Around SBN: Carmelo Anthony, Amar'e Stoudemire Vow To Fit In With Lin

ESPN is reporting that Manny Ramirez and the Dodgers have come to terms on a 2-year deal, details of which have yet to be released. Of course, while I'm watching this on TV right now, ESPN has yet to update their site.

Nope

He’s been determined to give ManRam too much money all offseason. Looks like he’s finally landed his big overpaid whale.

Looking at it just from a WAR standpoint,

Manny WILL help the Dodgers. But it’ll be a joke that’s not particularly funny if he gets over 20 milion a year, as the rumors to say.

May I say that it’s good to be blogging with you again? :)

Welcome back

It’s good to have you back in the fold. It was really uncool of Will to ban and exile you there for a while. But I’m confident you’ve been rehabilitated and are ready to be a productive member of society again.*

Manny is likely good for around 4 WAR (with a significance chance of collapsing down to 2-3 WAR due to his age). Of course Ned doesn’t care that such production used to be worth about $20M per year and is now worth about $16M. So he’s throwing $25M at him. And given his age, Manny will likely be more like a 3.5 WAR player (or considerably worse) in the second year of his contract.

If I were Colletti, I would have offered him 2/34 with significant bonuses for massive production (let’s say top 5 MVP voting, or some other awards like Silver Slugger). Then I would have given him a hard deadline of March 15. If he doesn’t want it or can get more elsewhere, then he can go there or sit out the year.

Forgot my asterisk
  • - for those who may be relatively new to Royals Review, the second and third sentences were a joke.

It's OK that you forgot your asterisk.

The only good place for those is in the Hall of Fame.*

WTF, self?

I think that would've been a good offer

but Colletti wouldn’t have the stones to recognize who has the leverage.

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary since sometime in 2008.
