Hey, I don't have a clue, but that's what the internet is all about

Easy than figuring out this Pythagenpat thing out, anyway…

I’m assuming this all means “right now,’ now "potential”

Position Players:

Best power: MIke Jacobs
Best contact hitter: Alberto Callaspo
Best defender.. relative to position, or in general? I’m assuming the later
   -Infield: Aviles
   -Outfield: CoCo Crisp
Best arm… Do you mean strongest? Or best at throwing guys out?
   -Infield: don’t konw
   -Outfield: Guillen
Best speed: CoCo Crisp
Best base runner: CoCo Crisp
Best strike zone discipline: Callaspo or DDJ

I’m not going to further embarrass myself by discussing the pitching stuff

I couldn't decide on plate discipline

Callaspo’s has masterful discernment, but isn’t quite as “patient” as DDJ, whatever that means

Sort of a funny questionairre, since the SS is (unless you’re the Yankees) pretty much always going to be the best defender in the IF, and the CF in the OF.

I was going to do a big piece on Hit Tracker and the Royals, and have it mostly done, but Greg has put so much out there, it seems like child play now. If people still want to see it, I can still put it out there. I think Jacobs will still have the best power numbers, but if Gordon can just add his 2007 power against lefties to his 2008 power against righties…

callaspo

seems like he doesn’t swing at all if it’s a ball, but if it’s in the strike zone, he’s hacking whether it’s a “good” strike to swing at or not. guess that’s not the worst thing in the world since his contact skills are so awesome, but it’s kind of annoying when he’s in a cold streak. he could probably be an on-base monster if he would be a little more picky with the pitches early in the count.

Good call

He avoids strikeouts, but he doesn’t take a particularly high percentage of bad pitches. He’s a contact guy.

Pitchers:

Best fastball: Cruz
Best curveball: Soria (slow, rainbow curve) Meche (more of a traditional curveball)
Best slider: Greinke

Position Players:

Best power: Jacobs now Gordon later
Best contact hitter: Callaspo
Best defender…
   -Infield: Aviles
   -Outfield: DDJ
Best arm…
   -Infield: Gordon
   -Outfield: Guillen
Best speed: Crisp just pure speed, down the baseline maybe Aviles
Best base runner: Teahen
Best strike zone discipline: Crisp

Pitchers:

Best fastball: Tejeda
Best curveball: Soria
Best slider: Greinke
Best changeup: Soria now Greinke later
Best command: Soria

Greinke is just now starting to use the change. The kid is a freak and will probably establish a 70 change up by the time it is all done.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

hmm

if Zack develops a 70 changeup…he’ll be the best pitcher in the game.

Zack IS awesome

I’m going to post mine before peering at anyone else’s list. Then, I’ll compare.

(For fun, and because I have some time on my hands, I’ll compare players on the probable 25-man roster and players throughout the Minor League organization. I’m still going to evaluate the 25-man based on probability for 2009 alone (which is then based largely on my own gut prediction).

Position Players:

Best power: Alex Gordon (the potential is still greater than that of Jacobs, and he could very well realize that potential this year) / Kila Ka’aihue (tremendous slugger, primarily HR-hitter, but could slug .500 in his sleep…something that cannot yet be said about Moose)
Best contact hitter: Alberto Callaspo (undoubtedly, although ironically there are quite a few on the projected 25-man, which is mystifying considering our offense is still as bad as it is) / Eric Hosmer (I see him as a contact-first/power-second kinda player…his willingness to go opposite-field contradicts his swing, which looks more power-oriented)
Best defender….
-Infield: Alex Gordon (the potential still outweighs that of Aviles, IMO) / Mario Lisson (it appeared he didn’t miss a beat after switching to shortstop)
-Outfield: Coco Crisp (based on potential, position, and importance of position) / Jose Duarte (I’ve heard rants and raves)
Best arm…
-Infield: Alex Gordon (without a doubt) / Mike Moustakas (without a doubt)
-Outfield: Jose Guillen (location hurts him, but power is overwhelming) / Jose Duarte (I’m basing this on BA, alone)
Best speed: Coco Crisp (although one could make a legitimate argument for Bloomquist, although he’s a bit older than Crisp, overall) / Derrick Robinson (Ortiz hasn’t shown the efficiency and raw SB totals, thus far)
Best base runner: Willie Bloomquist (complete shot in the dark guess, here) / Jason Taylor (man, you HAVE to give it up to a man of his heavy-setitude who can post a 74% success rate in a pitching-oriented league. Reefer madness! [OK, was that out of line?])
Best strike zone discipline: David DeJesus (I base this on several things….., honorable mention to Gordon and Callaspo) / Kila Ka’aihue (without question), although strong cases could be made for Joshua Johnson and Jason Taylor….although Taylor borders on passiveness, it’s amazing Johnson gets walked as much as he does with a player of his skill set (no power, etc.)

Pitchers:

Best fastball: Zack Greinke (he can basically do whatever he wants with it) / Carlos Rosa (although haven’t witnessed it, much, up close)
Best curveball: Joakim Soria (without question, but give honorable mention to Meche and Davies) / Daniel Gutierrez (have heard rants and raves)
Best slider: Zack Greinke (I’d have to check this) / Henry Barrera (Going with B.A.)
Best changeup: Kyle Davies (Greinke is close) / Blake Wood (B.A.)
Best command: Zack Greinke / Rowdy Hardy (without question)

Good call on Kila

I totally forgot about him. He could be considered best plate discipline on the ML roster. I read that Fortuna has a pretty nasty fastball in the minor league system.

Best Curveball in the minors might go to Sample.
From what I’ve read Herrera might have the biggest upside of all the minor league pitchers even though he doesn’t possess the most projectability.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

insert joke about the cause of Taylor's passiveness

Crisp is the best baserunner

and Teahen had a bad year, but the numbers back up him and DDJ (who also had a bad year) being very good baserunners in other years — BP’s EqBRR, Bill James’ system, and Rally all agree.

Teahen's base running

Clearly he’s no base stealer. But the stats and scouts agree that Teahen is a great base runner in all non-base stealing ways. When the stats guys and the tools-based guys agree, there’s usually something real there.

Are they watching every play of every game?

Without hit f/x I just don’t know how a stat could accurately calculate baserunning. It is something that actually would have to be seen as opposed to devising a stat for it. 1st to third, second to home, which fielder is making the throw, what was the speed at which the ball was hit, etc.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

Fortuna...

lot to like, but i’d be hesitant to say he has the best fastball yet. right now I’d take Cortes’, Rosa’s, and Juan Abreu’s fastball before his. maybe Gutz’s as well.

Founder of the Johnny Giavotella fan club.

by doublestix on Mar 14, 2009 12:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that completely

I thought Fortuna was a real stretch for best fastball in the organization. BA says Rosa. I would have said Cortes. Both are good choices. You’ve got to take velocity, control and movement into account. Maybe Fortuna will develop the best fastball in the organization, but I don’t think he’s there yet.

I went off projectability

and I threw Rosa out since he played in the majors last year. Ya I know he still qualifies under scouting rules but I mostly wanted to toss someone else out there. Cortes, Wood, Sample all have good fastballs but all lack control too.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
