The Office Season 5 Episode 16 Open Thread
We haven't had a new Office since mid-February, so hopefully...
Blood Drive: Kevin and Dwight host a lonely-hearts party while Pam & Jim go on a double-date with Phyllis and Bob.
That's Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration.
One odd thing about the show -- which I can't figure out if I like or dislike -- is how running plotlines will seemingly be dropped for months at a time. (On the one hand, it would seem very sitcomy to mention these things for no reason, but on the other hand, the overall storylines seem to get dropped. Maybe the device is trying to recreate the way you only half-know things about your co-workers, I dunno...) Like, what's happening with Jan? Is Kelly testing Ryan overseas at $5.00 a pop? How did Pam just transition back to being a receptionist? And most pertinently, did Pam & Jim move into Jim's parent's house?
Anyway, no Royals game today, so we can all turn our focus to TV.

you would think Dwight would be all over weird anti-angela pranks and/or trying to win her back

My sister called me Dwight because I like Battlestar Galactica
I do so hate her.

The seemingly random story advancement is one of the show's strengths
(On the one hand, it would seem very sitcomy to mention these things for no reason, but on the other hand, the overall storylines seem to get dropped. Maybe the device is trying to recreate the way you only half-know things about your co-workers, I dunno…)
I kind of like the backburner approach and relaxed pace of developing certain storylines. Taking Jan as an example, her character works best when she is not heard from for awhile and then there is a sudden reveal — the kiss, Sandals Jamaica, the love contract, the firing, the deposition, the dinner party, the pregnancy, the baby shower. The backlash against Jim and Pam is due in large part to the tedium of the show being compelled to give that story line some air time virtually every week. As another example, Toby’s pass at Pam was especially effective because it kind of came out of nowhere and had not been constantly featured in the weeks leading up to that episode.
With Angela-Dwight-Andy story, I like the tension that builds from the show not directly highlighting it (other than brief nuggets like Jim’s “nobody cares” line a couple weeks ago), so when they finally address the fallout (I’m guessing it will come when Angela gains a new love interest — please let it be Roy), it will be genuinely surprising.

I heard that Idris Elba of “The Wire” is joining the cast of the Office as someone from corporate, possible an ax-man to fire Michael Scott.

With Andy on his honeymoon
I wonder with the economic downturn and The Office’s large cast, we might start seeing more random absences by the supporting characters as a cost saving maneuver. Next week, Kelly (or is it Kelley?) will be visiting Ryan in Thailand, and the week after that Angela, Oscar, and Kevin will be an accountant convention.

Decent episode
The Michael-in-love storyline was believable and worked (unlike the “chair model” episode), Pam and Jim got their NBC-mandated screen time but it was mostly their reactions to Phyllis and Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, and picking up Kevin’s dropped story line about his love life was a nice touch.
The best bits were Kelly’s Valentine card, Andy’s honeymoons, and the poor lady who was turned away from the party, and while the random Fonzie reference should not have worked, it did because of the execution.

I agree
Other plus’s to the episode:
Michael’s reaction to Oscar’s lost love story
Phyllis guzzling her drink after she and Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, return from the bathroom
Bob’s description of Michael, Dwight, and Andy as “that jackass, that other jackass, and the new jackass.”
Michael trying to use Meredith’s hysterectomy as the basis of a pick-up line for her
The very last scene in the episode with Stanley and Creed
This was one of the few episodes this season where I really liked the Pam & Jim subplot.

I found this episode surprisingly boring
Little happened and there were few, if any big laughs.
