OT: Lawrence, Kansas
I just got accepted into the PhD program at the University of Kansas and will be moving there in July. I've actually never been there (or to Kansas at all in fact) and I was wondering if anyone had any information to share. For example...
What kinds of things are there to do in Lawrence?
Are there any apartment or housing places that I should seek out or should avoid?
What types of eating establishments are good or should I avoid (I see that there is a Gumby's which we have here in Michigan and I already know to avoid that place).
Just any information at all would be helpful. I'm excited to move near my team (or at least nearer), but I've only lived in the South,Michigan, and Germany before.

I'm in Lawrence all the time
Mass. Street contains more restaurants per capita than any city in the U.S., or so I’ve heard. Mass. Street is the place to hang out, period. Zen Zero is good, as is the Hookah Bar (not sure if you’re into Hookah). As for clubs/bars – It’s Brothers is probably my favorite. Free Hot Wings on Wednesday nights. So many establishments – Asian restaurants, Middle Eastern….it’s pretty amazing, really.
It’s also a liberal city – one of only two dominantly liberal areas of Kansas (the other being KCK).

Really? I hadn’t noticed. People in Lawrence are very humble about their obvious superiority to everyone else in the region.

what type of debate did you do?
I did LD in HS and Parli in collge
by royalsreview on Mar 3, 2009 11:55 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Didn't we already have this talk after your Hs reunion?
I did Cross-X. Looking back on it, LD would have given me better skills long-term other than being able to use university libraries and the old “throw out as many arguments as possible” technique, but, whatever, LD was sort of something that people who didn’t have a partner or didn’t want to put the time into C-X did, it wasn’t as “cool.” Because, as you know, Cross-X debate is very cool.

remember it now
frankly, i wasn’t hardciore enough to do CX, and bought into the whole prestige thing of LD as being more pure, more oratorical, etc.
the thing is, I’ve judged a fair amount of HS LD this decade in random places, and it seems to be essentially just one on one policy, people even have cards and mini-tubs… same thing seems to have happened with parli, which admittedly may end up being just a historical anomaly and a regional fad that died out
eventually, all forms of debate trend towards evidence over style

was it effects T or extra T that was in the gray area
like, it wasn’t supposed to be a voter, but just stricken from the flow or somesuch
by royalsreview on Mar 4, 2009 2:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
depends on what you argued
effects T was just saying that the plan only seemed topical, but really wasn’t. Extra-T said that part of the plan was non-topical. You could argue it was a voter.
We always put a severabilty plank in and sometimes that would be how we got rid of extra-T, supposdely.
I only used twice in four years, but for other reasons — once, a team backfired on themselves. It was a tournament in New Orleans, where I had a new partner who was no good because mey good partner had just got kicked off the squad. Some team fixated on our severability plank, complaining that it was unfair and that with it, we’d be able to “severe a blank in 2AR and they couldn’t do anything about it.” They had tons of stuff out there, and my partner f-ed up 1AR because he wasn’t good (very smart guy, not a good debater). i had just put up token resistance on it, but then they just dropped it.
So in 2AR, I said, “hey, they must have agreed with my arguments that it was okay, and they were the ones who said we could sever in 2AR,” so I severed the plank that all their DAs linked to… yup, we won.
Glory days…

one of my old debate boys had a long, complicated story
about a round turning into a huge argument over whether or not a counter-plan could or couldn’t be effects topical (I think) and opposed to straight tpoical
considering how much CPs generally would eff up a round (as mentioned above) it was a pretty hillarious story… too bad I can’t remember any of it

oh yeah,
the funny thing about that coming up in this thread is that I came extremely close to taking a debate scholarship to KU… but then for the second time in two years, I lost in the round before Nationals, and with my usual drama (combined with typical teenage idiocy), just said “screw it.” My parents had to talk me into going to university at all. And by “talk me into it,” I mean “you can stay here, work at a grocery store, and pay us rent otherwise, but you are not going to get money from us to become a professional guitar player.” Good call on their part…

