Post Reviews of New Kauffman Here
I went to opening day in 2006 and 2007 but now I'm a baby about the weather and I didn't make it out there yesterday.
Some comments in the game thread were not glowing, particularly about the long lines for food and restrooms. That's surprising, since I've been told that wider concourses are better than a cure for cancer.
I thought a Fan Post would be a good way to consolidate reviews of the New K. Thanks!

Went on opening day
There are going to be long lines on that day because its the only time we’ll have 40,000 and everyone will be trying to get rip-roaring drunk. My impression was "this stuff is cool, but I see a lot of this stuff being closed the other 80 gamedays of the year.’
Kauffman looks nice, but it looks like a stadium that has been renovated. I really love how the new outfield area is configured. I didn’t get a chance to make it all the way around, but it looked cool from afar, and I love the outfield seats. The bar in right field looked like a really cool atmosphere and there are benches nearby if you just want to lounge around, but not be in the bar, and still watch the game.
The bathrooms are much nicer than they were before (no more troughs though!) but they’re pretty small. They are a lot more of them though with very visible signs hanging overhead to tell you where they are. The concessions have all received a huge facelift, and it looks like a lot of stuff is made fresher now (there was a window to the kitchen showing a guy grilling burgers and veggies fresh) I didn’t try any of the food, but it smelled wonderful and the prices seem pretty reasonable for ballpark fare.
There new Royals store looks sharp. There are HD TVs along the concourses so you don’t have to miss the game.
Really looking forward to returning so I can check out the Hall of Fame, the “Taste of KC” and the carousel (for my son). I like what they did…still, I’d have rather had a new stadium downtown. But that’s just me.

Lets build a downtown stadium
This one is screwed. What used to be the most beautiful ballpark in the majors has been turned into a gimmicky amusement park. Some of the upgrades were probably needed but the whoring of the outfield is inexcusable. All that comes to mind is Caddy Shack 2, cheap thrills designed to appeal to casual numb nuts in order to get them to the ball park. Does it enhance the fan experience? Sure, in the same way that a cheap-o toy in your cereal enhances your breakfast experience. The beauty of the K has been lost. The fountains, while they still remain, look ridiculously out of place. Centerfield looks as though someone ripped apart a green dumpster in order to put up fence. Where did the grass go? Was it taking up valuable space that could be used for a walkway for yahoo’s that can’t still during the game.
The K used to remind me of the ball field in Iowa that was used in the movie Field of Dreams. Now, it is just a run of the mill stadium where only a biased hometown fan could find beauty. On a scale of 1 to 10 the new K drops from 10 to 5, spectacular to normal. Go to Hell KC.

Can't please everyone I guess.
I’ve always wondered why there were no seats in the outfield, and now that they are there, I have to say that the view from those seats is great. The outfield experience is a little gimmicky, but honestly, if the Royals don’t pander to people that don’t necessarily like to concentrate on the game for 9 full innings, you’re left with a handful of diehards. This stadium allows them to draw in a wider range of dumbasses. There were still a lot of people milling around out there tonight in the later innings as it got cold. But yes, sadly, I see a good chunk of this stuff not being used as early as Monday when it will be cold, rainy, and we’ll be facing the Indians.
Overall, I think the outside looks great, even if it doesn’t quite mesh with the old concrete. And I think the new stuff looks great. It feels like a new stadium to me, and it didn’t mess with any of the sight lines.
Oh, and Mr. Weatherstone, if you want to see grass at the K look at the field, it is covered in it.

Was there corn surrounding the stadium before?
I’ve never seen invisible corn, except for that one time I worked for Pioneer seeds, but that was purely an experimental means of feeding our invisible cows. Unfortunately, I forgot to feed them or pollinate the corn, because of course, they were invisible and I lost them.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood thinks you should relax. (Sorry for that, I also long irrationally for something long gone: the 80’s.) Every stadium in baseball has crap for casual fans and children. The Yankees built a full size replica of their hallowed stadium, just to put more crap like this inside of it. The Cardinals left a gigantic pit next to theirs and tried to inspire investors to build a quaint “Village” there. The Mets got rid of Shea, so somebody got something right. Almost everyone makes mistakes in building a new ballpark. What did we do? We maximized the earning potential of of stadium, so we can “better compete financially” with other ball clubs. I’m am so distressed, that I may actually go to a game sit in the outfield and cry until the memory of our grass hills washes away the other fans onto the field.
I miss the sweet country ballpark we used to have with good wholesome American values like “Home runs are not souvenirs.” and “KC only serves below quality Gates barbecue”. And especially, the hot tub. Let’s bring back the hot tub!
The complaints about the lines and crowded ballpark may be well founded. Previously, the bathrooms were awful, the food wasn’t great, and everything wasn’t new. Relax, the crowds will be less after the novelty wears off.

