ST Game 6 Open Thread - Giants vs Royals

The Royals host the San Francisco Giants at Surprise Stadium, while with expectations newly raised by Joe Posnanski we all await a strikeout-laden performance by the Royals' pitching staff.

Matt Cain starts for the Giants against Horacio Ramirez for the Royals. Kevin Pucetas, Jack Taschner, and Brian Wilson are scheduled to relieve for the Giants. For the Royals: Kyle Davies, Jamey Wright, Julio Pimentel, and Heath Phillips.

Broadcast: the Royals radio network, MLB.com, and XM Radio channel 180.

MLB.com Gameday: here.

Recent action: the Royals defeated the Giants in Scottsdale last Friday, 6-1, as Xaq Greinke and six relievers limited the Giants to 5 hits. Matt Cain last pitched Thursday against the Dodgers, giving up 1 run in an inning and two thirds on a home run by Russell Martin. Horacio Ramirez last pitched in the Royals' Cactus League opener Wednesday against the Rangers; he got his work in.

Game notes: for the Giants, bench coach Ron Wotus will be acting as the skipper today while manager Bruce Bochy undergoes arthroscopic shoulder surgery. For the Royals, Billy Butler's availability for daring exploits on the basepaths is in doubt at this hour. He exited yesterday's game early when his hand swelled after having been struck by a pitch.

Fun fact: Ron Wotus has been the bench coach for the last three Giants managers, Dusty Baker, Felipe Alou, and Bruce Bochy.

Personal note: my step-daughter and one of Horacio Ramirez's cousins attended the same middle school, somewhere in viticultural Northern California.

You can be the Buck to my Olivo

In all seriousness, with you, Will and I we are getting a serious Royals blogging contingent in DC.

With the sorry state that the Nationals are in due to greed and overzealous management (i’m looking at you Jim Bowden) the time may be ripe to move in on this vulnerable stronghold, a la William Jennings Bryan and the Populist Party.

Waiting for April.

seriously

how horrible is Bowden?

he went from being a bad GM with a weird personal life (ok, a typical make in position of power personal life) to being a — allegedly — much worse

That said

As a GM, it must be really sad to feel compelled to commit extortion/bribery and the payoff is a C level prospect, a non-existent fan base and a guaranteed last place finish for like the next 5 years.

wtf was he thinking

I had really hoped

MLB would move the Expos to Portland and put it in the AL west. That way Pitt could go back to the NL East and all the divisions would be square again.

How did Rosa and Barrera pitch yesterday? I saw that they both went an inning

without any damage.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 2, 2009 12:52 PM EST reply actions

Barrera walked his first batter on a full count and then got the next three hitters on just 9 pitches. Rosa retired the side on 5 pitches, according to the play-by-play archived here.

They don’t always get the pitch counts right in spring training, but I don’t remember anything different from what’s there.

by 2X2L on Mar 2, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Good deal

I wonder if they will start Barrera in the BP in Omaha as opposed to Arkansas.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 2, 2009 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Gameday has Barrera’s inning slightly wrong. Wilson popped up on a 1-0 count, not on the first pitch, and Napoli struck out on a 3-2 pitch. So 17 pitches in all.

by 2X2L on Mar 2, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

And it’s way wrong for Rosa in the 8th.

Johnson grounded out to second on the 7th pitch of his at bat with a 3-2 count.

Sandoval also grounded out to second, apparently on the 3rd pitch of his at bat (but the LA play-by-play guys were hardly paying attention at this point, so I don’t really know).

And Conger grounded out to 1st on a 1-1 count.

So, 3 ground balls and no strikeouts on approximately 13 pitches.

I just think it will be cool

2K9 has “living rosters” so as the rosters are changed throughout the year, the game reflects those changes, as well as surprising performances by relatively unknown players.

I hope the GM mode is quality so that I can use it as evidence against moves that DM did or did not make.

Three things I want to see today

1. Complete Ho-Ram implosion – like 10 runs in 2/3 of an inning
2. Subsequent Davies domination – 3 IP, 5 K’s, 1 hit, no walks
3. I want to see a bench-clearing brawl, where Farnsworth runs from the bullpen to piledrive Jeremy Affeldt round 2.

Waiting for April.

by kcscoliny on Mar 2, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

Although many scorekeepers have become reluctant to charge an error in cases like this, the scoring rule says that an error can be charged if the play could have been made with ordinary effort.

So that was an error. On the scorekeeper.

by 2X2L on Mar 2, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

They seem to rarely call it an error

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 2, 2009 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

On a batted ball, yes, it has become common not to charge an error if the fielder just misses it, even if he’s standing right there. Don’t know why, other than that scorers nowadays don’t like to assess errors unless there’s really no alternative.

There is no alternative if a fielder misses a catchable throw, if runners advance because of the miss. Bowker got an error on a play like that on a pickoff attempt in the bottom of the 2nd.

So why one kind of missed catch is a hit and another’s an error, well, you’ll just have to ask the scorers. Makes no sense to me.
