Royals becoming fascists?
Star article describes the R's increased K-bility this season. Of course, they also point out that the Rays led the league in Ks two years ago and finished last in ERA. Perhaps it precipitated the jump, though.

I've been thinking of writing an article comparing
what the Rays did to make the “leap” and the Royals, using Matthew Carruth’s study from the recent THT annual…
Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.

I did not realize
that last year’s team set the franchise record for most strikeouts in a season. I’m pretty amazed that no bigger deal was made of that at the end of the year.
I guess we were all too busy basking in the glow of our fourth-place finish.

until I decided to go with Hal’s immortal rant.

Oh yes...
Click on “Hal McRae” in my sig whenever you want. I embedded the link there long ago. I believe it is the No. 1 rant of all time according to the “Best Damn Sports Show” or “Best Damn Show of Sports” or whatever it is on Fox Sports.

It’s an interesting YouTube link because I think McRae actually says “kamDqL-AGzI” in the course of his tirade.

That's a big part of the reason I love it...
It’s almost impossible to decipher exactly what was said between “beeps,” the location of the microphone, and the sound bouncing off the sweet cinder block walls (let’s hope that rehabbing the manager’s office area was part of the $250M in renovations).
I do know that Hal asks, “You think I’m a goddamned fool?” No, Hal. No, I don’t. Just don’t throw your phone at my head, please.
Man, see what managing the Royals can do to you?

What's really funny
Is that it was a perfectly legit question. Why the hell wouldn’t you pinch hit Brett for Keith Miller?

And…
I have to say that embedding a link in a sig is very savvy, as SB Nation doesn’t provide the usual editing tools for sigs.

Oh, I'm far from...
Internet/computer savvy. I have NO idea how I managed to get that to work. I do remember blacking out for a moment while editing my profile, and when I came to, the link was there.
I liken it to Frank the Tank when he debates James Carville in “Old School.”

I've always thought that most people misunderstood Crash's comment
He said that a pitcher shouldn’t try to strike everybody out. That doesn’t mean that strikeouts aren’t usually the best possible outcome for a pitcher. It just means that the best way to pitch isn’t to attempt strikeouts which often leads to nibbling, trying to make the perfect pitch, overthrowing and other bad habits. Instead, pitchers should trust their stuff, throw the right pitch and not think that every thrown ball has to avoid contact.
In fact, I think this is what the philosophy of teaching batters to “pitch to contact” is about. It’s about being aggressive and throwing strikes. It isn’t about teaching pitchers to induce contact. It’s teaching them how to pitch right and not be afraid of the strike zone and things that can happen when you throw strikes.

Other than Bannister, it seems Moore has emphasized obtaining pitchers with exemplary K/9 ratios. Farnsworth. Meche. Cruz. Dotel. Et al. In fact, most of his acquisitions – other than complete duds like Nomo & Tomko, had a very good chance of finishing with at least 2:1 K:BB ratios. Few, if any, pitchers have been notoriously wild. Very few overdominant pitchers (MacDougal, Burgos) and very few underdominant pitchers (like May & Anderson). Just 92-94mph., inside the strike zone, pitchers. For the most part, he has ignored the ‘lefty must be in rotation’ dogma, as well, so points to him in that regard.

Heck we don't even know if Dayton wanted Banny
Maybe Banny was what the Mets offered for Ambiorix Burgos, and Dayton jumped at it like anyone with half a brain would.

Bale
HoRam

True
But I actually thought Bale was a reasonable option for the rotation, at the time, given his K-rate from ‘07, his ability to work effective multiple innings, and his velocity (also: see his BABIP, which was abnormally high, then [it was also bizarre-ly high in ’08, as well]). And Bale wouldn’t have been in the rotation much longer, at all, after that “incident” took place. Then, we went with
The HoRam talk is just that, at this point. I’ll believe it when he makes 8+ starts in the rotation.
De La Rosa was a decent option, too, I think. Definitely top 5 worthy, though that wasn’t saying much, at all.

If HoRam
starts the season in the rotation and isn’t actually one of the top 5 best pitchers on the team, then he is following the dogma, right?

What if Moore and Hillman think he's one of the 5 best starting pitchers on the team
(and/or they want Hochevar in Omaha for a while to pause his service clock so that they get another year of team control)

How long does Che
have to be down to pause the clock? If HoRam is ineffective there is a trade off at some point.
If HoRam IS one of the 5 best flat out, then it’s what they should do, for sure.

I don't know for sure
This is one of MLB’s byzantine rules and complicated formulas that they keep hidden from the prying eyes of fans. The short answer is something like a month or two. Given when he was called up last season, I think one month would do it.
If HoRam IS one of the 5 best flat out, then it’s what they should do, for sure.
Well, what I think is that they will conclude that he’s one of the 5 best for this team and this rotation. In addition to his limited gifts (perhaps low walks and high GB%), Moore and Hillman see a real value in mixing in a lefty starter. I think they believe that this “different look” will translate to more success than another righty would have. So I think they will likely conclude that both because he’s a lefty and because of his degree of talent, he’s one of the five best. The problem is that I think they are wrong about this. If’ I’m correct about that, then hopefully HoRam will quickly prove this, so that Moore and Hillman can make a change.

As NYRoyal has insinuated, and/or bluntly stated
It’s purely a hypothetical, at this point. Bale and De La Rosa (not to mention Perez) were worthy options, regardless of handedness. HoRam is a ‘sixth’ or ‘seventh’ option. Then, there’s the matter of when they pull the hook. And the matter of Hoch’s service time. (By the way, I get the feeling they’re doing this with Ka’aihue, as well).