I imagine that waiting 15 minutes in line on Opening Day this year
was more like waiting 30-45 last year. But people expected ZERO wait. The bathrooms for the guys were a huge mistake though. BRING BACK THE TROUGHS!

separate urinals instead of troughs simply due to the instance of a young kid missing and pissing all over my leg once. That was pleasant.

Mostly I like it.
I think it is a much more intimate stadium. I saw a pic the other day of the park Opening Day 1973. It was stark and the field was HUGE. I forgot how much foul territory there was.
My main concerns are:
1) the Royals HoF looks like a building lifted out of Leningrad in the 1950’s
2) the needless ‘walkway’ in CF really clutters the works. I like seeing SOME grass in the outfield. Now the area behind the OF wall looks like every other ballpark. I don’t have any serious problems with the fountain seating but the area beneath the scoreboard just looks tacky.
3) The press box in the upper deck looks a little out of place. I would like to see them mesh it more seamlessly with the original architechture.
Things I like:
1) The Rivals Sports Bar looks great
2) The Diamond Club is classy
This all based upon my perspective watching games on TV here in New York. Can’t wait to catch a game in KC this summer.
I've got crazy flipper fingers!

80 percent positive 10 percent meh 10 percent negative
I agree with the poster that said “mostly I like it” The positives are the wider concourses improved bathrooms and especially the upper deck concourses. The upper deck used to feel like you were hanging on some sort of an outdoor balcony and offered no shelter during a rain delay. The outfield seats are a big plus, along with the various bars and activities out there. The meh is that they reduced capacity, but the Royals don’t sell out anyway so that is a problem that does not exist ( yet ). The negative is the dead space behind the club seat area on the first level, and seemingly fewer choices for food, I thought there were supposed to be more. If there are only going to be 8 or 10 main concession stands in the upper deck at least expand the menu at each one of them.

Thought it was pretty awesome
the outside looks so much nicer and the outfield stuff is pretty cool.
Besides that, it still felt like the old K to me so I think it was only improvements really.

I had a blast
the biggest changes happened last year (the vomitoriums and crown vision), so it wasn’t radically different from last year for me, except that i was in SRO on the right field wall. i do not wish to watch every game from out there, but i’ll definitely watch some. the mist blowing off the fountains is going to be every bit as awesome as you’ve thought it would in july and august.
longest i had to wait for anything was a beer, and there was an HD screen in the outfield beerline, so whatever.
i liked Rivals, didn’t see the HOF, and like the new crown on the screen.

i was present as well
i will first agree with weatherstone that this really needed to be done downtown and it will be a long time before i can let that go.
BUT, the stadium was definitely better. i did not eat any food, but i never had to wait in a very long line at all. the mens restroom lines were actually long, but i was the jerk that went in through the out door with no wait at all.
the wider concourses were very necessary.
i walked around the entire stadium. the outfield seats are pretty good seats, especially for the price. the HOF was not open yet. the scenery overall seems gaudy and overdone.
the stadium improved where it needed to, and one can ignore things they do not like.

Then, you have a few knuckleheads who think they are more important than the guys in line. Those people don’t do favors in crowds.

I went to opening day.....
After looking at the 3D models and all of the pictures that have been posted from the time construction started until now, I thought that for sure the biggest difference in the park would be the exterior and all of the metalwork. When I walked in the stadium friday I found out that I couldn’t have been any more wrong. The outfield seating, the HOF and Rivals completely frame in the park, making it more intimate, enclosed and generally much less like a minor league park. Also the seating around the crownvision scoreboard puts into perspective the absolute massiveness of it ( all the people look like ants walking around underneath it )
All in all i’m not extremely impressed with the exterior but as i said the interior is in my opinion near perfect

i went to the opener
and I love the changes. I make it to somewhere between 15-30 games every year, and I’m glad they renovated instead of building a downtown stadium. I was pretty excited to see the changes, so it was like giving sugar to a 3 year old. But I thought the outfield area was nice. The bar looked cool. I’m sure my kid will like the carousel. i’m bound to have a drunken minigolf competition with somebody. I didn’t like that they closed off the area behind home plate for the diamond club or whatever – I liked to walk around behind home plate and still see the game, but now i’ll just walk around the outfield. No biggee. It seemed like the waits were all shorter than previous openers (they seemed about the same as a SEA vs KC on a Saturday night with no giveaways from year’s past). So I would guess that the waits will be significantly less during normal games, but probably a little worse during game 6 of the ALCS!

