Hopefully, the Royals can move one of Buck, Pena, and Olivo.

I'd imagine that Dayton would rather trade Buck or Olivo to clear salary space and eliminate seemingly duplicate players.

What's a relatively pricey catcher worth in this market?

Olivo should have never been promised a starting job

Because Buck is doing all he can to get some offense going in spring.
I’d would rather Olivo is traded but I don’t see that happening.
Buck is a goner, and although I’m glad, it’s too bad because I feel Buck is better than Olivo.

Might be true.

Seems like I bitched about Buck throwing grounders to second base way too often last summer.

Everybody recognizes Buck's ineffectiveness at throwing out runners but,

I have yet to see a decent explanation as to why he is so poor. If it were bad mechanics or footwork it seems that could be corrected. Just a weak throwing arm?

Or (please)

did he just have a bad year?

hopefully it’s not the same this year.

When we dump one of them

(and we will, short of an injury) What are the odds that the player in return will be a prospect at the level of pre-trade Cordier?

by Top Ramen on Mar 8, 2009 11:05 AM EDT reply actions

Zero point zero

Cordier was worth an out-of-options TPJ back then. Buck and Olivo are both worth more than that. I know we like to play the game around here that any Royal who we don’t think is particularly good is, therefore, actually totally worthless, but that just doesn’t reflect reality.

I hope you're right

I realize that Buck/Olivo have more trade value than Pena did at the time, but in this case, my defense mechanism is saying “Expect one of them to be dumped for nothing (or a Huber-special).” That way, I’ll be pleasantly surprised when we get something above that.

by Top Ramen on Mar 8, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

This is true

But is there any team out there who would want Buck or Olivo as their starter? Not many. Both would make excellent backups, but mediocre starters. And $3m for a backup catcher is something most teams just are not going to countenance (like the Royals, hence the desire to dump one).

They have value. But unless we take salary back, i don’t see much in the way of decent prospects.

AAAA vestiges

I think that attitude, that I’m certainly guilty of, comes from our long march through the wilderness as nothing more than a AAAA ballclub. So, if a player was too sucky to catch on and stay on the Royals, then certainly he can’t be good enough for one of the real teams.

Hopefully, that is changing now.

Worth

I suppose I wonder if they’ll be worth a fleet footed outfielder. Or can we actually turn one of these players into a legitimate prospect (not that Paulo Orlando is worthless).

by kcinstl on Mar 8, 2009 11:41 AM EDT reply actions

Just to beat that drum again.

The Red Sox were looking for a catcher before they resigned Varitek. Buck or Olivo for Coco Crisp would have been a fair trade. The exchange of two older players, neither realitistically offering topside. Both roughly average at a premium defensive position. Crisp and Olivo/Buck would have likely received roughly the same amount of palying time in Boston. Crisp was due twice as much money as Olivo/Buck.

This trade would have made much more sense and been more balanced than Ramirez for Crisp. But again, Boston does a good job in trades and evaluating major league talent, and Moore, … not so much.

I can't imagine Buck has much worth

He’s below average and makes $3 million. In this economy, that’s pretty much negative value.

Greg Schaum says Pena has not impressed the team, and they are particularly concerned with his defense. Sounds like they’ll probably try to slip him through waivers.

I'd move Buck

He’s on the downward slide more than Olivo. Bring in Brayan Pena as your backup OR just sign Pudge and trade Olivo and Buck. :)

Pudge hits bombs.

That's why we play the season on paper.

pudge is awful....

and Buck is on the downward slide? Olivo is 2 years older and has been better than Buck like 1 year in his career…

TPJ...you're dead to me

by billybeingbilly on Mar 8, 2009 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Well they hit roughly he same, very slight edge to Buck from walks.

Olivo is a lot faster and has a lot better arm.
Buck has much softer hands then Olivo and will save wild pitches and have fewer passballs.
Projections really like Buck’s bat above Olivo’s. Most likely because of the age difference I guess even though Buck seems more worn down then Olivo. (legs, arm seems to be getting worse)
I like Olivo’s game calling (don’t nibble and trust your stuff *See Davies) more then Bucks (traditional catcher *Meche style) but I am not exactly an expert judge of that. It might be a reason to keep both and use them with different pitchers even though Hillman says he doesn’t use them that way.

Go Royals!

by BabyBlues on Mar 8, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

or maybe the projections are going off of past performance....

buck has been the better hitter and his throwing last year…which is olivos only real advantage was likely an aberration

I Have No

Problem with keeping both of them. They’re both acceptable MLB backstops with similar skills but slightly different platoon splits. I’d make sure Olivo sees all the LHP’s he can, and the wear and tear of a season will give both of them plenty of opportunity to play against RHP’s.

I was for dealing one of them and keeping Pena, but failing that I see no reason not to keep both. If they split the load about evenly, stay fresh and Hillman gives them their best opportunities to succeed we will have the C position acceptably covered until something better comes along.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Mar 9, 2009 8:01 AM EDT reply actions

i agree

but as of right now what is better? they’re both raking….. and i really honestly don’t know much about pena but everyone seems to be pretty high on him so i can’t really for him or against him

and quit picking on me… i’m just happy that we’re not talking about how bad they’re sucking right now…. cuz even though spring training stats are meaningless, if they were both doing terrible we’d all be pulling them apart
