Bill Simmons Endorses the 2009 Kansas City Royals
In his most recent podcast, Espn.com's world famous Sports Guy, Bill Simmons, after a 52-minute plus discussion with Football Post's Mike Lombardi - mostly about the coming NFL season and this off-season's NFL news (wherein Simmons and Lombardi heap adulation and praise upon the Kansas City Chiefs for "stealing" Matt Cassel), Simmons decided to become the 1st mainstream media member in nearly 20 years to openly endorse the Kansas City Royals. A shiny nickel for anyone who can name the last mainstream media member to openly endorse the Kansas City Royals. I don't know the answer to this trivia question - I'm actually curious.
http://sports.espn.go.com/stations/player?id=3946593
Anyway, go to approximately minute 52:20 for the following:
BS: I'm gonna go one further Mike Lombardi, not only do I think the Chiefs are a major sleeper at 100:1, I also like the Kansas City Royals.
ML: Now that I don't know - - I'm out of my league there . . . .
BS: Yeah, I know you don't know, I'm just saying -- this really -- you might be looking at the year of Ka - -
ML: The year of Kansas City?
BS: Yeah -- as, as a sport - - they might get an NBA team, the might have the Royals be making some noise, they might have the Chiefs with a huge comeback -- I'm telling you, watch out for Kansas City. All this stuff happens in -- in clumps. You look at what happened in Seattle last year, and it was like all the other stuff that happened just ended up submarining the Seahawks, it was like black cloud that just came over to them -- and you know, by -- by contrast, like, you see like the Patriots of 2002, kind of lifted the black cloud and opened the possiblities for everything else that happened in Boston. So that's my theory. I'm going to ride the Kansas City train.
ML: I like it.
I tell you what - I like it too.
I'm getting goosebumps.

Wasn't there a graph a couple of months ago
Showing the opposite?
When the Chiefs are good the Royals suck.
When the Royals are good the Chiefs suck.
I was pretty sure I saw that inverse relationship.

As a historical overview, its certainly true
Chiefs sucked in the 70’s and 80’s, just as the Royals were coming on. Chiefs got good in the 90’s while the Royals went in the tank.
Although in 2003, the Royals had a winning record and the Chiefs went 13-3

I believe the last media member
to endorse the KC Royals was Harold Reynolds. If memory serves, he picked up to win the Central in ’04 after our EPIC ’03 season.

Is KC talking of getting an NBA team again?
I haven’t heard of any rumors lately. If so, who would be coming.

odd scenario but very possible

I've heard a senario
where Sacramento moves to Anaheim and pushes the clippers out of the LA market. When it comes to NBA I’m way out of me league…

I've heard more talk
Of the NHL’s Islanders moving here.

Hmmm.
I don’t think Nassau Colleseum is getting replaced anytime soon and the Isles are the runt of the litter out here. It would sort of be a shame for them to move since there’s still a strong rivalry with the Rangers and there’s some history with the Isles with their 3 cups in the 80’s.
But they really do get lost in the shuffle of the NYC sports scene. I’d feel awful for Isles fans but I’d love to have the team. They’ve got a good youthful core but they also have an underachieving injury-prone goalie who just signed a 15-year contract…

From what I've read
When the Pens threatened to move, there was enormous public outcry. When the Predators made suggestions they would seek relocation, there was a surprisngly strong outcry. Now that rumors the Islanders might move have surfaced, there has been nary a peep.

they think is on the move? I haven’t heard that any of them are looking to relocate, to KC or otherwise.

Hornets and Kings are what I've heard.
Kings need a new arena, Hornets have an out clause if their attendance dips below a certain level and the state of Louisiana fails to pay them off.

I guess
Simmons identified like a dozen teams that he thought were either in, or about to be in fincancial straights in the NBA.
I think 13 teams are taking part of the NBA’s $200 BILLION line of credit.
They were talking about it on 810 this morning. He mentioned Kansas City repeatedly in this column as a likely destination for an NBA team

Simmons wrote a column the other day
on the financial state of the NBA and according to his sources “in the know” (whatever that means) there could be several franchises relocating in the next few years. Near the end of the column he lists potential movers and possible new locations under bullet point 4.

Didn't Joe Posnanski predict the Royals to wint he Central liike 7 years in a row before reality struck?
I’m a long-time Sports Guy fan, but given his knowledge of baseball, the Royals are truly screwed now.

I've always liked Simmons
He really did help invent this gossipy, snarky, ironic, and very personal style that’s currently so popular among the sports commentariat. And he’s often very funny. I really think of his Sports Guy column as humor first and serious sports analysis second.
His logic on this one, of course, is completely nuts, since the Chiefs have no effect whatsoever on the Royals, and neither does the NBA. But when a writer is as prolific as Simmons, you’re going to get some crapola mixed in with more interesting stuff, since he opines on almost everything. Most sportswriters have a much more limited focus than Simmons does.
One thing that bugs me about him is his emphasis on gambling. The guy’s clearly a ludopath, and I don’t like his bragging about trips to Vegas and putting down thousands of dollars on the Super Bowl; it encourages other people to want to do the same. It would be like a guy bragging about getting drunk all the time. Not that a little of either one is a bad thing, but in excess they’ll both wreck your life.
I bet his wife’s good-looking. Appearance seems to be important to Simmons.
By the way, I’m thrilled about Cassel and Vrabel. Now I’d trade down from the three spot for, say, two low firsts, or a low first and two seconds. I don’t think the huge guarantees that players picked very high get are worth the risk, and right now the Chiefs need lots of decent players, not three studs and a bunch of bums.
I would also trade Gonzalez and Johnson for whatever I could get for them. Johnson won’t bring much, but Gonzalez ought to get us a second.
It's pronounced Poo-ZHOLS in Catalan.

That's the problem with a lot of his analysis
I am a Simmons apologist, but sometimes he predicts things based on the way he wants it to happen or on some other totally intangible, personal factor that would make it more interesting. Meanwhile I am pulling my hair out yelling “It doesn’t work that way!”
by raefzilla on Mar 3, 2009 9:46 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
+1
I like Simmons for entertainment value only, but I don’t really trust any of his analysis save for the NBA.

well, he's not getting 4/100
we’ll see. I guess you make a good point: he turned down a deal that was worth way more than Manny was worth even before the economy crashed, so we’ll see.
but he’s not getting Manny much more than the options the Sox had, either.