I went to the Saturday game
I thought everything was great, the bathroom and concession lines weren’t as bad as what I had heard, but it wasn’t Opening Day, so I don’t see it being a huge problem the remainder of the year. The little walkway in front of the scoreboard looks ridiculous as well. Prices were about the same, I bought a powder blue Hulk Hand coozy, its awesome, but be prepared. $28 for ONE. No major complaints, everything was amazing for the most part. I’ll get some pics up after we go back on Wednesday, my camera died when we were tailgaiting.

There was 1 policy that I STRONGLY disagreed with
On the lower level, the Royals ushers were instructed to stop patrons with “200” section tickets from entering the vomitorium and using facilities underneath the 1st level. Only “100” section tickets were supposed to use those.
FYI – there are no differences in the amenities in the underneath facilities and the top-of-the-first-level amenities.
BIG PROBLEM – from what I saw while working, this caused long lines at the top concession stands, while at the same time workers in the “underneath” concession stands were twiddling their thumbs at times. The reason – many of the patron with section “100” tickets still go to the very top – probably because they don’t realize the underneath facilities are exclusively for them.
I’d look for this to change, once enough patrons bitch about it to the Royals. I talked to one of the ushers checking the tickets in the vomitorium; he said the Royals brought in some people from San Diego who were responsible for devising this policy. He thought it was very stupid as well, and was not really doing his best to enforce it. Just goes to show you what happens when management thinks they know it all, and doesn’t solicit advise from the soldiers on the front lines. I guess the idea was to further create a “tiered” experience by giving the box seat holders a slightly better service than the cretons in mere reserved seat status. My personal opinion is that there is not all that much difference in costs among all of our downstairs tickets to justify this attempt. This ain’t San Diego, in other words.

He said mainly just to make them stand out. His reasoning was, if they all had Royals colors on, no one would be able to spot them. I guess the bold print on their backs that say USHER just aren’t enough anymore

Been to all
the games so far this year and am impressed with the improvements. They added a lot of green space outside, which will be a big improvement when it grows. Watched part of the game Saturday from inside the bar and it was great. Totally different experience. We were able to get a seat just be scouting for about an inning. Watched the end of Sundays game from the outfield and got to stand above Soria as he warmed up.
I think the bathrooms will be an issue and that we will see the triumphant return of the trough. No more local food vendors was sad. No Gates, Torre’s, Planet Sub, ect. Also, no more 24 oz cans of beer that i could find. Those are my gripes. Oh yeah…and wtf is a Loge?

My First game was tonight
(spelling events will happen, I had some beers)
FIrst impression upon pulling up to the stadium was “WOW”
It looks almost compleetely different from the outside w/ the glass fascade and a kind of pewtery looking steel thingy on the 3rd base side of Kauffman (maybe the 1st too, I didn’t go over there) that has Royals punched onto it – it looks very cool, much coller than my drunken typing can portray…
We had Crown seats, so we didnd’t walk all the way around the stadium, but it looks AMAZING. The ribbon boards, and the HD boards on the HOF & Rivals & the R&LF walls really make everything surround you (literally & figuratively).
Oh fuck it, I’m going to bed, I’ll post more tomorrow after coffee

