Game Seven Overflow Thread

Royals lead 3-0, and currently have an 82% chance of winning. Unfortunately, Zack is at 69 pitches after just three innings, so we could be in for an eventful night.

Why do about 4 Indians have extremely similar batting stances?

This holds true for Blue Jays hitters, as well. And I made note of another team’s players looking similar awhile ago (can’t remember the team)

Actually, I had an uncomfortable afternoon as well. I got out of a 4-hour class after only about 45 minutes, which would normally be an awesome cause for celebration. I need blogger advice

I’m working on a piece for Driveline on expected platoon splits. Since I I’m pretty sure two of the three people who read my columns regularly are on this board, I thought I might ask if there are one or two other guys you want “predicted” for the upcoming season. It’s just a fun little project. I’ve already got two Royals onthe list. No switch hitters, as they aren’t as interesting (since their spltis are pretty obviuos after 600 MLB PAs):

Here’s who I have so far:

A. Gordon
J. Mauer
Ichiro!
Ryan Ludwick
Ian Kinsler
Matt Holliday
Akinori Iwamura
Miguel Olivo
Ian Stewart
Evan Longoria

I’m generally looking for guys who have either particularly large or “reverse” splits, or something else that makes them “interesting.” I’m not sure I should have more than two Royals… I have enough guys now, but I hvae some time before I post this (Wednesday, probably), any suggestions?

Olivo's at-bats are the strongest argument for Buck to be the starter.

And is there any doubt that Callaspo is better than Guillen?

Even when Guillen comes back, I sure hope that Callaspo continues to get a hella lot of PT. He’s been very, very good, so far.

talent has never been Guillen's problem

it’s been his clubhouse behavior that’s been the issue. the guy is a good player. he hits with power and has a very good arm in right. his is streaky though. Callaspo, while a nice OBP guy, does not contribute as much to the lineup as Guillen does.

Blown Save

by BlownSave on Apr 13, 2009 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

except that the positional difference is very important

well, age, too, since Guillen has had one good offensive season in the last three seasons, and hasn’t played a full season of good defense since 2005.

And his power has been dropping every year… while he’s be in all pitchers parks, he’s moved to less and less extreme ones, so his power is clearly declining, and it’s not all that impressive anymore.

Also, .300 OBP = not so good

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 13, 2009 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

the arguement was not if Guillen was a great player

it was whether or not he was better than Callaspo, which Guillen is.

Blown Save

by BlownSave on Apr 13, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

Neither is a great defender. Guillen’s a better hitter, probably, but probably not enough to make up the difference between 2B and corner outfield.

by buddyball on Apr 13, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Besides his month-long hot streak last June

(which was admittedly awesome), he hasn’t really displayed all that much “power” in Kansas City.

Sure, he has the potential. So does Jacobs. And I suppose, if you’re as devoid of power as we are, it’s OK to have one of those all-or-nothing guys in the lineup. Two, though, isn’t any fun. And three, with Olivo in there, is really no fun.

by rockchalk on Apr 13, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

33 year-old players aren't usually describe as "having potential"

If Guillen is a league average player this season, we should be thanking Xenu for his miraculous blessing.

Same for Jacobs.

Bringing you more-or-less replacement level analysis and commentary to Driveline Mechanics and elsewhere since sometime in 2008.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 13, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree.

Our lineup is better with Callaspo + Teahen than Teahen + Guillen.

by rockchalk on Apr 13, 2009 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

It scores more runs.

We can’t afford to have three out-suckers in our “usual” lineup with Guillen, Jacobs and Olivo.

It pretty much kills any rally.

by rockchalk on Apr 13, 2009 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, wOBA is a very telling statistic

And I’d wager that Callaspo’s was significantly higher than Guillen’s last year (albeit in limited time), and was projected as a whole to be better than Guillen’s this year. Power is great and all, but a .280/.350/.350 line still trumps .260/.310/.450. Not making outs is more important than that raw isolated power. Just IMO.

by Royals Nation on Apr 13, 2009 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed entirely.

That’s what I meant to say… :D

by rockchalk on Apr 13, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually

If you read my WAR post, Guillen’s still projected to be a better hitter. the positional adjustment is the biggest difference.

Callaspo’s more valuable.

by Matt Klaassen on Apr 13, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Callaspo may be more valuable...

but the arguement was who was the better player – not the most valuable. But I’m not so sure Guillen isn’t equally as valuable to this team.

I don't know.

But he hasn’t been that bad, at all.

I would rather have Pena start any day of the year than Bloomquist.

I don't hate TPJ at all

And I can stand to see him get a start, but NO more frequently than 1/10 games. He he gets 15-18 starts at SS this year, and appears in 60 or so games either as a PH or Defensive replacement late, I’m OK w/ that

(but it’s still a waste of a roster space)

I think my biggest complaint

MLB ball has become a league of lobbyists. It’s easier to lobby Washington and the local politicians rather than build your fanbase. We’ll see how the current depression affects revenues. If the league gets desperate, maybe they’ll let him buy in.

It's the nature of the beast.

Like it or not, the easiest way to get noticed amidst the thousands of same-aged youngsters is to smoke the cover off of the ball. Most scouts don’t really give a damn about walking or pitch selection, so you’re pretty much trained from a young age to try and hit the ball whenever you can. The more you hit, the more likely you get noticed, get a contract and get your way out of the DR.

They should probably be able to switch t heir mindset, though, once they get to America. Probably just such a habit, and they think it’s what got them a contract (right or wrong), some may not want to switch.

That’s mostly conjecture, but it makes a lot of sense to me, at least…
