Goldman: Even Small Markets Should Be Buying
(BP Premium content)
Discussing the glut of high-quality unsigned free agents and the potential impact on ticket revenues they can create, Goldman says:
"Whatever his limitations, Dunn trumps a Mike Jacobs at first base or any corner outfielder or designated hitter the Twins might deploy, for example. He beats using a Nyjer Morgan or Austin Kearns or Cody Ross or Nelson Cruz. As the season goes on, as the economy continues to struggle, and as these players continue to make outs, the dedicated fan will ask, 'Why are we watching these guys when we could have been watching those guys?' The casual fan will simply stay home."

I think it's generally a good point...
but I don’t know that anyone (especially a casual fan) is going to be running out to the park just so he can check out Adam Dunn. Don’t get me wrong…he’s a good player, but not at the top of my list of “guys who can single-handedly put butts in the seats.” I think signing Dunn would result in increased attendance, but much more because it would make the Royals a better overall team (with a better record)…rather than Dunn wowing the kids with his ability to take that borderline pitch for a ball, stroke the occasional long homer, and cover approximately 5 square feet of RF or LF.

But some might be asking
Why are we watching Michael Wuertz when we could be watching Kyle Farnsworth?

It's the winning, stupid
People will come out to watch a team that is winning. If the Royals are the “feel good story” this year, this town will explode, especially given the “economic environment”.
That said, I’m not sure there aren’t better ways to spend that money. Ben Sheets perhaps, and a better SS/2B probably makes us better than the addition of Dunn to our “1B of beer-league softballers”. Now, if Dunn looked Marissa Miller and could still hit 30 HRs in a bikini, that might, in and of itself, bring people out to the park.
another "it doesn't matter" story
I agree with the article, now’s a good time to be a buyer. But, the reality is, we were already a buyer and emptied the wallet. Even today on mlb.com, DM said quite specifically that “we’re done”.

The only legit "revenue generator"
as Scott Boras likes to put it is probably Manny Ramirez.
The end.
