If this is true
Can we just look at it like we got Mike Jacobs for Nunez and Gload and they agreed to pay Gload’s salary? I liked the trade before, but not I REALLY think we got over on Florida.
In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.
WOO-HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
So let me get this straight, they wouldn’t pay $1.5 mill for Joe Nelson, but they’ll pay $1.9 million for Ross Gload? The cut Dallas McPherson to make room for Ross Gload?
Are they intentionally trying to lose?

My bet is this is a joke.

ahhh...
Sent Ross Gload along with Cash Considerations. How much do you think we sent? $1M?

Probably $1.8M

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
25 man roster
This means Shealy makes the team, right?
In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.
You sure would think so or they go with the 3 catchers
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
Finally
Although there’s almost no way the Royals get 1.9M of value out of the PTBNL (or cash).
The lesson to be learned going forward: Don’t give players like Ross Gload a guaranteed 2 year deal when there is no reason to do so.
Well, DM should have learned his lesson....
there is no way we would give a player like Gload a two year deal again! Well, execept for Bloomquist and Farthsworth.
Doh!
Go Royals!
4 backups
Shealy
Bloomquist
Callaspo
Buck

That has to be the bench...
unless they somehow move Buck.

Made you look?
They’re getting really good with their April Fool’s Jokes. I almost believed them. It’s perfect- believable but unlikely, not huge but can be seen as substantial, and, of course, evokes an extreme emotional response from all who read it. ;)
Next Up
We’ll see some silly story about Buck or Olivo traded without significant cash considerations for a useful prospect and one of our capable C’s in the minors taking over as backup.
These silly April Fool’s gags. What will people think of next
I heard
That Hanley Ramirez was pissed about the hair thing, maybe he’s the PTBNL.
In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.
Where?
would Hanley play? We already have Aviles at SS.
In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.
move aviles to second
Move Teahen to first
and trade Jacobs to the Marlins (or Braves or Seattle) for a PTNL or Nunez….)
I'd rather have Jacobs at first
than Teahen by a country mile
In the Royals game of life, Neifi Perez is the rake.
Jacobs Bat I agree with
Putting Han Ram at SS w/ Gordon and Jacobs in the inf? Why bother wearing gloves? They would have to wear Giant Head Cups for protection, cause nobody’s gonna catch
He's not great
but he’s probably not as bad as he seemed in 2007. last year numbers have him closer to average. Monster player.

The Marlins have an extremely deep farm system
so I like GMDMs odds at getting a player that contribute in some way.

Is Gload worth a remembering Ross Gload post?
Maybe…but this transaction is kind of “meh”. Gload’s a “meh” player. It’s amazing how much he has been debated/ostracized on this blog.
Waiting for April.
Absolutely
I was/am a big Gload fan. He was ostracized here because of his overuse.

hmm...
how many at bats would have been an appropriate use? He’s a backup 1B, corner outfield guy that, as far as I can tell, doesn’t have any of the defensive or power skills you’d like in a bench player. It’s true that he always hustled and I never saw him give away an at bat, but I can’t really see any use of gload that wouldn’t have been better given to another player.
“It’s true that he always hustled and I never saw him give away an at bat”
I value that quality greatly. He was correctly used on a defending WS championship team in ’06, and close to correctly used in ’07 – still overused, but if memory serves, that was mostly due to other injuries/lack of depth. Last year he was dramatically over-used, but he still played with injuries, and played hard
BOOM! ROASTED!
It's in no way Ross Gloads fault
that GMDM Didn’t have Butler/Kila/Shealy taking 80% of the 1B at bats last year – as SHOULD have been the case.
I find it ludacris that apparantly people expect RG and players like him to step into Trey’s/GMDM’s office & relenquish PT.
BOOM! ROASTED!
ok, I can agree
I don’t “hate” Ross Gload, and it’s not his fault that he got all that playing time.
But he does suck.
I don’t hate TPJ, either. Seems like a nice guy. But h e sucks, too.

No arguement
that his results sucked.
I just get a big burr in my ass when people say they “Hate” players like Ross Golad, or Sweeney toward the end…
People that DO say that are in my eyes saying they hate undertalented players that bust their ass and work for everything they DO get. They hate players that their Managers WANT to see have success, because they ‘never give away at bats’, so they give them too much PT to reward their hard work.
BOOM! ROASTED!
And no, Sweeney wasn’t ‘undertalented’ I added him after I typed that paragraph, jus to clarify
BOOM! ROASTED!
On the Contrary...
I have NO ISSUE at all when people say the hate a guy like Angel Berroa, who wsa never viewed as a hard-worker. He was the antithisis of that, the guy with all the talent, but dind’t put in the effort.
You still wont -generally – catch ME saying I hate so & so, but that is the player that I am inclined to…
BOOM! ROASTED!
I agee that I have no hate for players that do the most with what they had, but..
if they don’t they make the list:
Jeremy Giambi
Dee Brown
Fat Elvis
Sisco
Quinn

