury. I recall the Giants winning something like 5-4. Dreveckey’s next game – I think was at Houston – is when he blew out the arm again and it ended up getting amputated.

I love the Bay Area and prefer it over So. Cal.

All though Mark Twain is right. The coldest August day I have ever spent was in San Fransisco. When that fog moves in it feels like someone just tossed a cold wet blanket on top of you. I think the only two major cities that I have not been in are Dallas and New Orleans.

I like Chicago now, but it took me several trips in and out of the city to feel that way. I love the Shed, Navy Pier, Sue at the Museum, and the old Marshall Fields. The food has to rank right up there with the best in the country. Go Bears….
