Big contract on the way
Boras is representing Strasburg…You can be sure that that FanGraph will be included in the upcoming publication entitled Why Stephen Strasburg Wholeheartedly Deserves the Biggest Contract of any Prospect Ever.
Washington is going to have the pony up $10 million for this guy, probably more. And he just might be worth it.

Yeah, a $10M major league contract wouldn't surprise me
Boras doesn’t care about the economy’s effect on the market and he doesn’t need to. If the Nats won’t meet his demands, he’ll just take his client to an independent league and have him re-enter the draft the next year, like he did with Hochevar. And somebody is going to pony up the huge money for him. And with the Nats offering huge money to Teixeira, they can’t argue that they can’t afford him.

I know nothing about Strasberg...
But a guy like that is certainly a better deal for $10MM than most free agents.

And he's certainly worth a few million more than a mid-level prospect.
Of course, the top-level hitting prospects are worth the most.

Probably true
It looks very unlikely someone will pass him at this point.

I don't know about that.
This is precisely the sort of economic climate wherein one can’t afford to turn down $5M now for $10M next year. If attendance appears to be down sharply as we near the draft, expect teams to play hardball, and draftees to buckle.

Could be
But there are several large market teams that wouldn’t hesitate to throw $10M or more at him. If I were Boras, I’d stick to that number. If the Nats don’t take it, then I’d have him wait out a year and then someone else would give him that much. Quite frankly, I think the Nats will shell out something like that. If the Nats were willing to give many tens of millions to Teixeira and then didn’t spend most of that money, they they have more than enough to sign Strasburg. Strasburg has all of the leverage.

You may be in denial.
The Dow’s going to fall under 5K, maybe further. Trust me on this. By 2012, the Royals could very well be a “large-market” team solely by virtue of having an owner who’s actually still making money. And on the way there, teams that have been, shall we say, less than rational are going feel the pain. The Yankees’ expenditures this off-season are mind-boggling in their idiocy, given the situation.
Maybe THIS year, owners will still be stupid enough to think that an economic recovery is around the corner, but all it takes is one team to be unwilling to make that sort of investment, and Strasburg’s caught in a vise… because if that one team is the Nationals, he either has to sign, or risk getting even less next year. If Boras is too stupid to see that financial armageddon is a very real possibility, then so be it.

MLB revenues are still going to be huge
As huge as last year? Probably not. But the Nats clearly were willing to spend much more than that. And they didn’t get their first round pick signed last time. Strasburg is going to get what he wants. If not this year, then next year. I know the economy is awful, but it’s not like all of the spending has stopped and the salaries have dropped off. Elite talent still gets huge money (Sabathia, Teixeira…hell, even Manny and his total value isn’t elite). The head-and-shoulders-above-the-rest #1 overall pick is going to get huge money. And the Nats will thank Boras for allowing them to give it to him.

With the Nats not signing Crow last year
I find it hard to believe they will not get Stras signed that would be a pretty tough pill for the fan base to try to force down.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

How did Andrew Miller get so much hype in 2006?
I didn’t it back then, and I still don’t get it now.

That won't help the Royals get Strasburg
Unless the Nats don’t sign him and he re-enters the draft in 2010.

Strasburg and Mark Prior
Compare Strasburg’s college career to another recent college pitcher to come out of the San Diego area, Mark Prior. Pretty similar.
How much did Prior get when he came out in 2001?
I suspect Strasburg will get something around $10M unless he gets hurt. I hope he has taken out an insurance policy. He still has about 70 more innings to throw this season.