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.
by devil_fingers on Mar 3, 2009 7:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It actually depends...
There’s a divide in anthropology between the straight up “science” type and the “humanities” type. Some anthropologists say that if you aren’t doing science then you aren’t actually adding anything to the knowledge base, while others feel that since science is inherently culturally biased that anthropology needs take step back from the rigor and use science as but one small tool in the arsenal.
However, the nature of biological anthropology makes it difficult to have the second view. In many universities, anthropology is actually in split departments. Bio Anthropologists will either be in the anthropology department, the biology department, or in a separate department specifically for bio anthropologists and hardcore science archaeologists.
At Kansas, it is still with the anthropology department, though I don’t know if there is interaction between the biological and cultural people. Personally, I was trained in three of the four major subfields (archaeology, cultural, and biological), so I take a more holistic view and try to have a viewpoint more in the middle.
"I DARE you to make less sense."

yeah... it seems like purely humanistic anthro is going to die as in independent field

Lived in Lawrence for three years
It really is a wonderful little college town. There are plenty of good live music venues. I liked the Jazzhaus when I lived there. Abe and Jake’s used to have some decent acts if you don’t mind a dance club type atmosphere. Spencer Museum of Art is probably one of the best small town museums you’ll find. And of course there is always KU baseball at Hoglund Stadium, right next to Allen Field House.
I’ll echo Zen Zero, and add their sister restaurant La Parilla. Ingredient is a great pizza/sandwich place that uses fresh local ingredients. Teller’s is decent for an American sit-down restaurant, and its housed in a former bank, which is kinda cool. Pachamama’s is considered the best Italian place in town. And if you are an adventurous foodie, Krause Dining is supposed to be an amazing four hour seven course meal gourmet experience.

Been here almost 20 years. Loved it and never left.
and seen a lot of people and places come and go. Some of those mentioned above are keepers, others will just run their natural course of fad-ism. Lawrence has such odd samplings of demographics…..lots of liquidity due to college students, some commuting KC/Topeka types, some townies, just an eclectic mix. I guess many places are essentially like that, but with a total population circling around 100K (and I don’t know how the student population figures into that, if at all) it is remarkably different than other cities of its size.

Lawrence is a special place
I’ve gotten to know a few “college towns” and that description doesn’t do Lawrence any more justice than hanging that label on Austin or Madison.
Lawrence is smaller than I would like it to be. It has its shortcomings. But it is an easy place to settle into for a few years and build a happy life.
Plus Lawrence is a great place for baseball fans. Bill James and John Sickels give the town some history. KU baseball. Less than an hour to Kauffman and the T-Bones. It’s all good.

Papa Keno's
was my pizza parlor of choice while in Lawrence.
Hang outs:
Henry T’s – small town sports bar. Mostly locals
Replay Lounge – Bar with an alternative feel and crowd
Johnny’s Tavern – Bar just across the river. Big party bar.
And of course, Free State Brewery.
Agree with Retro, JazzHaus was a good place for decent local live acts. All of the above with the exception of Henry T’s is on Mass st.
As for places to live, its not an expensive town. Most places west of Iowa St are newer and Suburbanish everything East of Iowa is either old apartments, student ghetto, or old small town-type houses. There are some nice places on the east part of town but you’d have to hunt for them.
The student Ghetto is on Tennessee and Kentucky (If I recall) between 9th st and 19th st. Not a place to live if you’re looking for quiet study time.

it's hard to get to...
you can’t just pull off the highway. I lived in Manhattan for 6.5 years and loved every minute of it. The town itself is laid out fairly well in that you can walk/ride your bike to everything (unlike Lawrence). And the Flint Hills are great for mtn biking/hiking. Tuttle Creek is a nice place to go, with the lake covering more than 12,000 acres and an ORV in Randolph having 300+ acres for off-roading or biking or whatever. Look for the fault lines if you’re into geology. There are nice family areas as well.
Lawrence has access to Clinton Lake, the river trails, and Perry Lake is not too far away either.

