seems like an a modest "unleashing"
“Now, with more innings, we’re going to be more aggressive with him,” Hillman says. “We’ll let the situation dictate, but maybe there will be times this year when we ask him to get four or five outs.”

I’ll set the over/under on the number of times this happens at 3.5

103.5 times

sounds a bit excessive.

When He Pitches

The 6th inning, coming in with the bases loaded and the Royals leading, we’ll know Hillman gets it.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

that won't happen in the next 10 years

any manager

maybe ever. unless the game changes drastically.

6th is pushing it

because, by the same logic, the heart of the order will be batting again

in the 7th, i think it makes more sense

by royalsreview on Mar 16, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, that kind of situation in the 7th, with a close game would be a very high leverage situation

And I bet he doesn’t come into a game before the 8th even once this season. I doubt he’ll ever come in with no outs in the 8th.

Yes, The 6th

Inning was a bit hyperbolic, but you get my point.

You Can't Win

A game in the 6th inning, but you can lose it.

In the very least

…a manager shouldn’t hesitate to bring his best setup man (aka, his second best reliever) into the game in 6th inning in that kind of scenario.

Although I'm sure it probably happened

I don’t remember Howser ever bringing Quiz in in the 6th,

This space for rent.

by jonfmorse on Mar 16, 2009 2:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure it was very rare

I quick look through Baseball Reference found that there was at least one. On July 22, 1983, Howser brought Quiz into a game against the Yankees in the 6th inning with two outs. Quiz finished the inning, allowing no runs. He inherited a lead, but blew it in the 9th. He went on to pitch 10th and 11th innings (for 5.1 IP total), eventually getting the Win. It’s kind of interesting to compare then and now. First, no closer would be called on to come into a game in the 6th. Second, no closer would be called on to pitch 5+ innings. Third, Quiz was given the next day off, but then was called on to pitch on the 24th (1 ip), 25th (3 ip) and 27th (3 ip) of that month.

the interesting thing is

when is hillman going to do this at all?

is it simply going to be when he hasn’t pitched in awhile, or when the setup man pitched two straight days before or if its a 1-run lead against a good team?

i have no idea, but i’m guessing its the first

by royalsreview on Mar 16, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I read it as they want to get him closer to 80-90 innings

But not necessarily over more appearances.

realistically speaking

Any Of The

Above would be an improvement; baby steps.

I think he'll do it in more Royals-up-by-1 8th inning situations

(in situations where Hillman would have otherwise been willing to bring him in in the 9th)

by NYRoyal on Mar 16, 2009 1:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it means

Soria will get in during the 8th if/when tying/winning runs are on base. I doubt he starts an 8th inning once this year, save the possibility of a late September game when we are leading the division by 1 game and clinging to a lead of 5-4 vs 2nd place team…

BOOM! ROASTED!

by GoBabies!! on Mar 16, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The concept is positive, but Hillman's description of it is just the same, traditional closer usage
“Now, with more innings, we’re going to be more aggressive with him,” Hillman says. “We’ll let the situation dictate, but maybe there will be times this year when we ask him to get four or five outs.”

That isn’t unleashing your closer. That isn’t using your closer in an untraditional way. That isn’t using your closer in a way that maximizes leverage. That’s basically adding a few more 4 and 5-out Saves to the standard 3-out saves. This is a positive thing, but it is sounds like a very minor tweak.

In a perfect world, the rest of the guys in our bullpen are so good

That we don’t even need Soria to pitch more than 1 inning very often

realistically speaking

Soria has become expendable

The General Theory of Royaltivity

by kabrink on Mar 16, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Another thing that will affect how often Moore uses Soria outside of the 9th inning is...

…the performance of the rest of the Royals bullpen, particularly the setup men. If Hillman feels very confident in two or three other relievers who can handle the 8th in a close game, then he probably won’t feel motivated to put Soria into a game before the 9th. If Hillman feels like he can’t really trust those guys, then he’ll be more willing to use Soria.

I Feel Better

About the pen this year than ever before. We’re in a position to stash multiple MLB arms in Omaha, both starters and relievers, and the guys in our MLB pen will be making real money for the most part. Red Lobster, baby! That’s gotta help.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Mar 16, 2009 1:37 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

So, basically it's like this

If Professor Farnsworth can’t get the job done, we’ll see Soria for extra outs, not Cruz.

by AxDxMx on Mar 16, 2009 4:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it is that simple

I think other setup men will be tried for the 8th inning as well. It’s not like Soria would become the default 8th inning choice and rack up a bunch of 4-6 out Saves. Cruz, Tejeda and Mahay (if healthy) I believe would also be given the opportunity to primary 8th inning setup men. I just think this means that Hillman will be less hesitant to use Soria in the 8th inning if the setup men are gassed and/or ineffective.

I created a spreadsheet on Soria's usage last year

I need to put the finishing touches on it before putting it in a separate post.

I created it working under the general assumption that the Royals could’ve won more games, but weren’t using Soria in “fireman” type situations. I looked at every loss from the 6th inning on to see what happened. I’d thought that some of the long losing streaks could’ve been stopped by bringing in Soria earlier.

Turns out, the problem last year wasn’t bullpen usage. The problem was that the offense was horrible — the Royals were down several runs by the time the starter would exit in the 6th or 7th inning, so bringing in Soria earlier wouldn’t have helped much in terms of wins and losses last year. (It also helped out that Ramirez, Nunez, and to a lesser extent Mahay were lights out, so that there weren’t many games blown by the bullpen)

by Top Ramen on Mar 16, 2009 9:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I should add

Hearing that Soria will be used for more innings is good news. Combine that with the “we realize that we need to take more pitches”, and I’m starting to wonder who replaced the coaching staff.

by Top Ramen on Mar 16, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

One question on your diagnosis of the "problem"
he problem was that the offense was horrible — the Royals were down several runs by the time the starter would exit in the 6th or 7th inning

Wouldn’t that also imply that the starters were pretty horrible at times as well?

Whew

For a second I read that as “Royals to release Soria”

A simple way to unleash Soria

when the Royals are up by 1 or 2 runs, bring him in in the 8th. There you go. ONLY use him for a 1 inning save with a three-run lead if you know it wouldn’t effect his availablility the next day.

That would up his innings and leverage, and thus his value. I’m sure Hillman/Moore know this, since they’ve surely reak The Book, and not reading a leading piece of research in one’s one field would be a sign of willful ignorance/professional negligence.

Use the pr0f3550r for some of those 1 innings, 3-run saves. Even he can manage that most of the time, and maybe it will make some idiot general manager excited enough to trade for him. Do the same thing with Mahay. Maybe HoRam, too. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary to Driveline Mechanics and elsewhere since sometime in 2008.

not exactly "unleashing" in my book

to me, unleashing = starting rotation. But getting more IPs this year may be a step towards that dream.

by Royal Revival on Mar 16, 2009 11:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let's hope Soria doesn't blow a lead

the first few times that he pitches more than one inning, because if he does I doubt that they will use him like this ever again

Waiting for April.

Any extra Soria innings would help.

Hopefully Soria is up for it. I remember a game last year when he told the coaching staff he wasn’t available after pitching more than one inning the night before. I don’t remember if he had pitched in previous games prior to that but it seemed like he limited himself a tad last year also. They might want to limit him at the start of the season because it doesn’t seem like he is getting much work thanks to the WBC.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