Seems to me
that Gloadie worked well as a bat of the bench. He wasn’t Pat Tabler but he did have a knack for getting a base hit when we needed one. He was a solid glove at 1B and had enough versatility that he could sub a corner outfield spot on Sunday afternoon.
Its a nice luxury to have a player like Gload. It just so happens that there were some in the Front Office who thought it better to play Gload as an everyday player, that’s an issue with the Royals not with the player.
The Snozberries taste like Snozberries
I dn't agree
aveage at best at 1B, worse than Guillen in the outfield, and with a bat that might play in the middle infield.
That’s pretty much the definition of replacement level.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 1, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions
What do you think he was?
He’s a sub off the bench. He is a utility player and a guy who can sub in when others need a break. Why is that so bad?
The Snozberries taste like Snozberries
Yea
Not too many teams, especailly small market teams, have much better that RG off the benc in most years.
BOOM! ROASTED!

that's an issue with DM not Ross Gload
I agree with you there.

I just don't understand
why were getting upset that a utility player projects to be the definition of replacement level. That seems to make total sense to me.
The Snozberries taste like Snozberries
replacement level does not mean bench

Um, because he was paid more than the minimum?
and because there are tons of player who would do the same for the minimum? “repacement level” doesn’ mean “good bench player.”

See above -
It’s really not Ross Gload’s fault that he picked up a multi-year contract full of guaranteed money.
The Snozberries taste like Snozberries
again, not crificizing him personally
I just think that
1) No team should pay more than the minimum for a replacement level player
and
2) Given Shealy and Butler (and later Kila), in addition to all the Gload-esque players out there for “free,” Gload had no place on the roster at all.

Totally agree.
I did not like the way he was used in 2008. 2007 there were some injury issues. But there was just no justifiable reason to play him everyday last year.
I wish him well and I’m sure used (and paid appropriately) he’ll make himself useful to his new ballclub.

Hah, I saw someone posted this in the Soria thread before I saw the fanshot...
This makes my day. In spades.
Wow, I thought the Marlins had no conscience
if this is the case, they must really feel bad about bending Dayton over with the Jacobs deal.
I love that the Royals had to send money — so predictable.
Great job, Dayton Moore! You are teh awesome! At least you got a reacharound out of this.

Sunk cost right?
He tried to get back as much as he could and a PTBNL. How can you criticize that deal?
not criticizing letting Gload go
the fact that he had to make this deal just shows how unbelievably stupid the original deal was, just like Tug H. shows how moronic the Willie B. deal was, Ponson shows how idiotic the Ho-Ram deal was, etc. I’m guessing the PTBNL is about what the Royals got for Huber: $50,000.

but at this point, he did the best he could. Maybe he’s started reading Royals Review and realized the error of his ways.
Too bad we couldn't have traded for McPherson...
since they were just going to cut him anyway. Talk about pop off the bench!

I'd rather have him than 50K.
If that is what we end up getting.
Why would the Marlins essentially swap McPherson for Gload?
I am not a McPherson fan, but he at least offers some upside with his power and his ability to take a walk (tooffset his huge contact problems).
I don't get that, either

They wanted a lefty bat, rather than McPherson’s righty bat, and Gload can play OF. Still seems weird.

Or what they would have paid if someone claimed Gload on waivers
since the claiming team is obligated to pay the portion of his salary representing the minimum salary. Moore gets to save some face by calling it a trade instead of a waiver claim.
sorry, this stuff always confuses me

Mike Jacobs you're 2009 AL MVP
I couldn't be more happy about this
Are the Royals throwing in his salary? Regardless, I’m overjoyed. I was becoming increasingly worried that Gload would be on the team as a first base defensive replacement. Thank god he’s gone. Even if the Royals get back a 35-year-old minor leaguer, this trade improves the team.

Serves me right for doing work and going to the KU game yesterday.
Huge thumbs up. Not so much because I dislike Gload, much more so because I love Shealy.
GMDM gets major props for pulling the trigger on this dump. He had to eat pride and convice Glass to eat salary. The end result is a better roster.

Half a point for Dayton
He gets a full point for realizing he screwed up and paid too much for a lousy player, and got rid of the sunk cost in exchange for something, perhaps a vegetarian burrito from Chipotle. Maybe something even better than that. However, no matter how pride-swallowing this move was, he still gets docked half of that point for having signed Gload to such a ridiculous contract in the first place.
Note: I have nothing personal against Ross Gload. I’ve never met him. Several posters here have commented that they met him and he was kind of a schloop, but everyone behaves schloopy sometimes, and he never beat up his girlfriend or got busted for crack or tried to strangle the manager or anything really bad. As a player, he always seemed to try to do his best, and you can’t ask for more than that.
But he sucks at baseball, at least compared to your average minimum-wage player, and he probably should not be in the big leagues at all, as he’s in the decline phase of a career that never reached a high point in the first place. So I am very glad he’s gone.