They were free for me
So FUCK YEA!!!!! But, even if you were to pay the $190 face value for Crown Seats, you absolutely get your $$’s worth…
We started on the buffet of Prime Rib, A kick ass Beef Stew, a Shrimp Pasta, Salad Bar, etc and stayed inside & had a couple beers before the game, moving outside for the National Anthem & game.
Once seated, we had ‘snacks’ consisting of Hot Dogs, Nachos (topped w/ everything, not just shitty canned cheese by product), Edy’s Dibs (the BEST Ice-Cream product on the market), Peanuts and, oh yea BEER. Lots & lots of beer.
The view was insane, and a pretty hilarious exchange occured mid-game…not sure if it will translate, or if it was a ‘had to be there’ moment, but here goes…
There was this douchebag heckler in the 1st row of crown, just to the 3rd Base side of Home plate. He didn’t have a booming voice, not sure if you could hear him on the TV broadcast or not, but he was saying, just dumb things, but keeping it TOTALLY clean and non-personal. Basically, he was being a very well-behaved heckler. The funniest thing, by far he was doing was lifting his shirt up and pressing his flabby, pasty white man chesticles against the net as Pavano would go into his wind-up. He did this for about 6 consecutive pitches fairly early in the game…
Well, about inning 3 or so, my friend, who is also a loud mouth started asking the heckler’s friends why they came to the game with their special needs friend, and other slightly comedic references like that. Again, it was all in good fun.
So anyway, in I think the 7th inning, I go inside to use the facilities, and when I come back outside, I hear my friend YELLING at the heckler. Apparently the heckler had gotten quiet over the last half inning or so and my friend was on his ASS, saying things like, “You paid $190 for these seats and you can’t even heckle the whole game? Get your money’s worth man! Come on, you are disappointing me, HECKLE SOMEBODY.” In short, he was heckling the heckler.
Victor Martinez was on deck as this was happening, and he turned around to see what was going on & he had a HUGE smile on his face. He was basically laughing his ass off at my friend for heckling the heckler that had been ribbing the Tribe all night.
So, the Heckler, in perfect comedic timing genius waits for the surrounding crowd (the entire Crown Section was laughing, and pretty much the 1st 10 or so rows behind Crown were catcalling the heckler at this point) to quiet before saying (In a kind of skeemish, “I just got called out, I better say something” voice, again perfect for the comedy of it), “Hey…Martinez.”…………….“Wanna See my Nipples?” I thought Martinez was going to fall over. HE said it mid warm-up swing and Martinez really didn’t even finish the swing, he kind of doubled over, making sure we couldn’t see his face erupting in laughter. He was SOOOO lucky that whoever was in front of him recorded the 3rd out. Even with Major League caliber concentration, he would have had a hard time blocking that out…
BOOM! ROASTED!

Damn it, I forgot
The reason Martinez turned around in the first place was because my friend, in calling out the Heckler was saying, “You are hurting Martinez’s feelings by not heckling him.” which was when Martinez first turned to show that he was being entertained by the conversation occuring behind him.
BOOM! ROASTED!

Watching on MLB.com from NY.
It looks great on TV and the Yankee radio announcers thought it was very good.
I wish they would have gone forward with the Kaufman/Arrowhead Rolling cover though. But hey, I don’t live in KC so I didn’t get to vote and don’t have to pay the taxes. I thought the cover (if done right) would have made a great landmark for the City’s pro sports complex.
New Yorkers think Yankee Stadium is great, although they haven’t even had a home game yet as of this post.
They are complaing about the Mets place though because from many seats, you can’t see the entire field. That is pretty bad if it’s true. I haven’t been yet.

Went to opening day and Monday's game...
I brought my 10 year old son and nephew to opening day. We sat in section 143. I went with a group of 7 kids and 7 adults on Monday night. We “sat” in the right field underneath Rivals.
My thoughts: The exterior is pretty bad, not that it matters. I can count on one hand the number of US stadia that are attractive from the outside and the new K is not on the list.
As far as I’m concerned, the new K experience is entirely about the outfield. I’ve always believed that the OF offers the best viewing experience and the K went from being the worst stadium in baseball for outfield seating to perhaps the best. The standing room rail in right center is genius—a great view and a cool experience. We watched Greinke warm up on Monday from above the bullpen in right and when he was done, he tossed the ball up to my nephew, who’s probably still smiling about it. I’ll post pictures in a couple of days.
If you’re looking for a social night out for a decent price, here’s the drill: Buy the cheapest tickets in the house for you and seven or so friends and get to the game an hour early. Go to Rivals and grab two tables in front facing the field. There’s a $100 minimum for the table for the night, so you can use the table as a home base and wander around the stadium or you can sit tight and watch the game. You’ll get out of there for $25/head or so and have a blast. We did that Monday and loved it. It was especially nice because it allowed us to get out of the cold.
It’s a much better place to watch baseball. I’ve been to 25 of the active stadiums and the K is certainly in my top 5. Its location will always keep it from doing any better than that.
