Southside Sox posted this article and I have to say... rather depressing. According to this, DM turned a log-jam at first base into a cluster-f*ck by signing the worst statistical first baseman in the AL Central. Can someone please put a positive spin on this? ...... wait, wait.... Gload's numbers are listed! What the hell!?

Ugh

It’s fairly evident Moore places very little emphasis – if any – on WAR, VORP, etc. I think it’s fair to assume he knows what they are, and maybe vaguely what they entail. But he places little to almost no emphasis on them. Otherwise, we wouldn’t see such abysmal (negative) #s for Gload, Pena, etc. And we wouldn’t see as many multiyear signings of below-zero players take place (Gload, Guillen, etc.).

I don't mind Mike Jacobs

for the simple fact that sometimes the threat of a deep ball is just as impacting in a lineup as a total HR count at the end of a season. The Royals simply did not have a power threat in the middle of the lineup, so his signing didn’t bother me too much. However, I did not realize his numbers were this poor in contrast with our division rivals.

The "Bravest Way to Build a Baseball Team" guy

Shank, I think his name is, who is a Braves lackey, made a real point when Moore was hired that Moore didn’t know what VORP was. He meant it as a compliment.

I think it was here, RR posted something about it right when DMGM got hired

I’ll look it up tomorrow if no one else does or recalls this

Positive spin

The only positive spin is that maybe Jacobs will perform much better than every system (and his defensive history) projects for him. It’s not likely, but it’s something to dream about. Hope is a good thing.

Yeah

That was my reaction… I’m hoping someone on here can make a case for Jacobs’ upside because I’d like to think that this isn’t a major weakness for us.

Let see

he doesn’t walk, hit left-handed pitching, barely hit better than Mark Grudzelaniak last season, and he makes Billy Butler look like an everyday first baseman.

How would he not be a major weakness?
