Hochevar's Start on Friday
Some thoughts on the start from Hochevar which was on TV!!! The second game I got to see this spring.
He still had trouble with the location of his fastball. It was everywhere. He was missing inside on the outside pitch call and vice versa.
When he threw the sinker he missed down, but when it got hit, it was belt high. Obvious assessment there... but watch him and chart him once, you'll know what I mean is deeper than surface level.
He had problems in the first once he got 2 outs. Same problem as last year.... But he took care of it in the next two. Let's get that figured out.
Once Olivo realized that the fastball/sinker wasn't working with location, they started going to the change and curve. Both of which were great. I hope we use those more this season.
One other observation was all the talk that Jacobs and CoCo have become the clubhouse leaders. Hmmmm...... Maybe that makes the trades a little better for you Dayton haters? We now have new leadership in the clubhouse.... at the price of Leo Nunez and RamRam.

No, I'd rather a team full of good baseball players than the murky nonsense of "leadership."

I think we need more "windup/stretch face" pictures
we get plenty of “pitching face” pictures (I think doublestix posted one of Duffy that’s one of my favorites — it’s like he was thinking “I’m not going to make a pitching face” or something). But this is a good one. It makes him look like he’s totally bored and wondering when the games going to be over.

He Seems To
Lose his command more when pitching out of the stretch.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

True dat!
Loss of concentration with 2 out is inexcusable with a ML pitcher.

When we drafted him
I really thought command would be the last thing we’d have to worry about. Very troubling that a guy that already doesn’t have overpowering stuff has command issues as well.

When we drafted him I was working a construction job in the summer
I had a radio that looked like it had been dropped off a roof 5 times and had a screwdriver jammed into the top so that it’d work.
I heard the announcement, sat down, and cried. I didn’t work the rest of the day.

I didn't know much about him
were you not impressed with his pitching in college?

no, that was fine.
The problem was I thought there were better players AND he sat a year for money reasons…. Not to mention that agent he has…

Who did you want?
I wanted Brad Lincoln. Oops. I liked Lincecum a lot, but was concerned about his high pitch counts in college.

Don't worry
Linecum will be out of pro ball in a couple years. Way too short.

I was all over Andrew Miller LHP from NC and Max Scherzer RHP from Mizzou
I thought both were better. Neither have done anything HUGE yet… although I still expect Miller to be the best pitcher out of that draft in five years.

Almost nobody was seriously talking about Lincecum as the #1 overall selection in that draft
There are a few reasons that he fell as far as he did. Some of them are even good ones.

I still say they should have made him a catcher

Positional scarcity
Every organization has tons of pitchers. But catching is where you really need talent. He’s got the build for it. And the arm.

Scherzer looks to be another stud
Arizona has some unbelievably kick-ass pitchers, and i don’t think any of them are 30. Check my post at Driveline out later this week. I was thinking tomorrow, but Kyle just posted a bunch of stuff, so I might put it off until Thursday.
