Expectations of Jacobs on the Rise
This is great news. I mean, what's the incentive to raise expectations on the guy if he's really not doing well. This should cheer all of us. I'm most pleased by the OBP for ST.
But let the ripping begin. - TL

stupidest part (I think)
"As baseball players," Jacobs said, "I think you get labeled sometimes. And it’s through word of mouth. Until you can see somebody play every day … unfortunately, it’s (the media’s) job to write stuff."
If you saw him play every day you’d see all the top secret walks he took I guess.

although the dismissal of a year's worth of bad defense due to his ability to handle the 3-1 play is close

I thought this was the stupidest part
has yet to commit what the Brits love to call a howler.
Really? a Briticism in a baseball article?

The day I see a first baseman
let a thrown ball roll between his legs or kick the ball into their own goal, I’m just going to shoot myself.

"word of mouth through the media"
which is exactly what this article. The “word of mouth” according to Royals coaches is that he’s a pretty good defender.
It’s the non-“word of mouth” part, you know, other scouting reports, all the evdience, etc. that suggest he’s the best argument yet for trying Butler at first full-time.

I was gonna post this article but I just didn't feel up to all the negativity that would come from it.
Optimism on the coaching staff. FREAKIN IDIOTS
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

the criticism lies with dutton
I expect the coaches to be positive and to say silly things to the media
its dutton’s job to be a better filter

I disagree
These stories are just the kind of stuff that is always reported. I guess one could argue the media in general could do a better job (Coaches think Jacobs is better than advertised at first! New evidence indicates WMDs hidden in crawl space! Howard Zinn’s history of American is a credible reference work!), but what are you going to do.

Who knows maybe we get lucky and get a Brady Anderson performance from Jacobs.

the other awesome part
was this:
‘Honestly, the word is that you can rake
Um, even in the traditional sense, does a guy guy with a career .262 BA count as someone who “rakes?”
Does being a slightly above average hitter two out of the last three years (that’s right, folks, your new “better than Gload!!!111” acquisition who is best suited defensively to be a DH was a below average hitter in 2007) imply “raking?” If Jacobs “rakes,” how shouldl we describe a guy who is actually, you know, a good hitter? By this standard, maybe Gordon=Brett after all.
Or maybe they just mean he’s conscientious about keeping leaves off of his lawn.

I wouldn’t place much, if any, weight on this article, let alone the organization’s comments about Jacobs. Do you think they actually traded Nunez for a legitimate/threat/difference-making true “middle of the order” hitter? It’s a light-hearted/complimentary article. I still think Moore has a vague semblance of what constitutes a good hitter, even if he gets misguided, at times. In other words, he would prefer a .260/.360/.520 hitter over a .260/.320/.480 hitter. Or Adam Dunn over Mike Jacobs………
Oh, crap.
Well, the article was light-hearted and fun.
I think?

I’m always in clarification mode here on RR – I’ll clarify my own comment yet further. I know they don’t believe Jacobs is an elite power hitter. Obviously, hope springs eternal in Florida & Arizona every March…I don’t think it’s ultimately damning to the extent they could reward Jacobs with a shiny three year extension in May, but I don’t think it can be negated completely. It’s something to store in the back of the head. The sick thing is….I do think Moore & Co. have a vague semblance of what constitutes a truly good hitter, with some minor flaws along the way. As for coaches like Owen & Seitzer, who cares? It’s their responsibility simply to coax the best out of the player. I don’t place much, if any, emphasis on what Hillman says, either, for reasons that are pretty transparent.

At least he's (unapologetically) honest...
When it comes to hitting, Jacobs makes no apologies for being a free swinger in search of the long ball. Asked whether that were an accurate reflection of his approach, he responded memorably earlier this spring:
"Absolutely. Absolutely. Absolutely."
Today, we are all Honkballers.

George Brett Would
Have had 800 HR’s and hit .220 if he had adopted Jacobs’s philosophy instead of Lau’s.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

That was really my favorite part...
it was like Dutton and Hillman and Owen were really trying hard to pimp him as being a good hitter (and at least improving on defense). They even have a Seitzer quote that shows some mild encouragement/optimism. But then you ask Jacobs and he effectively says, “No, I’ll probably just suck like usual…but I’ll sure try to hit a lot of home runs! I like it when the ball goes a long way. Wheeee!”