Massachussetts St
is where a lot of the fun places in Lawrence are (Royals Nation is right on there). A lot of the good hang out places and restaurants have already been listed. I would just add Ingredient to the list, they make pizzas, salads, and really really good sandwiches. I think they are attached to a wine bar (or something along those lines) as well. FWIW, I’ve never lived in Lawrence, but growing up in suburban Kansas City, people would go to Lawrence to have a good time.
PS: Lawrence > Manhattan. All Manhattan has going for it is Aggieville, which Mass St. completely trumps.

Lawrence is amazing
A great place to get started to find restaurants and bars is www.lawrence.com , you can also find when various music acts and other events are coming to town which Lawrence gets a wide variety of. As far as living being cheap, I would say it just depends on whether you’re willing to look around a bit. Some places can be pretty pricey compared to others but there are always deals out there.

Town in the summer, or at least they used to. I was a proto-punk from KCK who lived in Topeka until 7-7-77; you just don’t forget a date like that.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

Standard college town lefties
I’m a liberal, but the college town pretentious lefty and/or hippies are pretty unbearable. That’s why I don’t want to move to Portland, despite my wife’s pleas.

It's strange how towns can be really pretentiously left
and not be very diverse ethnically. Although, I’m only basing that on wikipedia’s demographics…and those could be wrong.

That's actuallly pretty predictable, of course

compared to the rest of iowa
iowa city was pretty diverse, although I’m sure it was still 95% white

KCK North Of
The river is the definition of ethnic diversity. It’s left of center politically, but hardly pretentious.

Kansas City has an actual history as a city
that’s different than a college town

no "hippie town" is known for its BBQ

The hippy thing gets way overblown
Yeah there are definitely some but there are plenty of different social groups like punk as you mentioned, preppy kids are everywhere, and don’t get me started on all the country people. (It is Kansas afterall) And despite being a majority liberal town, there is quite a good contingent of conservative/republicans in Lawrence. No one wants to believe it but the only real development in Lawrence in the last 15 years residentially has been on the West side of town where the price of house is a lot higher.
My basic point, there is something in Lawrence for everyone no matter what stereotypes are given.

And think of the hackey sack industry
They rely on hippies. Hippies are vital for our economy.

if you don’t like the hippie culture then prob stay away from the merk and the people that shop there regularly. it’s all about organic, free range stuff but its actually more expensive then hyvee or walmart
My stories a lot like yours only more interesting because it involves robots!

i like lawrence alot
they have the absolute best music store in the region, the love garden. live music is very prevalent most every night. there are some very good lawrence bands, and many bands stop in lawrence instead of kc. downtown has so much to offer for all kinds of people… it looks as though this website contains all kinds of people so it is hard to recommend exact places. if you want to avoid the student ghetto, i recommend living east of mass street. i am sure you will love it.

i've lived in lawrence for 5 years...
i second the music scene. i’ve seen so many great shows here over the years, spoon, appleseed cast (local), brmc, black keys, josh ritter, hold steady just to name a few.
hanging out in the outside area of the replay lounge in the summer can’t be beat. brunch on sunday at the eldridge is second to none.
basketball at allen fieldhouse goes without mentioning. theres literally a restaurant for everybody here and yeah mass street is pretty cool.
its a cool little/big town, i’ve been pretty happy here. as far as living, i’ve always thought it’d be cool to live on mass st. there are apmts above many of the stores, you just have to be creative to see if anything is available/renting for a decent price.

Went to KU and lived there for 5 years...
I thought it was a great town. Granted every place will have it’s quirks, especially a college town. The nice thing is that the KC Metro is only a half an hour away, so you can enjoy some big city luxuries as well.
Not sure I ever lived in a better place…I hope to get back there. Felt like home for me.
