"And I thought, 'I really wonder how he would be as a starter? The way he makes his innings so easy.' And then about 10 seconds later, I'm thinking, 'Well, hold on. To have a guy that can just dominate the ninth inning -- in a way, it's more valuable to have that. It's more important to have a guy nailing down games than maybe a starter winning 13 to 14 games.'"

Well i screwed that up

Anyway, i noticed this nugget in the Soria article on Royals.com. I found it a little surprising (and depressing) that a starting pitcher of all people doesn’t grasp the importance of good starting pitching over a padded and useless stat. Oh well.

Interpretation

I think it’s a sign of courteousness and respect to Soria, and nothing more. Just team-mate speak. Maybe Gil feels this way, although if he had to choose between starting and closing, would he ultimately seriously choose the 9th inning? I think he would prefer starting. Ah, who knows?

If the "smart" guys in the front office can't figure it out

I’m not going to blame Meche for not figuring it out. It’s not his job.

I'm sure selfishly, Gil wants him closing....

he might personally lose a couple of Ws if someone else less effective is out there…

So is Gil saying he is way overpaid?

I think Gil's funny

Gil talking about the big, looping curveball and sitting in the dugout waiting for it so they can laugh at opposing hitters… that’s funny.

Another guy who just doesn't get it

Overly simplistic analysis which has been disproven over and over again. The numbers are clear. Mechanical issues and injury risk are potentially good reasons to not make Soria a starter. The argument that a shutdown closer is worth more to his team than a good starter is not. That’s just plain ignorance.
